How many people on here have been assaulted/raped and have either reported or not reported it?

I found out that the conviction rate rapes was just 6% . 6% of reported rapes. There are many many many more that go unreported. I want to know roughly what kind of figure we are looking at. Please change your name if need be, but do post.....

I'll start..

Me - unreported.

Donbean · 13/09/2006 20:47

yes thanks, hope everything is good with you and gorgeous dd x

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/09/2006 20:48

Most often its one persons word against another.

And then - what constitutes "no", and the issue of consent.

And then - if it does go to trial, the victim is put on trial as well as the defendent. That is particularly harrowing.

Few rapes are stranger rapes. Although I gather the conviction rate of 6% is made up of a high % of stranger ones - easier to prove the no/consent thing I guess.....

sexually abused whilst in a relationaship, not reported

twinsetandpearls · 13/09/2006 20:48

I can also think of one other occasion when I have said no and the guy has persisted - but then again I am not blameless was starkers in some blokes bed and then changed my mind.

CountTo10 · 13/09/2006 20:48

Me - unreported

and it wasn't reported as it was someone I knew and i didn't think I'd be believed

Mum - unreported, at a time when rape was not considered something women reported or talked about

Jazzi · 13/09/2006 20:48

Yes me, and I recently found out my brother as well, by the same person.

twinsetandpearls · 13/09/2006 20:49

I bet the majority of people who are raped by someone they know don't report it, too mnay of us think of rape as something that happens between strangers

SpaceCadet · 13/09/2006 20:49

i didnt report it because he was a "friend", i thought he was offering support as i was on my own after having ds1 as my xp had left me.
he decided otherwise, id only given birth 6 weeks previously..i just knew that no one would beleive me.

Donbean · 13/09/2006 20:49

Good God MP, how fucking horrific...

laneydaye · 13/09/2006 20:49

oh well then twin set thats ok then.....the bastard

Mercy · 13/09/2006 20:50

VVV, can you define what you mean by assaulted, or should we have our own definiton? (and I assume you mean sexual assualt?)

twinsetandpearls · 13/09/2006 20:50

not saying either man can be excused or their actions were ok, but I was not blamesless either

laneydaye · 13/09/2006 20:51

how sad that nothing can be done about these horrific crimes

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/09/2006 20:51

Did you report MP?

I've had more than one experience as well - all unrelated too. "known" every man too.

morningpaper · 13/09/2006 20:51

I have always thought, in my head, that "most" women have probably been in a very bad situation with a man at some point. I think it's part of life's rich experience.

I know that's just an AWFUL thing to say. I am not a man-hater at all. But it's just so incredibly common.

It worries me, being the mother of girls.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/09/2006 20:52

I do mean sexual assault, yes Mercy.

Me - reported, was horrendous experience and god forbid it ever happened again, I wouldn't report it

twinsetandpearls · 13/09/2006 20:53

sadly mp I think you may be right , not all women ahve been raped and not all men are rapists but I best most women have felt pressurised or felt they have gone too far to say no.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/09/2006 20:54

Oh, I'd bet 99% of women on here who've been assaulted, the man in question was someone they knew.

Me - once or twice (depending on what counts, unrelated), unreported. Both times it was "date rape", not "stranger rape". I felt guilty and confused. I was young.

Donbean · 13/09/2006 20:54

I must then be in the minority as nothing like this has ever happened to me thank goodness.

sorrell · 13/09/2006 20:54

Can I just say how bloody brave and brilliant you all are. You are fantastic women.

Unfortunately laneyday it takes time. Its only in the last 5 years that the law has been changed to prevent rapists standing trial from defending themselves therefore being able to cross examine their victim. Its only in the last 5 years that defence teams have been prevented calling into question the victim sexual preferences/history although they still try and its only in the last 30 years that a man raping his wife has been considered illegal!! External evidence never used to be taken, the police was a largely male dominated profession that considered rape as a woman's revenge for being dumped. Did anyone ever see a program showed in the 70's/80's about Reading Police? It kind of said it all really.
