Has your pet got a 'human' name?

Just wondering really ...
I, personally, can't stand it when people call their pets names like Mary or Amelia ...
The other day we were at the park and a woman was calling "Samantha, SAMANTHAAAAAA!" in a rather panicky sort of way. So I was about to go and offer my services to help her look for her toddler when a bloody great Rotweiler came bounding out of the bushes ...
On another thread a lady wants to call her baby girl a name she already gave her dog so now she can't ....
We have always had non human names for pets - our cat is called Woody ... after Woody from Toy Story ... my parents had a great dane called Pluto and a ginger cat called Robinson's Golden Shred (Goldie to his friends).
So ... a reverse thread - instead of bizarre names for children (like Spike or Elmo, which are pets' names IMO) thread ....
What is your pet called and why?

We have labrador called Molly- who i swear IS human!!

YellowFeathers · 15/09/2006 08:39

Our dog (Beagle) is called Oliver. We took ages trying to think of a name. All we could think of was Barney or Barnes after dh's stupid John Barnes obsession, lol. It was MIL who suggested it and we really liked it.
Even considered it for 5 mins when I was pg, lol!

Not so sure about all human names suiting pets but personally I hate names like dusty or bubbles. There a bit naff.

BettySpaghetti · 15/09/2006 09:06

I knew a single man with a cat called Alan - loved the idea of him standing on his doorstep calling "Alan..Alan" .

Our animals have always had very non-human names.

My DH was named Tim after a cat his mum had owned, and his sister was named Sally after the dog... I think she was just practicing with naming the pets.

My old cat was called Eartha (being Eartha Kitten), but then that isn't a name I'd inflict on any child. The current incumbents are Quink and Windsor (we were fostering a litter of four kittens, all black, the other two were Parker and Newton...)

expatinscotland · 15/09/2006 09:09

No, but it does suit some animals b/c they are like little people.

Panyanpickle77 · 15/09/2006 09:11

I have a dog called Dolly (full name Dolores Paws!) and another called Harry (full name Harry Strider!). My mom has a cat called Polly and one called jack, and my uncle has a cat called Colin!!! and one called Pearl!
Naff, but funny!

expatinscotland · 15/09/2006 09:12

I like it when they have human names that you wouldn't call a modern human. Like Eadulf.

I knew a gal who had a dog called Thomasin, after the Hardy novel.

niceglasses · 15/09/2006 09:13

We have Pat (the cat). Usually gets Patsy even tho its a boy.

TheRealCam · 15/09/2006 09:24

As a child we had a cat called Jinksy and 2 goldfish called Pixie and Dixie (they were from a children's cartoon of the era except Pixie and Dixie were mice in the cartoon)

Childhood dogs: Sweep, Scamp and Spot (I didn't say they were original did I?)

My dd1's hamsters: Jasper and Jasmine (and a rat called Joe). Her cat: Jemima (can you see a "J" theme?)

My dd2's hamsters: Yasmine and, currently,Chocolate

All of these names were chosen by children (and are therefore somewhat cutesy) but what really makes me snigger is when adults buy a dog and call it something like Dave or Pete.

TheRealCam · 15/09/2006 09:27

Someone I knew who had 3 sons and really wanted a girl called her 2 dogs Sophie and Chloe and referred to them as "the girls"

I love hearing traditional names for pets. Our cats were Samuel, Angus, and Oliver. There was a cat lived near us once called Colin.

I used to know someone who had a pet snake called Jake.

CheesyFeet · 15/09/2006 09:45

We have Charlie the Cat

named after those ads in the 70's "Charlie says always tell your mummy before you go off somewhere meoorrrowwwww meeeoooowwww"

I wanted something like Dave, Reg or Ron but was talked out of it.

A mate of mine has Colin the Cat

southeastastra · 15/09/2006 09:47

oh i knew a colin cat too tinygang was he black?

1Baby1Bump · 15/09/2006 09:49

2 dogs, molly- because if we had a girl, dh said he wouldnt have molly and i loved it and bella- i dont know why but it suits her.

LiliLaTigresse · 15/09/2006 09:51

we have a dog called Mac, which really suits him I think (thought about calling him George though at first...)
my SIL had a dopey doberman called Daisy!!

TinyGang · 15/09/2006 09:54

No, tabby I think..but it's a great name for a cat, glad to hear about a couple more out there.

Just reading this thread more carefully - I love some of your pets names - a hampster called Dave, a cat called Basil, a dog called John. Excellent.

I guess it is important not to choose names you really really love though just in case you ever need it for a baby.

NomDePlume · 15/09/2006 09:54

I'm the complete opposite to you Ghosty, twee animal names make me gag. I like human names for pets, hence we have...

Alfie - Cat
Hattie - Hamster
William - Squirrel (lives in the huge tree in our front garden)
