Mind Candy asked us to recruit MNers with at least one DC aged 5-8 to test their new subscription service, containing fun Moshi-themed activities and games. The boxes work in conjunction with the Moshi Egg Hunt Mobile Game, which can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android. Selected testers were sent a letter from Moshlingologist Buster Bumblechops, enlisting their DCs to help in a quest to retrieve a special stolen egg. This was then followed up by the first in a series of Mystery Boxes, containing crafts and activities.

Here’s what Mind Candy have said about the product: ‘The experience begins when your DC receives an exciting personalised letter in the post, in which Buster Bumblechops explains that a very special Moshling egg has been stolen and that he’ll soon be sending a Moshi Mystery Box, jam-packed with clues, activities and missions. The first box contains fun art and craft activities, Moshi collectables, a comic strip, jokes and much more. And if you decide to sign up, there will be two more Moshi Mystery Boxes to follow.

A simple story runs across all three boxes, taking your child on a quest across Monstro City. Each box is also themed - box one is the Frostipop Glacier, two is Potion Ocean and three is all about the Gombala Gombala Jungle! The first box will also contain a pack of trading cards that can be scanned to unlock exclusive characters in the 100% free Moshi Monsters Egg Hunt Mobile Game!’

Testers - if you’ve been sent your mystery box, please leave your feedback on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw for a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Here are the questions Mind Candy would like you to answer:

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
- Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Thanks for taking part and good luck with the prize draw.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

We were very positively surprised when we received not one but two letters, one for each of our boys, I requested if the letter could have been addressed to both of them as they fit the testing requirements but was definitely not expecting both of them to get their own :)

Both boys read their own letters and were visibly buzzing.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

The little tasks were the favourite, especially the balloon/ice test. The little moshi is placed next their beds.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

We did, it was great fun but sadly didn't last very long, now after quite a few days neither has voluntarily opened the app anymore.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Too pricey for us, the boys attention spans aren't the greatest yet so unfortunately for us it would be a bit of a waste of money, maybe once they're a bit older but would prefer a bit cheaper box.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

Perfect distraction for a rainy day, something different for the kids to focus on. The idea is there definitely.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Sadly no, it's too expensive for our budget, especially knowing it won't keep the boys occupied for a very long time.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

More variety, perhaps cheaper subscription options with less activities and the possibility to choose the content of the box?

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? My daughter became very exciting, she was over the moon that she got a proper letter. - Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? The little monster figures as she loves role play and they are really lovely.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? Yes, my daughter plays with it a lot.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? I think it is affordable for a surprise box.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? She really enjoyed it, it was a great surprise.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? I would think about it, but maybe ask grandparents to buy it as they are always struggling with the best little surprise.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved? My daughter enjoyed the activity sheet, maybe the size of this could be doubled.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
The letter was a novelty. If a little too wordy.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The moshlings. No he isn't still playing with them.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
No. We don't use electronics that much and weren't going to start for this.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Way too pricey.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
If I'm honest he was a little underwhelmed after the initial excitement. He enjoyed the experiments with the ice and salt.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not at all.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Less in a pack, better price.
mandes1 · 02/07/2017 22:41
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Ripped it open! The first thing he went to was the cards and spread them out on the floor with his brother.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
His favourite thing was the cards and also the figures.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
I haven't downloaded the mobile game as yet. I have no space on my phone, but I will do this soon.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
£9.99 is a little pricey for what you get. However, as it is sent through the post, it makes it a little more special. I would probably consider it at a lower price, say, £5.99.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
I liked the personalisation. I think there could be a few more bits and bobs in there for the price. I also think that some of the things in the box were not self-explanatory to use (or that could be just me I suppose!)
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
I would not upgrade at the moment.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
The experience is good with a few more tweaks: lower price, more bits and bobs.

Thank you.

