Has your pet got a 'human' name?

Just wondering really ...
I, personally, can't stand it when people call their pets names like Mary or Amelia ...
The other day we were at the park and a woman was calling "Samantha, SAMANTHAAAAAA!" in a rather panicky sort of way. So I was about to go and offer my services to help her look for her toddler when a bloody great Rotweiler came bounding out of the bushes ...
On another thread a lady wants to call her baby girl a name she already gave her dog so now she can't ....
We have always had non human names for pets - our cat is called Woody ... after Woody from Toy Story ... my parents had a great dane called Pluto and a ginger cat called Robinson's Golden Shred (Goldie to his friends).
So ... a reverse thread - instead of bizarre names for children (like Spike or Elmo, which are pets' names IMO) thread ....
What is your pet called and why?

lol somehow the idea of calling a Rottweiler Samantha seems hilarious
sorry if that offends dog-lovers

Tend to agree with you. I find pets names for humans ridiculous. Remember a headline splashed all over the daily mail: Tiggy [shudder]are we supposed to think its cute that a grown woman is still known by a kitten's name that she apparently acquired in the nursery?

cocopopshater · 15/09/2006 05:45

should add, I think Samantha itself is a beautiful name, in case of offending the many Samanthas out there.

My pets, over the years, have been called Tammi (cat), Trudy, Alfie, Sophie (dogs), Cassie and Kerry (cats). The last two still with me. So a mixture names, some "human" some not. But, like "Sam" for a dog, some names cross over more easily than others don't they?

Incidently, Cassie is short for Castrol GTX because when he meows he sounds like he needs oiling; and Kerry is named after the county in Ireland where we had our honeymoon

Blandmum · 15/09/2006 07:07

NO, but then we have fish, and they are a bit harder to 'humanise'

Pre kids wer used to have a can called Ozzy.

My cat, when I was a kid, was called Tibby

LadyTophamHatt · 15/09/2006 07:14

Our dog is called Jessie which I think is a reasonable human name for an animal....

2 guiena pigs are called teabag and custard so really reaaly not human names.

geekgrrl · 15/09/2006 07:17

we had three cats, all with human names (Katy, Liam and Lucy) and acquired pre-children. We had indeed shot ourselves in the foot somewhat - would have really like to have called dd2 Katie but obviously couldn't give her the same name as the cat. Still think they sound good as cat names on their own.

Our dog's called Flash. don't think I'd inflict that on a child!

sassy · 15/09/2006 07:24

Our cat is called Basil.

A human name but not one we'd use.

I love the idea of a massive Rottweiler called Samantha - I think this is funny.

Spagblog · 15/09/2006 07:24

I went to stay with a German family who had called their cat the same name as my first name.

I never knew whether they were calling me down for breakfast or the cat!

Charlie seems to be a good labrador name, but also very human.
Same with Toby.

sassy · 15/09/2006 07:25

Oh and dd2 is called Cassie, Miaou - short for a more conventional 'person'name than Castrol GX though!

Our cat is called Oscar, but for some strange reason we spend our lives calling him kitten which he isnt any more!!

HAPPYFACE · 15/09/2006 07:34

Pets are part of the family and dogs can act like "your child" so I've never had a problem with them having human names.
As a child we had a George and then keifer both were boxer dogs.
As an adult I have a dog called Harry and 2 ginger cats Basil and Frank!

KTeepee · 15/09/2006 07:41

Ooh I had a dog called Pluto when I was little...

Our dogs have often had "human" names, but ones that were not in common use at the time (for humans!). Can't remember ever having a cat with a human name.

throckenholt · 15/09/2006 07:45

we have a had (as a child) a cat called Sammy, a dog called Sue, rabbits called Smokey, Pip and Squeak.

Currently we have a collie dog called Molly.

I love human names on pets - it cracks me up! I know someone with a dog called John! MIL's dogs have human names - Connie and Alfie. Connie beceause she is from Cornwall (eh?) and Alfie because it 'just suited him'. They were going to get another puppy which fell through and he was going to be Douglas!

schneebly · 15/09/2006 07:52

When I was little we had a dog called 'Captain' because he used to think he was the boos!

schneebly · 15/09/2006 07:53

oops - boss not boos! He was a little scruffy mongrel too not some grand great dane or something

BarefootJasnem · 15/09/2006 07:53

My neighbours son is called Woody...

The hamster is called Dave, but the kids named him, not me.

My cat was Custard.

we had a spaniel called McKenzie when I was little. Our dog is a black mongrel called Duncan.
My MIL has 2 dogs: Thomas and Rico
I love when dogs have human names. A friend of mine has one named Bob.
I always said I was going to have 3 dogs (obviously before I had ONE) and I was going to call them: Stewart, Boyd and Higgins.

My animals have human names. My ponies are Rosie,Heidi,Cally (short for Calypso) and Lola (better than her registered name Lusty!!) The cat is called Yasmin (named by a previous male owner after Mrs le Bon!). A previous cat was called Albert because his original name was Einstein and there was no way I was using that.

nailpolish · 15/09/2006 08:16

LOL

i used to have a rabbit called Dave

hulababy · 15/09/2006 08:16

I don't have a pet anymore, but when little I got a kitten at home - I called her Lucy. Not sure why; just liked the name at the time.

Recently had a cat her (DD was allergic sadly so it had to go back) and she had already been named Sassy.
