I was approached in the park today by a pretty vulnerable looking teenage girl. She said she had been sunbathing and fallen asleep and when she woke up, her purse had gone. She desperately needed £2 for her fare home. Anyway, even though I was abit suspect, I gave her the money. Ten minutes later ds and I went into the childrens park and there she was again, reciting the same story to a group of mothers. Who needs the slap.. me or her?! I said in a very loud voice 'I've just given you your fare home to *** so don't take the piss, clear off' Was that abit harsh???

oxocube · 06/08/2002 18:41

jessi, double slap !! (though not to you!)

oxocube · 06/08/2002 18:46

sorry, Jessi, forgot to add that I have been taken in by this one more times than is sensible Problem is, always lurking in the back of my mind is that these morons might be telling the truth and could end up dumped in a field by some horrible pervert the next day. Shame we are mugs but at least we have a conscience

jodee · 06/08/2002 21:18

I've been 'had' by a man coming up to me whilst I was doing a lone shop (in the winter so it was dark early), packing the bags into the boot of the car, saying he'd run out of petrol very near to the supermarket petrol station, could he have a couple of quid to fill up his can?

I subsequently heard of others to whom the same had happened.

I did feel very vulnerable and of course didn't like to say no.

I felt a fool afterwards, but if a similar situation happened again, I think I would still hand over the money - next time it might be someone genuine, and I would like to think that if I was in that sort of situation, someone would help me out too.

bells2 · 07/08/2002 08:16

My all trusting husband has been "had" many times but my personal favourite concerns a local window cleaner. The chap knocked on our door and said he would clean the outside of our windows the next day while we were at work and hubby happily handed over £25 in advance. That bit I can almost understand.

The man then returned 10 minutes later saying he needed £10 in change for another neighbour and that he would bring bak a note in a few minutes. Hubby again happily did so and surprise surprise our windows never did get cleaned and nor did we see our £35 again!

Bozza · 07/08/2002 08:59

£25 seems a bit steep to have windows cleaned. Ours only cost £5 for a 4-bed detached (previously £2.50 for a 2-bed townhouse). Do you live in a mansion Bells or is it a north/south divide thing?

bells2 · 07/08/2002 09:16

Cripes - we do actually have a lot of windows but it currently costs us £70!. That is inside and out and it is central london. We used to have a tiny cottage in Camridgeshire with a conservatory and that was only a tenner. Tragically the window cleaner there was the father of one of the missing girls.

bossykate · 07/08/2002 09:51

it's a north south thing! we pay £30 inside and out for a three bed terrace.

sis · 07/08/2002 10:48

We pay £8 for the ouside only of a semi in north west london AND he brings his own clean water...

LiamsMum · 07/08/2002 10:55

I'd like to give my dh a little slap at the moment (for reasons I won't mention... just typical male behaviour), but mainly I would like to slap my friend's husband. She has just found out that he has been trying to get her best friend into bed for the past five years, and not only that, he has also 'propositioned' a number of her other friends. He also admitted to a friend that he had a 3 month affair with one of his wife's acquaintances last year sometime. What a great guy!!! And she works full-time to support the family, while he gets part-time work on occasion. She now has to face the wonderful decision about whether to end her 16 year marriage or try to put it behind her, but personally I know what I would be doing.

Tillysmummy · 07/08/2002 10:58

Hertsmere Council especially the refuse collection. We have one wheely bin which they are now saying they refuse to collect if the lid is not completely closed because it breaks their hydraulic machine or potentially their staff may sue them for back injury. Our bin is a real problem. With all the nappies and rubbish a baby creates one is not enough. DH wrote to our MP and to the council and got v nice but unhelpful replies from both. They want to charge us £100 for another bin ! I think it's outrageous that they only give one bin to a young family and same to a single person ! When we pay £120 council tax a month I wonder what it's for.

bells2 · 07/08/2002 11:01

Does your council offer a recyling service or perhaps there is a paper/bottle bin nearby you could use?

Tillysmummy · 07/08/2002 11:10

Hi bells2 we do recycle bottles and have been given a paper bin but still manage to generate so much rubbish. I just find their attitude very unhelpful. Especially when they drop half the rubbish on the road and never clear it up. When I was a child the Dustmen were very conscientious and helpful and well deserved their Christmas box, it's not like that anymore and we pay more than ever for a poorer service.

Bozza · 07/08/2002 11:16

The £5 is only for outside. Didn't even know you oculd get window cleaners to do the inside.

On the rubbish front we have two wheelie bins. One for recycled (but not bottles) and one for ordinary. The ordinary one was 2/3 full due to not being collected for the recent strike. The recycled one is only collected once a month and is always bursting by the middle of the second week. I am considering canvassing the council to collect recycled more often.

bossykate · 07/08/2002 11:36

aha, sis! it is a north/south divide we are in s. london!

Tetley · 07/08/2002 11:50

Bozza - we have the same problem with the recycling bin too! We don't seem to generate too much 'normal' rubbish, which is the one that gets collected every week. But the green bin is always full by the end of the second week, yet only gets collected once a month. So for half of every month - the paper, plastic etc has to just go in the normal bin - which seems to defeat the object of it all.
Glass is entirely seperate - we have to take that to the local bottle bank (a job I hate when I'm pregnant! I always feel that people are giving me very strange looks

Tillysmummy · 07/08/2002 11:55

I have to pay £12 for outside of my windows im in North London

WideWebWitch · 07/08/2002 21:44

Blimey, this thread should be renamed "how much do you pay to have your windows cleaned"

ScummyMummy · 07/08/2002 22:23

My windows are left dirty for free.

jodee · 07/08/2002 22:40

Scummymummy, we must use the same window cleaner

Alli · 08/08/2002 16:18

Tillysmummy, I've just moved into the Hertsmere Council area and they definitely cleared my bin this morning and the lid wasn't shut. It must depend on how jobsworth the crew is feeling!

Bozza · 08/08/2002 16:25

I want to slap my binmen when I get home and find six wheelie bins positioned across the end of the drive. And I've seen them do it so I know its not kids.

Hi · 08/08/2002 16:38

Bozza it happened to me twice, re bins in front of drive, I phoned up the second time said I didn't want to give my address but this isn't right especially when the children are screaming for the loo and you can't get in without moving them etc etc. It hasn't happened since.

PamT · 08/08/2002 20:35

Our bin men leave the bins all over the pavement blocking footpaths, drives, gates etc, why can't they put them back where they got them from? They are usually quite good but won't take anything that isn't actually in the bin (will take bins with extra bags stood on top). I noticed that they hadn't taken the large cardboard box that my neighbour left at the side of her bin today.

I never manage to fill my black bin in a week and there are 5 of us including one nappy wearer. I do fill the green bin after 2 or 3 weeks though and this is only emptied once a month. I am very fortunate that my neighbour lives abroad for most of the year so I tend to borrow her bins at christmas or if I have extra green waste.

Lucy123 · 08/08/2002 21:08

we have a similar problem - the bin men usually leave the bin in a sensible place but simply leave the lid where it lands so it gets driven over. It is exacerbated by the fact that if I am a bit late bringing my bin back in, some tourist will helpfully use it to dispose of all their rubbish!

Have to take our own recycling though and I'd like to give a big cyber hug to the local council for finally introducing can recycling banks - I'd been saving ours for two years with nowhere to put them and was running out of space.
