Has your pet got a 'human' name?

Just wondering really ...
I, personally, can't stand it when people call their pets names like Mary or Amelia ...
The other day we were at the park and a woman was calling "Samantha, SAMANTHAAAAAA!" in a rather panicky sort of way. So I was about to go and offer my services to help her look for her toddler when a bloody great Rotweiler came bounding out of the bushes ...
On another thread a lady wants to call her baby girl a name she already gave her dog so now she can't ....
We have always had non human names for pets - our cat is called Woody ... after Woody from Toy Story ... my parents had a great dane called Pluto and a ginger cat called Robinson's Golden Shred (Goldie to his friends).
So ... a reverse thread - instead of bizarre names for children (like Spike or Elmo, which are pets' names IMO) thread ....
What is your pet called and why?

We have used an assortment for various animals over the years - amongst the earliest were three kittens (arrived here, sex unknown) so we had to pick something that was neither male or female - Snap, Crackle and Pop (guess what was for breakfast in those days )

We went on to a herbal theme, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Tommy-thyme.

One kitten was given to us, rather wild, in a Clairol footspa box. She was Claire.

Two wild cats turned up out of the blue, and adopted us temporarily. Dh called them Leroy and Rastas as he just LOVED to call them and would crack up laughing. (fortunately, no near neighbours. Thank goodness for small mercies.)

Thomcat · 15/09/2006 21:41

No, my cat is called Fletcher and I had a dog called Kaos once but, I had a friend who called her dog Tony and it cracks me up every time. Apparently the dog had eyes like Tony Curtis! It was a Jack Russell.
Giggling now - Tony the dog! PMSL!

ledodgyrobespierre · 16/09/2006 13:00

I have a cat called Charlie and did have cats called Oscar and George. They were my babies before I had real ones and I used names I liked on them. I did shoot myself in the foot with this one though as when i had a boy although I love the name Oscar I couldn't bring myself to call him that because that had been my cats name so in the end we called my ds jack which incidently had been my dp's first dogs name..oh well!

hunkermunker · 16/09/2006 13:04

I used names for my hamsters that I liked but that would never be used by me for children (because they had "ee" endings and so does our surname, which sounds twee and wank for a child, but OK for a hamster ).

So I've had hamsters called Phoebe, Suki, Posy, Honey and Cherry.

I saw a cat called Dave on Pet Rescue years ago and it struck me as hilarious (they adopted another one they called Maeve, I think). ROFL at Tony the dog for similar reasons, TC

intergalacticwalrus · 16/09/2006 13:06

My Mum's old next door neighbours used to have a dog called Roy.

QueenEagle · 16/09/2006 13:06

I have a cat called Lucy - she often gets it lengthened to Lucifer though. My dearly deceased cat Jess was so-called after Postman Pat's cat; the kids chose that one!

My stepmother has two Welsh Springers called Millie and Daisy.

My gran has a dof called Murphy.

Strangest names imo my family have for their dogs are Tigger and Simba - I mean they are cats aren't they?

QueenEagle · 16/09/2006 13:08

We have non-human names for our gerbils though. Boo because he seems to like hide and seek, Orson after the pop band (dd's fault) and Dizzy as he's the ones who loves running round on the wheel!

A · 18/09/2006 19:39

Our cat is Stuart - he came with the name from a friend. Mix up cat and children's names from time to time....

lou33 · 18/09/2006 19:43

we have a black and white kitten called midnight

it was the third name suggested, after snowball and ginger...

pointydog · 18/09/2006 20:36

I like human names for pets. Makes me larf. Unfortunately small child named the cat and kids just don't like human names so much. No sense of humour.

mummyplonk · 18/09/2006 20:45

A - am loving Stuart LOL

Had an ex-boyfriend with a cat called "Fat Pig"

TwoIfBySea · 18/09/2006 20:53

Alex the dog is named after the lion in Madagascar. The name chosen by dts, as was the name of our goldfish, Nemo. Our cat is called Paris, not after the vacant looking hotel person but my husband was a fan of Star Trek Voyager and one of the characters had a surname Paris.

I would love to have named a child Alexander or Alexandra as they are both lovely names. However I have an uncle and cousin with those names and neither person is particularly nice! So it suits the dog.

dazzlincaz · 18/09/2006 21:19

When we were kids we had a cat called Minstrel..........because he was black and white!
