Has your pet got a 'human' name?

Just wondering really ...
I, personally, can't stand it when people call their pets names like Mary or Amelia ...
The other day we were at the park and a woman was calling "Samantha, SAMANTHAAAAAA!" in a rather panicky sort of way. So I was about to go and offer my services to help her look for her toddler when a bloody great Rotweiler came bounding out of the bushes ...
On another thread a lady wants to call her baby girl a name she already gave her dog so now she can't ....
We have always had non human names for pets - our cat is called Woody ... after Woody from Toy Story ... my parents had a great dane called Pluto and a ginger cat called Robinson's Golden Shred (Goldie to his friends).
So ... a reverse thread - instead of bizarre names for children (like Spike or Elmo, which are pets' names IMO) thread ....
What is your pet called and why?

I have dog called Sam (Samson named by breeders) and Aston.

As child had cats called Snowy (black and white) and Henry...

Get your point though... I think lots of people have pets before children.....

I always thought pets were for the really really cool names you wanted to call your kids, but realised that they would date to quickly/sound silly on a small baby.

On the other hand I also think that you should not call your animal any name that makes you feel stupid when calling it in e.g. fluffybumkins.

I didn't name my cats - got them from RSPCA and they were already named.
Got HArry(deceased), Jasmine and Cassie(male). Known to ds as Cazzy and Mazzy

We have had lots of hamsters:
2 when I was a child called Herbert and Humphrey,
DH (then DP) & I had 2 called Fermat & Fibonnacci (DP was a Maths student)
My kids have had;
Nora (because she did)
Heidi (because she did)
Spiller (you can see where I'm going with this..)
Then there were 2 gerbils called Scott & Vergil (DH is also a Thunderbirds fan)
and 2 Russian hamsters called after 2 people at DH's work: Annabelle because she ran round & round on the treadmill all day & Victoria because she sat in the corner & preened herself.

We have 3 cats Eva, Doris and Emily. Doris named by dd (she named her after a friends gran - why?) Emily named by ds (after a girl he fancies) and Eva by dh because he likes the name. Other names used by family are Ptolomy and Seuliman (my dm had a bit of a thing about giving her beloved siamese cats a regal name befitting their grace!)Witch (lurcher - dog) Able (grayhound - he was an "able" runner ha!) Sandra (my ferret - well I was about 7 at the time!)Jack (the jackdaw - ie Jack the door - ooohhh the wit!). Loads more names, we had Bill (the bull calf - I kid you not!) Lobelia the goat, Grizzle the badger, the list goes on........won't bore you though because I am the thread killer!!!!!!

serenity · 15/09/2006 18:09

Well we've currently got two gerbils called Scooby and Doo, and two fish called .........fish (just can't bring myself to name fish)

I've had cats called Sunday and Cassandra (known as Cassiecat), DHs cat was called Whiskey (named by his DSis after his whiskers, not the drink!)

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 15/09/2006 18:15

I'm the exact opposite of you Ghostie, I really like human names for pets. I think most - but not all - other names are twee. Woody is good - it's a bit of a half-way house. But don;t like Pluto. I like human names that I wouldn;t give to a child. We had a dog called Hector (not that my brother was a fan of Hector's house at all).

edam · 15/09/2006 18:18

My cat's called Esme. Not my choice, exactly. When we acquired her, she was called Clive (previous owner thought it was funny to have a pair of female cats called Derek and Clive). Thought we'd see if she was willing to change. Happened to have some friends over and spent most of the evening drinking wine and suggesting names. She ignored all of them until someone came up with Esme. Tried others, just in case it was chance, but she was very definite about Esme.

Previous family cats have all had non-human names but this one just likes Esme!

Cassoulet · 15/09/2006 18:19

I started with a cat called Helica because of the way she chased her tail. Then I got a companion for her and someone told me I should stick with the geometry-theme so I ended up calling her Euclid.

I then got Poo-cat, who is actually called Apuyyak (eskimo for dirty snow, I think - yes, thoroughly pretentious) and this year we got Tabby for my dd, who named him because he's ..... tabby! (So inventive).

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 15/09/2006 18:22

we had a cat called Raisin - we inherited him and I hated the name. It's revoltingly twee. Seems less so though when you take into account that he was originally called Resin but that it was sanitised when he moved from living with a dope fiend to living with dope fiend's girlfriend's parents.

ilovecaboose · 15/09/2006 18:25

we looked after a dog for three years (while owner was posted abroad) that was named budgie (short for conservative budget apparently) NOw that was embarassing.

It got to the point where I thought if I heard the joke 'but its a dog' one more time I'd scream.

twocatsonthebed · 15/09/2006 19:32

oh, and I have a friend who named her cat Tabernacle. In her defence, she was 7 at the time.

natmeistergeneral · 15/09/2006 19:38

Our cat is called Dennis Bergkamp!

CountessDracula · 15/09/2006 19:51

Fantastic!

alibobble · 15/09/2006 19:51

Our cat is called cloe which made me laugh when I read it was the most popular baby name for that year. Clearly a substitute thing going on at the time!