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
My son was very excited just receiving the letter. He loved that it was addressed to him and the moshi stamp on the envelope. He asked me every day when the box would arrive and when it finally did he was very excited again.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? He loved the scratch off cards and the moshi toy. We had to look it up on the internet as my son was so keen to hear all about it.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes but the initial download took 20 minutes. He absolutely loves the game, we have to set a time limit on it as he's addicted :/
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think it's a bit pricey, I might subscribe him if the boxes were a bit cheaper.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
My son really enjoyed this, he's very keen on moshi monsters now!
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Probably not but we might look into buying the cards (can you buy the cards separately?)
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
I was a bit sure what went where and what you did with all the bits in the box.
shoebedo434 · 02/07/2017 23:14

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
he was very excited. he showed his letter to everyone and kept asking when his box would arrive. when the box arrived, he was straight in there checking it out

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
his favourite item was the Gromlings, he still plays with them
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
no because the box arrived the day we went on holiday so he used it there and it would have been expensive to download from abroad
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think it's too expensive for what you get
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
he loved the personalisation. he liked most of the box. he wanted to make the items, play with the gromlings, he wasn't interested in the cards or the puzzles. I think he is abit young for some of it (he is 5)
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
no, I think he is too young and it wouldn't hold his attention long enough
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
I don't like my son to have too much screen time so wouldn't encourage him to play games on the phone. more craft items would be good
claireyjs · 03/07/2017 05:58

My DD is 7, she loved the personalisation of the letter and the box. She kept telling her ltitle sister that it was her special mission. She liked the little figures and loved making the frozen eggs and thawing them. We did download the app which she enjoyed initially but did get bored with after a while. Personally I think it is overpriced for what it is and wouldn't be able to afford to subscribe on a regular basis. Could be improved by being abless to personally one box for more than one child so siblings (especially twins) could share the experience as buying one each would cost a fortune!

1033MICHELLE · 03/07/2017 09:40

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
My son Ellis was very excited and wanted to open the box straightaway. He wanted to open all the packets first but I said we should read the letter.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
He loved the little figure and took it around with him for days but unfortunately it has been lost in the garden. Ellis was quite upset about this. - Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? Yes I downloaded the mobile game and Ellis liked this. He preferred this to the actual box really.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think these are a bit too high priced to be honest
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
It was very good it was personalised as Ellis really enjoyed receiving a letter and box. It was a novelty to him.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No I don't think so. Ellis didn't seem to bothered to finish the story over the next 2 boxes. He would have liked any additional figures but I wouldn't buy it just for them.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Not sure. I guess I would have thought it would be more like a treasure hunt.
giedre83 · 03/07/2017 10:55

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
He was very excited to receive the letter and was really looking forward to his box. It took a bit longer than expected to arrive and my dc nearly forgot about it.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
He loved the frozen 'egg' activity. He would keep doing it every single day :)
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
We did download an app. Unfortunately, it wasn't a big hit. My dc found it boring. He is 7 years old and loves games that are more involving. He does go to hatch his eggs every now and again but doesn't spend much time on his app. He has Moshi Monsters game for Nintendo 3ds and he loves that.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
A bit pricey for what is is. Maybe 14.99 for 2.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Personalisation is great. Cute small toys are also cute. It's a good box but nothing very different from other boxes on the market.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not likely.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
We found a box a bit confusing. Didn't know where to start. so maybe it could be divided in smaller marker envelopes (#1 #2) so we know where to start. Crafting items could be a bit more varied and a couple of items to be made rather than one.
MrsAlwaysRight · 03/07/2017 14:01
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
DD loved receiving the personalised letter. She read it out and thought it was funny. Personally I think it could of been shorter. She emptied out the box and looked through everything. The first thing she wanted to do was the frozen egg activity.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
She really liked the little figures and the frozen egg activity was her favourite. We have made these a few times as both her and her older sister enjoyed playing with the ice.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
We didn't as we feel she already spends quite a lot of time using her tablet so don't want to encourage her to spend even more time on it.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Personally I think they are too expensive and either the price should be reduced or there should be more in the box to make it feel like better value for money.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
DD was thrilled to receive the items in the post and enjoyed playing with the contents.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
My DD would have liked to have received the next two boxes but I didn't upgrade as felt it didn't provide value for money.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
It would have been better if the box had arrived more promptly after the initial letter. I think either the price should be reduced or there should be more stuff included as I felt it was overpriced. From my child's point of view she really liked it and was very positive about it.
katcraigen · 03/07/2017 16:15
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
My son (5.5) was really excited to receive the initial letter. But he ended up waiting so long for it, he lost momentum. When the box finally arrived he ripped it all open in excitement and... lost all interest! Some little activities that will keep him busy for a short while but really not enough to keep him enthralled for any length of time.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
We didn't download.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Personally for me to pay almost £10 a box, more variation needs to be included, depending on age range.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He loved the fact it arrived in the post with his name and the letter was aimed at him specifically. This made him feel very grown up.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Unlikely to be honest.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
More thought needs to go into the age these boxes are being aimed at. There's not an awful lot in the box my son received that would keep his interest for very long. It's a shame, the idea is great, execution could be much better.
SoftBlocks · 03/07/2017 16:46
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Very excited about the letter and the box arriving- asking if it had arrived every day etc.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The little plastic figures. They have joined all the other little plastic figures in a box and are no longer being played with.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? Ok.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Too expensive.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Loved the personalisation but not that excited by the box. Liked the activities but has done a lot of that sort of thing before.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not likely.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
More coherent story/ adventure. More toys.
Silverfoxxx · 03/07/2017 20:29

