What do you think about the mumsnet books concept?

I feel odd about it but I'm not sure why.

The books sound like a great idea. New mums especially are always on the look out for practical help and advice and would make good gift items.
I would be fine with paying a sub to access the site but you will lose subscibers if it's compulsory.
The sliding scale is a v good idea as people tend to be more generous when they don't feel obliged to be.

I don't know where I would have been with out Mumsnet in the last eighteen months I think a subscription is fine. Good luck with the books all...

Rhubarb · 20/05/2002 13:29

I don't mind paying a subscription or sending in reviews. Mumsnet has been a life-saver to me on more than one occasion and I don't want to see it go.

WideWebWitch · 11/07/2002 13:11

I've just got an email about this and paid a subscription, so I've put my money where my mouth is! Let's hope it works and mumsnet stays in existence...

PamT · 11/07/2002 13:55

I've just received the email too and will send a donation, though unfortunately I don't have a lot of disposable income so even though I am a daily addict I won't be able to give the suggested amount. I wish I'd known about Mumsnet or similar message boards when my children were babies.

Just a thought, Bounty seem to get to most new parents, could Mumsnet get some publicity through their freebie packs? Whether this is to advertise the books or the site (for which people would later subscribe), it might be worth an initial outlay. I'm glad that I wasn't asked to subscribe before I became addicted otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered looking at all. Mumsnet provides help to anyone who asks and even just a listening ear can make all the difference.

Will be posting my cheque tomorrow - well worth it (great idea to have the draw for the holiday for new subscribers - it could be you ...)

bayleaf · 11/07/2002 18:36

Has EVERYONE been e mailed???? I haven't received anything! Don't they want my money????

Marina · 11/07/2002 19:14

Tell them you haven't heard from them, Bayleaf - I bet they'll be thrilled to have volunteers queueing up to pay. My cheque's in the post too, I think this website is the tops!

PamT · 11/07/2002 19:37

I thought they had just emailed me because it is about a month since I started posting here. There is actually a 'subscribe here' link on the home page. It is somewhere on the right hand side towards the bottom of the page I think, either that or it is in the Sunsail holiday bit.

PamT · 11/07/2002 20:20

All these people throwing money at Mumsnet is lengthening the odds on me winning the holiday! BTW, anyone know what you do if there are 5 of you and you win a holiday for 4?

Tetley · 11/07/2002 20:29

I've just looked where you said - PamT, and paid up! I Hadn't receieved an e-mail but I do look on here most days, and have got a lot of helpful advice from this site, so feel happier now I've made a contribution. Good job they take credit cards online though - as I'd never have got round to sending a cheque....

Sorry - but that's one more person in the holiday draw

PamT · 11/07/2002 20:34

I don't know what I'm going to do when I go away in August (in our touring caravan to North Yorkshire and more than likely sitting watching the rain streaming down). I'll have no Mumsnet to chat to, I'm sure I'll get terrible withdrawal symptoms, then it will take me 3 days to catch up when I come home again - I don't want to go!

I've got the perfect solution if I do win the holiday for 4 though, DH can take the three kids and I can have a whole week off to do what I want (and spend all day on Mumsnet) - now that's what I call a holiday!

tigermoth · 12/07/2002 11:25

Didn't get an email either, but the cheque's in the post. I think it's a very good idea that people can still enter mumsnet talk for free, especially new members who are not yet hooked.

I hope the subscriptions come rolling in.

sobernow, I am in a similar position. With the amount of time I have spent on here recently I should be paying several hundred pounds I think but I'm not able to pay the suggested amount either. I have however said that I would be more than happy to contribute again in the future and possibly make it an annual payment - but I'll need reminding!

justiner · 12/07/2002 12:26

Hi all,
Many thanks for your supportive words and your subscriptions - we've had a great response in the first two days.
Sobernow - please don't worry about how much you use the site. The whole point of making subscription voluntary, and the amount you give flexible, is to reflect people's ability to pay. We really do appreciate all contributions and every contribution helps.
Tigermoth and Bayleaf, if you didn't get a subscription mail it means that we don't have a good email address for you (could you have changed addresses since you first registered?) You can easily update your profile by following the link from our member help page www.mumsnet.com/memberhelp.html
PamT, thanks for the Bounty suggestion. We did some research into this a while back and found out it costs around £80,000 to get into the Bounty packs. Generous as you've all been it might be a while before we can afford that sort marketing!
Thanks again for your support and good luck in the competition.
Justine, Carrie and Rachel.

Pamina, the journalist types would be very difficult to police as unless someone states their interest to begin with, they can just log on as a regular person and change names and circumstances to fit stories.

If you don't want to put off potential newcomers then this might be one of the things we have to go with. I would say that anyone researching would have to go through a lot of threads to dind a particular answer to anything.

tech · 13/07/2002 11:45

Hi Batters, send us a note at [email protected] and let us know your new email address and we'll change it for you.

Best wishes,
Tech

tech · 13/07/2002 11:54

Hi Bayleaf, we seem to have a bad email address for you. I just tried to send you the email and it bounced back "user unknown". Could you drop me a note at [email protected] and let me know the correct address and we'll fix it.

Best wishes,
Tech

tech · 13/07/2002 11:56

Forgot to say - tigermoth - we've sent you a copy. You should get the notes in future.
