Has your pet got a 'human' name?

Just wondering really ...
I, personally, can't stand it when people call their pets names like Mary or Amelia ...
The other day we were at the park and a woman was calling "Samantha, SAMANTHAAAAAA!" in a rather panicky sort of way. So I was about to go and offer my services to help her look for her toddler when a bloody great Rotweiler came bounding out of the bushes ...
On another thread a lady wants to call her baby girl a name she already gave her dog so now she can't ....
We have always had non human names for pets - our cat is called Woody ... after Woody from Toy Story ... my parents had a great dane called Pluto and a ginger cat called Robinson's Golden Shred (Goldie to his friends).
So ... a reverse thread - instead of bizarre names for children (like Spike or Elmo, which are pets' names IMO) thread ....
What is your pet called and why?

Dogs called Barney (it just fitted him as puppy) and Milhouse (keeping up the Simpsons theme! and he is a mainly white jack russle who looks a bit 'geeky')

Cats are Zoe (my favourite doll as a child was called Zoe) and Buffy (as in Vampire Slayer, ironic name as this particular cat gets scared by carpets let alone demonic entities!!!)

Oh, and DH reckons he has named the goldfish in the pond after the members of ACDC!!!

We used to think fondly of the squirrel that lives in the oak tree in our garden.

Cute names, a few nuts scatterd about thoughfully for him etc.

Then he gnawed his way into the roof and ran amok poo-ing everywhere in the loft. I have a new name for him now, but that's not for here...

We spent a whole Sunday banging saucepans around in the loft trying to scare him out and then dh (swearing audibly) patching up the hole the little bugger had made.

Doodles and Buster are our dogs
Thelma and Louise are our cats, well Thelma is, Louise was she ended the story early by running in front of a car

Hey I know someone whose DH is called Woody and her ds is called Spike

Gingerbear · 15/09/2006 10:09

Our dog is called Max, it is one of the most popular names for dogs apparently.
DH had a dog called Rover when he was young.
Mum and Dad have had many dogs over the years: Saurab, Bonzo, Andy, Pepe, Sam, Tommy, Scally, and Fez. Quite a mixture. My favourite names ever were my mate at uni - he had Dirk dog and Kurt cat

Gingerbear · 15/09/2006 10:11

Oh, and another friend had cats called Yossarian and Ezechial.

1973magpie · 15/09/2006 10:15

We have Basil and Sidney the cats, and the goldfish are Trevor and Bowie (we also had Linda the fish, but sadly she passed away)

One jet black cat - Maya. Was a jaguar in central america in a former life, and her name relates to the Mayan people.

Dd (nearly 3) also has an imaginary cat fried she calls "Catki" who features quite prominently as well.

aDAdOnMumsnet · 15/09/2006 10:35

that's 'friend' not 'fried'! That would be cruel. and probably wouldn't taste nice.

NotAnOtter · 15/09/2006 10:36

my ginger boy is Bernard

Jazzi · 15/09/2006 10:41

Dog = Ralph
Cat = Toto

Greensleeves · 15/09/2006 10:42

Cat is called Pip. Rabbit (died recently ) was called Mr Nibbles.

When I was younger I had a rabbit called Goebbels.

Bugsy2 · 15/09/2006 10:44

What a fab thread. LOL at Samantha the rotweiler bounding out of the bushes!!!
Growing up two of our dogs had human names "Bobby" and "Russell" and one of the cats was called "Candy". Most of them had more trad pet names though.
However, the best names we used to have were for the rams (sheep). We had 007, Rocky, Maverick, JR, Dex & Dirty Den!!!!

Jazzi · 15/09/2006 10:45

A friend of mine has 2 dogs - Gary and Emma, fantastic names!

IdrisTheDragon · 15/09/2006 10:49

Our cat is called Philomena.

But is generally called Beanie.

fuzzywuzzy · 15/09/2006 10:49

Girl I work with has called her pet dog Harry, she was going to call him something else but a friend who'd just suffered a miscarriage called her and was asking about the dog, when my colleague realised that the name she had chosen for her dog, was the name her friend had given to the son she had miscarried.....
So she used the first name that came into her head and it's stuck.

Problem is Harry is a name she wanted to use for a son should she have one....!!!

Georgiesmum · 15/09/2006 13:12

I love human names for cats, all my have them

i have Brian and Chaz n Dave. My dog is Gypsy tho as I have to call her in public!

My inlaws have all their ogs called human names - Archie, masie and George - (which is very confusing when we are round as Georgie thinks Grandad is telling her to get to her bed!!)

Pinotmum · 15/09/2006 13:14

We've got a girl starting in our Pre-school next week called Gypsey. I may start a thread "Has your child got an animal name"

Quootiepie · 15/09/2006 13:15

I have a rough collie - Kerry... and a Jack Russell - Dougal (from Father Ted! Youd know why when you saw him!)

CountessDracula · 15/09/2006 13:15

Ours is called Ruby

When we got her there were no rubys now there are loads

cupcakes · 15/09/2006 13:16

Our dog is called Pan - I particularly didn't want a human name for him. I don't know why though as our cat is called Ruby.

cupcakes · 15/09/2006 13:16

ooh - x post!

When I was younger I had a cat called Lucy. Then mum got two pugs and she called them Henry and Winston.

I have 2 cats called Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm and 3 guinea pigs called Jelly, Jackson and Binka.

Also when I was a toddler we had a pug and a mongrel, dad name them and the pug was called Rubbish and the mongrel Bin.

WigWamBam · 15/09/2006 13:26

Our cat is called Nellie, but in my defence it's a shortened form of her real name which is Brunel (that's what you get for having a railway freak for a dh).

Some human names make brilliant pet names ... not sure Samantha for a Rottweiler is one of them though!
