Mind Candy asked us to recruit MNers with at least one DC aged 5-8 to test their new subscription service, containing fun Moshi-themed activities and games. The boxes work in conjunction with the Moshi Egg Hunt Mobile Game, which can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android. Selected testers were sent a letter from Moshlingologist Buster Bumblechops, enlisting their DCs to help in a quest to retrieve a special stolen egg. This was then followed up by the first in a series of Mystery Boxes, containing crafts and activities.

Here’s what Mind Candy have said about the product: ‘The experience begins when your DC receives an exciting personalised letter in the post, in which Buster Bumblechops explains that a very special Moshling egg has been stolen and that he’ll soon be sending a Moshi Mystery Box, jam-packed with clues, activities and missions. The first box contains fun art and craft activities, Moshi collectables, a comic strip, jokes and much more. And if you decide to sign up, there will be two more Moshi Mystery Boxes to follow.

A simple story runs across all three boxes, taking your child on a quest across Monstro City. Each box is also themed - box one is the Frostipop Glacier, two is Potion Ocean and three is all about the Gombala Gombala Jungle! The first box will also contain a pack of trading cards that can be scanned to unlock exclusive characters in the 100% free Moshi Monsters Egg Hunt Mobile Game!’

Testers - if you’ve been sent your mystery box, please leave your feedback on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw for a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Here are the questions Mind Candy would like you to answer:

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
- Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Thanks for taking part and good luck with the prize draw.

unfortunately mine hasn't arrived.

_What did your DC do first when they received their letter and box? My daughter was so excited and took her first letter into school to show her class mates. When the box came she had so much fun doing the experiments!

_Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? Yes my daughter is still playing with the toys that came and she had the most fun doing the experiments.

_Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? Not yet but we will be doing as she's always playing on apps and games,

_These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? I do feel it's quite expensive to be honest, my daughter really enjoyed this but couldn't justify paying that amount when a lot of it ends up in the bin.

_What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? It was a nice experience and my daughter loved getting something through the post addressed to herself.

_How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? Unfortunately not very likely due to the cost.

_ How do you think the experience could be improved? The cost of these boxes is abit expensive so this could be altered and maybe what's actually included in the box changed to accommodate this.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

DS6 jumped up and down, shouting Moshi Monsters!

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

Absolutely loved the ice balloon and kept repeatedly checking freezer to see if they were ready. Already asked if we can do it again tomorrow.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
DS noticed the App Store symbol on back of trading cards and asked to download app. We're waiting for his SD to come home tomorrow with the iPad.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

A little too expensive for what it is. We've had toucan boxes and Mister Maker boxes with similar crafts and very similar packaging for £5.95 a time.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

He loved it! Especially the letter addressed to him!

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Not very likely unless more Moshi monsters are included in each box.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

More Moshi monsters in each box especially for the price.

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? My DD loved her personalised letter, the letter came a week before the box arrived so we had a week of her asking daily if her mystery box had arrived.
Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? My daughter loved the little figure, she enjoys surprises so everything from the box was all great for the first 10 minutes and then she lost interest in everything. No she is not playing with anything from the box currently.
Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? yes we downloaded the mobile game, my daughter enjoyed this at first but then found the whole thing boring and she lost interest pretty quickly and moved onto her usual games.
These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? Far to expensive for what you get inside the box. My DD was excited at the thought of the box arriving after she had received the letter but this was short lived once the box had been received and opened. She was disappointed and the box was soon forgotten.
What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? DD loved the personalisation of the letter but overall she was disappointed by the mystery box, for her she was expecting something more rewarding and instead she was supplied with "make sheets" of things that she regularly prints of the internet and we complete together, the whole idea was nothing new.
How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? unlikely, I will not pay the price and my daughter is just not interested enough for me to warrant paying for a subscription.
How do you think the experience could be improved? the box needs to be more original, the letter was great and really provided the excitement but overall it was disappointing, I feel that this was because the box was filled with to many DIT activities and this to a 6 year old is just not exciting.

mistyegg · 04/07/2017 22:16
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

DD was really excited by the letter as it was a great surprise and kept talking about the parcel arriving for the whole week.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

The little moshling which is still occasionally being played with

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

No as no room on my phone

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Not worth it - I would not buy them

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

The experience was great but DD underwhelmed by the box contents and lost interest in less than an hour

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Not going to happen

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Not sure - may change contents of the box and less focus on online activities?