My ds was so excited when he received a letter addressed to him and could hardly wait for the box to arrive.

We liked how the box was decorated and the activities it contained. Great to get some moshi monsters, even more fun freezing them ( he requested to do this activity again). The egg painting craft was enjoyed but the card for the colouring was too shiny for felt tips.

He is still playing with the moshi monsters and the app.
I downloaded the game on my iPad but couldn't scan the cards ( tried lots of different settings, even reinstalled game) ds was disappointed but liked the cards anyway. Game is good fun, shame I can't scan.

I feel that £9.99 a box is too expensive esp as other craft subscription boxes are around £7.00 mark. I liked the look of getting the personalised book but also too expensive.

Liked the story but a mini magazine would be nice as it was too short.

My ds gave it a thumbs up as he loved getting toys, crafts and a new game - if the price was reduced I would consider subscribing.

Thank you for letting us try this product.

katiewalters · 03/07/2017 22:39
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
my son was excitwd when he got the lettwr and thought it was great it was adressed to him with his name on, and he couldnt wait to get the box, and when he got it he couldnt wait to do everything.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
My son liked the cards and little moshi characters, but you cant do anything with the little figures so hes not still playing with them
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes my son loves games like that so we downloaded it onto the ipad and it was a hit
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think theybare quite expensive for what they are
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Loved the personalisation and he.did enjoy the box
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No, if it was cheaper i would
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
More things to play with and a clear explanation of what you had to actually do
colleysmill · 03/07/2017 23:09

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

Excitedly ripped it open. Loved having it come through the post

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

In the box the moshi figures and the balloon activity - I've had to buy more balloons!

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Again loved it perhaps rather too much for my liking! This game was right up ds's street and he's always clambering to play it
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Hmmmm it's a bit steep compared to a magazine type subscription. Whilst the product was loved by ds the price point is quite high
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Really loved the personalisation and getting something through the post. Overall he's only got positive things to say about it
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Quite possibly although I think it is quite pricey. There would be no additional magazine type treats if I were to continue.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Definitely have a moshi figure in each box! The personalisation is great and all the activities held his attention (ds is 7) alot od the things he was pretty much able to do himself although we did do a lot of it together because I was being nosey. In the beginning i was looking for parental instructions though and it was mainly child led. I don't understand the game but ds twigged on really quickly 😂
d0gsbody · 04/07/2017 11:43

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
The letters arrived in Friday's post so I took them to school for them to read on the way home. DD1 (8yo) twigged quite quickly though that, rather than being a personal letter to her, it was an exact copy of the one to her sister (6yo). Maybe different letters for siblings or joint accounts with more stuff each box? Anyway the magic was somewhat diminished from then on.

Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
They both enjoyed the making crafts (the ice-filled balloon and the layered painting). There wasn't much else in the box that really engaged them.

Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
No, unfortunately their tablet is currently broken

These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
This seems very expensive for what you get. The crafts are similar in size and content (except for the Moshi element) to things you can pick up at the pound shop.

