What do you think about the mumsnet books concept?

I feel odd about it but I'm not sure why.

OP posts:
Tinker · 13/07/2002 23:59

Me neither

jasper · 14/07/2002 03:54

Okay chaps , I am going to post what I sent to a fellow mumsnetter...you don't have to agree with me but all comments invited

.Like you I would NOT buy a parenting mag! Also I feel , without being big headed that regular contributors like you and I are what makes mumsnet a success, so should we really pay for the privillege? Reminds me of my first job - I built from scratch a dental practice set up and owned by someone else who a year down the line offered it to me for sale, including a price for the goodwill which I alone had created!

I am not quite sure what expenses are involved for them, I would like them to have made this clearer - is it just expenses or are they looking to be paid ( not that I am saying this is wrong)
I strongly suspect the aspect of mumsnet most utilised is the boards. I could live without all the other stuff and it may be the other stuff which takes more time/expense-. perhaps they could cut some of it out.

I didn't get an email either, though I haven't changed addie. When I went into the subs bit from the home page it said they knew I wasn't at my usual computer, so presumably that's why I didn't get an email. What I want to know is how do they know this isn't my usual computer???? Is Big Brother watching me???? It's spooky!!

I've not had an email either, strange as I had one from them acknowledging my suggestion for the 'questions to an author' so I know my email addy is Okay!

I have to agree with Sobernow. I don't expect anyone to provide something for nothing. Especially something as well run as Mumsnet. Just keeping it up and online in some sort of graphic sense without any major technical quirks is a feat in and of itself. I'm sure more than one person is working full time on mumsnet doing this and I am quite happy to contribute to their salary. I just hope there are enough of us (+ the necessary evil of advertisers) to keep it going. It certainly has been a lifeline for me living far away from my friends and family with a small child and another on the way.

batey · 14/07/2002 09:54

What's the postal address for subsriction contributions?

PamT · 14/07/2002 10:49

Have a look on the home page under the Sunsail holiday draw. There is a link for how to subscribe and the address is under here, but it is a PO Box number.

tech · 14/07/2002 11:14

Hi, Alibubbles and ks,
When someone joins mumsnet - and on the member profile page here - there is a box that says "We occasionally send email notices with news from mumsnet... Please tick here if you do NOT wish to receive these notices." You both have ticks. This means you won't get the child development calendar, parenting news and news about mumsnet emails. If you write to us directly though, or send an expert question, we will reply. If you take your ticks off, we'll happily start sending the regular messages again.
Best wishes,
Tech

WideWebWitch · 14/07/2002 12:20

A question for Tech: can we buy subscriptions for friends who are about to become parents? And if so, how do we do it?

Just reread my last post which reminds me not to post when having consumed large quantities of wine
I am NOT opposed to paying a subscription to mumsnet ( cheque's in the post )nor do I think there is anything wrong with making a profit from running the site.
I do hope the voluntarty subscription idea does not change the nature of mumsnet ( ie put people off joining/posting)

pupuce · 14/07/2002 21:37

Jasper - I see where you are coming from and I think you raise legitimate questions... after all Mumsnet is a place for all opinions - isn't it ?

So I support your views and my cheque is also in the post..... what if Bloss and I are the resident GF experts... do we get paid ????? JUST KIDDING !

SofiaAmes · 14/07/2002 21:38

hey tech,(sorry i'm too lazy to look for a better place to put this)....How about moving the "add a message" box to the top of the page, so on the really long threads you don't have to scroll forever to get to it. The "click here" to add a message choice at the top of the page doesn't seemto work for me (i'm on a mac ... maybe that's why).

pupuce · 14/07/2002 21:44

I also have the same prob... also on a Mac

Tinker · 15/07/2002 00:10

If I send a subscription, can I not be on the roll of honour thing? Don't like that at all.

jasper · 15/07/2002 03:56

I agree Tinker.
Does anyone like that idea?

PamT · 15/07/2002 06:34

It would be nice to see just how many members Mumsnet has but I don't particularly want to be named either.

