Find out what MNers thought of JimJams 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread! NOW CLOSED

JimJams asked us to find 250 Mumsnetters to test their hazelnut chocolate spread. Each lucky tester was sent one 350g jar of the low sugar spread to share with their families, spread on toast and eat with a spoon. Read the comments below to find out what they thought!

Here’s what JimJams co-founder, Kellie Bath, has to say about the 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread: "As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are kinder to teeth and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO."

Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Mixed response: I really liked it, 10 yr old liked it too, but 13 yr old felt it had an after taste "the chocolate taste disappears, and you're left with a nutty taste instead". I liked the texture, and I find nutella a bit claggy, but children preferred texture of nutella

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Less sugar is a positive, but artificial sweeteners is a negative, so swings and roundabouts.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
It was less artificial than I thought it would be - I was pleasantly surprised. And i liked the texture.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
If the older one had liked it, yes I would have,
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Chocolate orange? I think adding flavours may distinguish you from nutella, eg.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Maybe sometimes

FrootLoops · 31/07/2017 11:37

Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes. We all love hazlenut chocolate spread and the children thought the Jim Jams spread tasted a little different but just as good as the usual brand we buy, DH really liked it and I could taste more hazlenut which was great. To be honest I did not expect such a good reaction from everyone.

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes. It is is constant battle trying to keep the children eating healthily, this is great because there is no taste compromise. I will buy this in future.

White chocolate and a chocolate and peanut butter spread are the suggestions from my family.

6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Yes. It was a winner here.

Just wondering if the survey has been sent out yet? As I didn't get a email letting me know I was testing (& then the jar just turned up) frightened the survey hasn't been emailed out to me either.

userinfinity · 31/07/2017 13:37
  1. Yup, the fam enjoyed it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I felt there was an oily after taste . It certainly doesn't taste just sugar, can taste the nuttiness.
  1. Definitely, always looking for a way to switch to healthier options.
  1. I was surprised at the smooth consistency, easy to spread (also easy to over spread too!)
  1. Yes I would purchase again esp knowing it has a great taste with reduced sugar
  1. Coconut flavour. I would also like to see a powdered kids milkshake range as these are also high in sugar
  1. If my kids are happy eating something that is better for them nutritionally than their existing product, then why not?!

Thank you for the chance to test this product

My husband and I both liked it and my eldest son loved it, my daughter did not- she felt it was too nutty and was able to identify it when I gave it a week later under the guise of our normal brand so she obviously recognised it and wasn't just being difficult!

RupertsMum2 · 31/07/2017 17:31

Thank you for the chance to test Jim-Jams. I hadn't told ds3 that we had been selected (I had forgotten myself) so it was a lovely surprise when it arrived.

Here's what we thought of it:-

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
It's usually only ds3 who eats chocolate spread however ds2 had some and really liked it. I'm eating low carb at the moment so couldn't test it properly but my finger slipped into the jar a couple of times and it tasted very nice.

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes. Ds3 has a very sweet tooth and definitely eats too much sugar. It's great to find something he loves with less sugar.

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
It was incredibly nutty.

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes, definitely.

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
A low carb chocolate spread would be good!!!

6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Yes, I would

TweeBee · 31/07/2017 17:38

I was really pleased to be chosen as a tester for this chocolate spread. It arrived in the middle of last week so we have tested it with a variety of things.
I'm sorry but I can't work out how to copy and paste on the app, but here are my answers to the above questions.

  1. Yes, we all really enjoyed the taste. We had it with banana pancakes, waffles and made ice cream with it. My oldest DC said she preferred it to Nutella and, whilst I didn't think it was the same, I certainly thought it was just as nice.
  2. Yes, I do like Nutella and other spreads, but really limit them due to the sugar content. As this is much lower in sugar, I felt more relaxed about the DC eating it. The difference in sugar content would be the main selling point for me.
  3. I was pleasantly surprised at how rich it was. With it being much lower in sugar, I expected it to be quite bland but it was both chocolatey and hazelnutty and seemed just as rich and creamy as other brands.
  4. Yes, I will definitely buy it again. This will be the chocolate spread we buy in the future.
  5. We would like to try chocolate and salted caramel, chocolate and peanut butter - we love the sweet and salty combo. DC would like chocolate with biscuit pieces.
  6. Yes, I will buy Jim Jams in the future.
Spirael · 31/07/2017 18:00

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes, the kids loved it and I couldn't taste much difference between it and another popular chocolate and hazelnut spread. ;)

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
It puts me in a bit of a conundrum, because while I like the fact that there's less sugar, it's basically been replaced with sweetener. Either way, it's a product I'd give as a treat only rather than an everyday flavour.

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
I had some spare pizza dough left after making dinner, so made a mini chocolate pizza with marshmallows and the chocolate spread. I was expecting the spread to separate, but it held together and actually was very nice!

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
I'd certainly consider it, depending on the price.

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
We love mint, so a chocolate and mint flavour would go down well here. Preferably dark chocolate!

6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Perhaps, depending on price.

ClaireJ89 · 31/07/2017 18:26

It was really easy to spread and the texture was lovely and not cloyey or greasy at all
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Definitely.

4boysandonemore · 31/07/2017 19:28

1.We loved the JimJams spread ! As soon as we got it , me and my sons had some spread on Melba toasts .It was also lovely slightly melted in a dish and we dipped fruit in it too .

  1. The fact it has 83% less sugar definitely makes it more appealing to buy as most families do like to keep the sugar content down in their children's food if they can.
  2. What surprised me was how chocolatey it tasted and not at all artificial like some other products .
  3. I would definitely purchase this chocolate spread again
  4. White Chocolate , Mint Chocolate or maybe caramel flavours would be nice too .
  5. I would definitely swap , the 83% less sugar is a real winner for me
feenan761 · 31/07/2017 20:16

Disappointed - my kids don't rate it :-(

Upon tasting it, although there is an underlying nutty taste, it is really quite synthetic tasting.

I had high hopes for this spread as I love the fact it has 83% less sugar and although the overall fat content is higher than the Ntla brand the saturated fat was lower so win win! or it should have been but my kids won't eat it.

Thanks for the opportunity to try it but unfortunately you haven't won over this household - we will have to stick to the Ntla brand

kierie · 31/07/2017 20:53
  1. Yes! Very much. Noone could tell that it wasn't our usual brand.
  2. Yes, it feels like a less naughty version.

  5. Marshmallows!
  6. Probably, depending on price

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? Yes absolutely I will be buying JimJams instead of my usual chocolate spread.
  2. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? That it tasted so good I thought it wouldn't be as nice as it had so much less sugar but it tasted as good as Nutella my family didn't realise it was any different until they saw the jar.
  3. Would you purchase this product for your family again? Definitely
  4. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try? Chocolate orange or honeycomb.

Yes, I feel less terrible about them having it for breakfast.

Yes
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Absolutely.
2tired2bewitty · 31/07/2017 22:24

Thanks for letting me test this product. I've had family over to stay so it has been sampled by a large family group. We all agreed.

  1. We all enjoyed the taste of JimJams. I didn't expect to like it, but we did.
  1. It makes me feel better that there is less sugar. It was still sweet, but not overly so.
  1. I thought there would be a very strong aftertaste, but there wasn't. I also thought that it would taste really horrible compared to usual chocolate spreads. Pleasantly surprised on both counts.
  1. I'd buy it again if the price was right. I'd even be prepared to pay a little more knowing it's not so bad for my child's teeth.
  1. We'd be happy with just chocolate. I think they'd like chocolate orange flavour.
  1. Yes, I'd swap.