What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
As I mentioned above, some thought needs to be given to siblings and how to serve them (either give them different adventures or do larger joint boxes).

How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No. We did Toucan box for a while, which is a similar idea, for a while but they rapidly lost interest.

How do you think the experience could be improved?
More unique content in each box to add value. Otherwise it won't stand out from other competitors in the market. E.g. we switched from Toucan box to Aquila magazine which, as well as crafts, has stories, factual stuff, quizzes, competitions, etc. Much better value for money!

lindsieAnne · 04/07/2017 12:28

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

He was spoo excited about receiving it through the post. Kept asking if it was really his!!.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
Um ide say the little characters was his fav thing and yes still plays with them. Altho being spending an hourvfinding them after he list then... kids a lol.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
His sister already had the game so we were able to find it quite easy on the Android tablet he loved sitting with his sister using clues to find things and using codes to unlock things.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I do think at those prices no, altho he does want the other two boxes I think they are a bit pricey for what you get in it, possibly maybe 6.99 or both boxes for 11.99.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Absolutely bowled over with it all the fact his name was printed on the items it was just for him nobody else and took great pride in taking it to school to show others.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Altho my son wants to I think it's a bit pricey for what you get in it. Over all a wonderful idea tho.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
A change in the price possibly and more things to do or more characters to collect each time.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? Ignored the letter as they didn't understand it.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? No favourite item. I had no idea there was going to be flipping powder paint in there. Of course he opened the packet and it went all over our new rug. Cheers for that.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? No. I don't want him on apps
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price? Too expensive.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? Dismissive.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? Not likely
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Honestly, he mucked about with it for a bit and its been forgotten already.

My son was very excited with the initial letter he received and was ready to burst when the box actually arrived! We downloaded the app but he wasn't too interested in that but does really like the actual Moshi figures.

At 9.99 I don't think I would purchase the box but that's because he wasn't interested in the crafting part but I will definitely be buying more figures.

miluth · 04/07/2017 12:45

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
My daughter was so excited to get a letter addressed to her and asked everyday until the box arrived.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
She loved the little moshi characters and the traditional get cards
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
No, she wasn't interested in it
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Very expensive for what they are.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
She was more excited about the anticipation of the box arriving and having post addressed to her than what was actually in the box!
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No, I won't be upgrading
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
More organisation in the box needed as my daughter got everything out and then had no idea what everything was. The crafts were also very fiddly and involved for a child to do.
aharan · 04/07/2017 13:11
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
She was really excited when she saw the letter, especially because it had her name on it. She was looking forward to the box in the post. When the box did come through, the first thing she wanted to do was open it and take a look.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
Her favourite item was the egg activity. She started paying with it straightaway.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
No, we didnt download the mobile game. Will give it a try this week and update my response.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Slightly expensive to be honest. You can buy crafts like these for 2-3 pounds at Works or Wilko and the smaller toys are not that expensive either. I am not sure if I'd buy them.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Personalisation was great. But she spent a few hours with it and hasnt gone back to it after. She didnt find the various things novel or different enough.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No, I wouldnt upgrade.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Perhaps, more challenging activities and a kids club at the end of it.

What did your dc do first when they received their letter and their box?
He loved the fact they were both addressed to him and he ripped open the box when he received it.

Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
His favourite was the toys and the cards.

Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
My DD was super duper excited when she first received the letter (specifically as it was addressed to her, which she loved, as she felt all "grown up" like Mummy and Daddy to receive her own mail). She waited anxiously for the box, telling anyone who would bother to listen that it was due to arrive very soon.
Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
My DDs most favourite were the puzzles, but still playing with it??? Nope, sadly the excitement only lasted for a couple of days after the box was opened (as is usually the case with any new toy).
Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
I downloaded the mobile game, but my DD wasn't interested in it.
These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Very expensive!! I would most certainly not pay this price for this product, as all the items can be got at any store for less than half the price (albeit, seperately, of course).
What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
My DD loved the personalisation and all the excitement over the Mystery Box was great, but it didn't last all that long.
How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not likely at all, as my DD's interest had already died!
How do you think the experience could be improved?
Make it more cheaper maybe? Include more fun things in each box?