MumandMore11 · 05/07/2017 10:23
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
She enjoyed receiving post addressed to her and was very excited we sat and read the letter together and we sat and opened the box together.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The little Moshi toys were her favourite and she has put them with her other small toys and brings them out from time to time.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes we did, she lost interest quickly however she isn't really very into playing games on tablets and would rather play outside.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I personally think it's over priced and think £5 per box would be a more appropriate price.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
I have to be honest I think she was underwhelmed and would rather have got one of the little blind bag things with a moshi toy in.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
We won't be upgrading.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
I'm not really sure how it could be improved, maybe if they were making a world for the toys to play in or contained sheets with puzzles on we could complete together. I'm not too sure, maybe Moshi's just didn't appeal to my daughter it just didn't capture her imagination and she has a fantastic imagination.
NunoBettencourt · 05/07/2017 18:25

Here are the questions Mind Candy would like you to answer:

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
She opened everything excitedly and was ready to do the activities later.
  • Which was their favourite item from thebox and are they still playing with it?
She loves the toy and comic and then no, not still playing with it sorry. she got bored of the same thing.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
We didn't download the app but we will.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? Way Too expensive.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? They enjoyed it and she adored seeing her name on the letter and box
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? Not at all it's too expensive and dosen't seem worth it.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved? More things to do it was less interesting then she imagined.

Thank you for the chance to trial it however.

Indil · 05/07/2017 21:08
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? She was super exited about the letter being just for her and told all her friends at school. For the next few days, when she came home from school she checked for her box. It took a while to arrive so she had almost forgotten about it.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? She loved the little toys and still plays with them now.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? Yes she loves it and said, " I wish I had my own alarm clock so I could wake up at 6 to hatch my egg."
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? Overpriced unless more moshlings.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? Loved the idea, the toys and the cards for the game. Not impressed by the comic or puzzle. Totally riveted by the frozen egg activity. Not fussed with the rest as she has plenty of craft bits already.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? As she wasn't interested in the puzzle or most of the activities we would be unlikely to continue with a subscription.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved? Colour coded or numbered cards and activities as it was a bit confusing. My daughter is an excellent reader but still needed help with some words. More child friendly instructions etc would have been better.
Indil · 05/07/2017 21:10

Forgot to add that she now wants more trading cards.

shrunkenhead · 06/07/2017 16:12

Is anyone else still waiting...... I've had an email apologising and letting us know they will be sent out and we won't be penalised for not reviewing within the deadline (which is just as well!)....

Farin12 · 06/07/2017 22:45
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
She got really excited that the letter and box were addressed to her, made her feel grown up. She first did the Moshi egg painting then went onto hatching.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The moshling I think, the other bits were more of a do at the time thing
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
I didn't actually, she did the two activities then did lose a bit of interest in it. Probably more to do with it being sunny out than anything else tbh
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Too expensive I'm afraid
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
really enjoyed it, but probably needed a bit more input from me to keep her interested for longer
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Probably not at that price
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
I think the experience itself is great, kids love little collectible items. Maybe if it was cheaper I'd go onto buy further
AmeliaMumsnet · 07/07/2017 15:52

Hi Mumsnetters,

Below is a message from Mind Candy:

"Thank you for testing our Moshi Monsters Mystery Box trial. We received really informative feedback, and having listened to every single message, we have decided to head back and work on how we can make all of your excellent suggestions happen!

We're so pleased to hear you loved the personal little touches, activities and figurines, so we hope you'll join Buster Bumblechops in his future egg quests.

We didn't want the little ones to miss out on the final Moshling code (usually found from collecting all three boxes), so please find it included in the image attached!

Best, Team Moshi x"

Somtamthai · 08/07/2017 13:13

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

My daughter loved receiving a letter and box addressed to her and she took great care to open them. But once opened the contents were tipped and examined with pure excitement.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

The characters were by far the favourite and are now kept with her Lego which is her favourite toy and they have become part of her ongoing story.

She also loved the egg thing and wants to do it again.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

Yes she really liked the game but she doesn't get a lot of screen time really so doesn't play it so much. But she is 6 and could figure it out and play alone so I liked that aspect.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

A bit expensive. £7 or two for £10/£12 would be better.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

Loved the personalisation it was "hers" so unique she liked everything and she would like more boxes and moshi have became new favourites.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not at the current price if it had more contents or as a better price then we would.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

The idea is fantastic. I would love for my daughter to have a magazine/crafts that built into a collection. Id like to see a longer series, with build up. Like building a giant Moshi. Or having a bag or display for the collection.

triffer · 09/07/2017 16:03

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
He was very happy and excited, he looked at the Moshlings first.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
His favourite item was the pippette that was used to melt the eggs and he still plays with it
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Too expensive