Perhaps there could be a little paragraph on the home page which says how many members and how many subscribers there are to the site.

mollipops · 15/07/2002 08:58

I was all excited about the idea of contributing when I first got the email, and then I did my foreign currency calculator thing and it turned out that 25 pounds is about A$73 (a fair bit more than a magazine subscription is here in any case!), and even 10 pounds is about A$27...yes I know it's still about a cappucino a month. What scared me is how much it must cost to live over there...is it really almost A$150 (50 pounds) to go out for dinner? Goodness me! Anyway I will still be sending my little Aussie bit in, but I'm afraid it may not seem like much in pounds!

Great to see all the support so far for the site. It just goes to show what a spirit of "community" can achieve.

mollipops · 15/07/2002 09:01

P.S. If we contribute enough, can we get rid of that awful pop-up box that asks about which fruit drink you prefer?? PUH-LEEEASE!!!

Rhiannon · 15/07/2002 10:38

I subscribed last night. R

justiner · 15/07/2002 11:20

Hi everyone,
Lots of things to cover, here goes...
Jasper - please don't apologise, you make a good point in that much of the site's worth is down to the quality of contributions from the members. Unfortunately, though, it does cost money to run it: We have server, net access and a very small editorial cost (our experts answer questions for nothing by the way). By far the biggest cost is in the time and effort of four people (three pretty much full-time, one evenings and weekends).
We have never been paid (in over 2 years), despite the fact we've have childcare costs etc. Please understand we are not looking for profits but there comes a time when you think you can't go on doing something for nothing forever - quite apart from anything else, it's not fair on our families.
You could argue that we shouldn't bother with expert questions, product reviews, a noticeboard, updating the home page, developmental emails, competitons etc. Just have a talk board up there - this would demand less time to run and oversee. The problem is I don't think we attract new members that way and mumsnet would fast become a closed community.

Actually we don't expect subscription to raise enough to pay us a salary (intially at least) but it's a start and the more people who join (and hopefully we will continue to grow and the books will bring many more members), the more chance we will have of making mumsnet viable. (Particularly if the climate improves and we can start attracting some decent advertising revenue/ sponsorship). If we don't it will fold... simple as that.
Tinker, you have the option of not being on the subscribers page - if you pay by credit card - just untick the box, if you pay by cheque/ PO box, don't include your nickname. I can see why you may not want to be included (you noble soul!) but we'd very much like to publicly thank people who don't mind being thanked.
PamT I think the total number of subscribers tally is a great idea and we'll get on to it (may take a few days as tech is in NYC!)
SofiaAmes/pupuce will raise you're point with tech on his return.

Wickedwaterwitch - gift subscription is on its way - it was an idea that one of the members came up with when we first discussed subscription and it's a really good one - it's just technically a bit more complicated than ordinary subscription. Give us a couple of weeks.

SueW we have always posted major site news/ mail outs on the home page of the site (the one that went out about subscription is here www.mumsnet.com/s/mn.SubsIntro)
We'll make a point to always post them on talk as well from now on. You could of course just change your preference to receive mails from us. You'd only get our fortnightly parenting news round up (very handy and not that long) and development emails charting your child's progress until age 5 (they are really good quality, honest!)
Mollipops, the pop ends tomorrow - sorry for the annoyance (it covers a month's server costs, though!)

Thanks again for all you suggestions/ support,
Justine, Carrie and Rachel

tigermoth · 15/07/2002 11:44

Just to say I am totally happy with the idea of a market research survery, like the drinks one, popping up on mumsnet if it helps pay the bills. It only takes a minute or two to fill in - what's the matter with that? After all, you can just close it if you want to.

Hope mumsnet prospers soon, and the team get at the very least, their childcare costs covered. How many of us with young families
would work a substantial number of hours a week for two years with no pay whatsoever?

Just back to the books concept. Is it possible for someone on the team to tell us when the cut-off point is for contributions? It's quite a long time ago since we were all asked if we wanted any of our messages excluded from the book.

pupuce · 15/07/2002 11:57

Tigermoth I agree BUT I believe once you have gone on the home page and have seen the box once, their should be a cookie which let's them know we have been asked... don't ask again.
