Oops I meant Victoria Hearvy/Harvey (now I'm not sure how you spell it) but she irritates me sooo much...

Queenie · 12/06/2002 13:50

No, not Eamon Holmes. I think he is great but Lorraine Kelly - says the same thing to everyone -and had the cheek to have an exercise video out - I wouldn't kill myself exercising to look like her, I'd want to look better than when I started not worse!

bundle · 12/06/2002 13:52

Queenie, you like Eammon????

PamT · 12/06/2002 15:46

I like Fiona Phillips, she gives the celebs some stick, especially the politicians. Some of the things she comes out with are a right slap in the face for them.

Pamina - you don't happen to live in SW14 do you? Just that a load of roads near us are getting permit parking.. but we're not even though we live closer to the flipping station! Aargh. So I'm going to give Richmond Council a good slap too.
Sobernow - I had the same view of AA Gill till I read his book. Essentially tales of his travels -he set out wanting to "interview" countries - he had me both crying with laughter and sorrow. The articles that dealt with africa - in particular the way that the 1st world Drug companies hold the 3rd world's health to ransom - were superb. His grasp of politics, history and the English language go far beyond his outpourings in the Times. That's not to say that there weren't typical Gill pieces (judging a beauty contest; directing a porn film) - but it was worth the read.

bettys · 12/06/2002 21:46

Willow2 - I live in the area. It's not so much the commuters I'd give a slapping to as those who drive huge great 4 wheel drives & fat-arsed jeeps. Why why why? They're not going to go off-road, they usually only have 2 children and it clogs up the narrow roads and pavements as people park on the kerb here. Richmond council should ban them.

Ooops. Must put that bottle of Pinot Grigio back in the fridge now.

bettys · 12/06/2002 21:50

And to any Mumsnetters out there who have said cars I know you're all really nice people, it's just the cars I don't like.

Note to self: don't go online after too much wine

SoupDragon · 12/06/2002 22:01

Michael Winner for his "Winners Dinners" column in the Times. What a t**t.

jasper · 13/06/2002 00:11

Bundle, that is terrible news about the chinese Po lady.
Now I will have to start liking her.

leander · 13/06/2002 00:17

I need to slap myself because im addicted to mumsnet and am sitting here instead of going to bed!!

SueDonim · 13/06/2002 07:46

Thank you for the welcome back, everyone - I'm in Indonesia, Tillysmummy. You're spot-on about the up & running, Tigermoth - unfortunately, it's been mostly to the loo for the past 36hrs!! And DD has rampant impetigo everywhere except her legs - but at least we can afford the antibiotics to cure it.

But don't get me wrong, everyone, about ranting. We still need to complain about bad things everywhere, because if no one complained nothing would ever improve.

There certainly are lots of things to write about, Sobernow, but because we are living at one remove from the local people I'm not sure my observations would be fair comment, really. I'm living in a nice, green complex with two swimming pools/restaurant/bar/shop and with daily help - very different to most other people - so in some ways it's easy to be critical. What is interesting is reading the daily paper, where their concerns are no different to ours despite the huge gulf in living standards; education, environmental matters, corruption, Third World Debt, food, unemployment, health, etc. We're all sisters (and brothers) under the skin.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2002 08:06

Are you sure about the chinese CBeebies lady? Her name is apparently "Poi" which would be a bit of a coincidence if she used to be Po...

I agree that she's incredibly irritating though

Yes, don't know why gas guzzlers are so much a status symbol when we all know about pollution, etc. I suppose its because so many people are sheep.

Azzie · 13/06/2002 09:57

Pamina, bettys - did you see in the paper at the weekend about the lady in the US who is running a one-woman campaign against 4x4 gas guzzlers? She goes round leaving a rude leaflet under their windscreen wipers with a phone number on it, and when the owners ring up to complain, they get an even ruder recorded message. Another thing she does is never give up her parking space to someone in one of these vehicles - she just sits in her car until they get fed up.

CAM · 13/06/2002 10:32

love it - of course the owners would ring up the number wouldn't they. If an unknown number was left on my (normal) car for any reason I would throw it away.

SofiaAmes · 13/06/2002 16:45

Oh, don't get me started on gas guzzlers. I own 2 of them in the usa (they are both in storage). Here in england I have a very small, petrol efficient car. I feel no guilt for my american gas guzzlers. I actually have perfectly legitimate reasons for owning a large 4x4 in the usa and since those reasons don't exist her in the uk, i don't have one here. I would like to slap people who blindly impose their personal preferences and priorities on others!

Eulalia · 13/06/2002 21:20

I am in 2 minds about AA Gill - he is rather smug but I do find him funny although I've stopped reading the Sunday Times now. And yes I'd forgotten about Michael Winner - definately a good slapping!

And why do 90% of children's TV presenters have to talk like they are speaking through chewing gum?

bettys · 13/06/2002 21:40

Azzie - hadn't heard of that woman campaigner in the US. Wish I had the b*lls to do that. But as some of my friends have 4x4's it could get embarassing!

spork · 14/06/2002 00:14

SofiaAmes--
Very curious to hear your perfectly legitimate reasons for owning 2 gas guzzlers in the states.
thks

Paid attention to the credits on Teletubbies this morning and Poi Fan Lee is listed, so it's true!

SoupDragon · 14/06/2002 08:43

Yes, I did some Teletubby research after posting here. On the BBC/Cbeebies website, she lists Po as her favourite children's TV character.

And I also found out that Po is, apparently, 6'6" tall. Unlike Pui.