He thought it was exciting and loved getting a letter and package in his name.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
We won't be as it's too expensive and only kept him occupied for a short amount of time.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
More experiments and not as expensive.
WhatABallsUp · 09/07/2017 20:42
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? They were thrilled to get the letter, then promptly forgot about it til the box arrived. When the box did arrive, it was a big hit.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? He loved the frozen egg game with the balloon, pipette and tiny monsters, and the stickers, but no, he's not still playing with them now.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? We did. He played with it happily that day, but not since.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? I wouldn't pay it and I think it is priced a little high.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? I think he really liked it but his interest didn't last long.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? Not likely.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved? I think it wasn't hugely interesting to my child after the initial surprise, but they're all different - I expect some children would adore this.
Kadena127 · 09/07/2017 21:05

My dd was one of the selected. I'm afraid however we haven't had a box arrive! ShockConfused

raspberryblush23 · 09/07/2017 22:33

My DS was quite excited about the 'egg hunt' and liked receiving his letter but found the language used a bit confusing. Again he liked receiving the box but both he and I found the activities confusing.

He liked the little moshling figure and it's currently sitting on his desk.

We did download the app but unfortunately my DS got bored of it quickly.

The prices mentioned are way too expensive for a few craft activities, some cards and an app.

My DS liked the idea of the box and the personalised aspect. However he found the activities too confusing and boring.

No I wouldn't consider buying the next two boxes, they would need to improve considerably.

To improve it needs: less papery, confusing activities and more toys, maybe a little chocolate bar.

Thanks for sending us the box.

Kittykatzen · 09/07/2017 23:20
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Read the letter as he was excited that it was addressed to him. His sister immediately dismantled the box and took out the toys.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The little creatures - they've been lost somewhere
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Had trouble downloading, but will try again.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Way too expensive for my son - he's not "into it" enough.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He liked it, and was pleased to have letters addressed to him.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not likely, sorry.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Price!
Lapinlapin · 10/07/2017 08:09

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

I was amazed by how excited my ds was by all this. I hadn't told him about it in advance, so when he received the letter he was really excited. He really bought into the whole idea. He kept re-reading the letter and talked about Buster Bumblechops. Every single day after school he'd ask if there was any post. He really couldn't wait to receive his box, so when it finally arrived he shrieked with joy! He then rushed to open it and empty the contents all over the floor!

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
Favourite item was probably the little figures, but no, I'm afraid he's no longer playing with them.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

Yes we did, but as the weather has been so good, he hasn't shown that much interest. Far keener to dive straight into the paddling pool the second he gets home! I think he might be more interested in the game in the winter when the weather's bad. He's very much an outdoor child, so in the summer computer games don't hold much attraction.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Really quite expensive for what they are. As others have pointed out, you get far more in a child's magazine for half the price. It's a lovely idea, and maybe nice as a present, but even so, I'd be disappointed if I spent £9.99 on it.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

I think he enjoyed the anticipation the most. Loved the personalised letters and the whole idea. He'd enjoyed the activities and did them all, but it was not quite what we were expecting. I have to say that he was expecting some kind of egg 'hunt' and that just wasn't the case.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

I'm not, as it's just too expensive. Initially my son was so excited, I thought I might have to continue, especially as the letter mentions 'your next box.' However, despite all the initial excitement, once the box actually arrived and he did all the activities, he hasn't mentioned it again, so I think I'm off the hook!

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
I think it needs to be cheaper and with more to do. He enjoyed the activities there were, but could do with a bit more. As a pp said, an overview of what's in the box would be good for parents.

Thanks for letting us test this.

isadorable · 10/07/2017 11:07

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
She was very excited by the fact that the letter was addressed to her.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
She loved the tiny plastic figures. She's still playing with two of them, one went down the sink.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
No.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think this is expensive.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
my daughter is 6, with poor concentration. She didn't really get deeply involved in the mystery box. She appreciated the personalisation.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
I think the instructions were not great and could be improved. it was not immediately clear what went with what.
Candyperfumegirl · 10/07/2017 15:01

A green letter arrived for my dc today from Moshi HQ (she's still at school so it's not been opened yet), so hopefully all those still waiting for theirs should be receiving one soon too :)

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

He seemed to quite enjoy receiving the letter and talked about what it said. His big brother (10) was more interested in the contents of the box and might have spent more time on it if it had been for him.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

None really as he got excited for about 5 minutes and then went back to his normal computer games.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
No, might still give it a try if it can be downloaded on a tablet rather than a parent's phone!
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

It seems expensive for what it is

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

He did enjoy the letter addressed to him.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Unlikely as he lost interest quickly.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

More things in the box, more thought about keeping kids engaged, a list of what is in the box as I think we lost the Moshi Monsters toys almost immediately, and I don't know what was there!
