Mind Candy asked us to recruit MNers with at least one DC aged 5-8 to test their new subscription service, containing fun Moshi-themed activities and games. The boxes work in conjunction with the Moshi Egg Hunt Mobile Game, which can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android. Selected testers were sent a letter from Moshlingologist Buster Bumblechops, enlisting their DCs to help in a quest to retrieve a special stolen egg. This was then followed up by the first in a series of Mystery Boxes, containing crafts and activities.

Here’s what Mind Candy have said about the product: ‘The experience begins when your DC receives an exciting personalised letter in the post, in which Buster Bumblechops explains that a very special Moshling egg has been stolen and that he’ll soon be sending a Moshi Mystery Box, jam-packed with clues, activities and missions. The first box contains fun art and craft activities, Moshi collectables, a comic strip, jokes and much more. And if you decide to sign up, there will be two more Moshi Mystery Boxes to follow.

A simple story runs across all three boxes, taking your child on a quest across Monstro City. Each box is also themed - box one is the Frostipop Glacier, two is Potion Ocean and three is all about the Gombala Gombala Jungle! The first box will also contain a pack of trading cards that can be scanned to unlock exclusive characters in the 100% free Moshi Monsters Egg Hunt Mobile Game!’

Testers - if you’ve been sent your mystery box, please leave your feedback on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw for a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Here are the questions Mind Candy would like you to answer:

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
- Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Thanks for taking part and good luck with the prize draw.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
He was excited about the letter. He'd all but forgotten about it by the time the box arrived as it took so long
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
He liked the mini moshlings and balloons
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

To be honest I forgot 😳 Will download Sunday (it's his birthday tomorrow) and report back

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Expensive
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He liked it. He did tell a lot of people all about it
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
I don't think I would at that price. It just seems such a lot for some colouring bits and balloons. Even the moshlings could be bought cheaper
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Mainly the price, closely followed by organisation. Everything was really delayed and that would put me off signing up
DoubleR · 23/06/2017 23:20

Thanks for choosing us, DD has really enjoyed being part of this test.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
DD was very excited to receive post addressed to her, she loved the letter and read it every day until the box arrived.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The little moshling and the scratch cards, yes she's still playing with them
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes, DD loves it and rushes home from school every day to hatch the next moshling
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
That's quite a lot for what is in the box
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
She loved it
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Probably not at that price
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
The activities are a bit random, it would be better if they tied in with the box theme a bit more

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
He was excited about getting a letter personalised to him and kept talking about finding eggs.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The balloons to make ice eggs. We dont have them anymore but will get more balloons
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Unfortunately couldn't get it to download on his Amazon kindle fire but it is on my phone(not ideal)
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Too expensive, the bos was nice but not that nice
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
Loved the personalisation but too wordy for a 5 year old.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Not likely
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Cheaper, more bits to play with, less reading and print

Thanks for taking part and good luck with the prize draw.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
DS is 6 and found the letter a bit too long and wordy I think, he loved getting post addressed to him though. The box was met with excitement and was hastily opened (and scattered over the room...)
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
He liked the 'experiments' the best and the did hold his attention. The moshlings have been added to his shelf so while not played with they are 'special'
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
We did download the game, he liked it but I think he found some bits frustrating (maybe aimed at slightly older children?) but he does like hatching eggs and looking after the moshlinhs. I found it a bit confusing to navigate when helping him, but it kept him occupied for hours!
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think they're over priced, there are other box/magazine subscriptions DS would get more value from and they're cheaper.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He loved the personalisation but the novelty of the box wore off quickly.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
We won't be, far too expensive.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
A bit more explaination about the cards/codes/app for parents. Cut down on the 'tat' as my OH called it. Add another experiment/craft and take out the loose pages of colouring sheets. The cards are a bit tricky as while they're a key part of moshi monsters, they're banned at school so just get scattered around the house rather than swapped and traded.
katyk81 · 24/06/2017 08:06

My daughter was so excited to get a letter addressed to herself- it was a complete surprise and she took herself off into the corner and struggled her way through reading it all to herself-her face was a picture, she was enthralled by the whole idea. We then had a bit of a wait where she came home every day desperate to know if anything else had arrived and when the package did she was so excited she was shaking.

Her favourite parts were the little toys for the ice craft but she liked the cards too because her brother is a 'collector' and she enjoyed having a collection of her own!

We didn't download the game because my phone is completely full but we will do once I get my act together!

Sadly I think they are too pricey for what you are getting when you consider comparative products- ideally with what you are getting these would be priced around the £5.99 mark but I appreciate this may not be viable when you consider postage-so I would suggest another paper activity or a slightly larger more collectable little toy with a price point of around £7.99 which is inline with other products of a similar nature my elder son has tested.

My daughter loved the experience and the personalisation but to be honest I think it was the novelty factor that she enjoyed so much, she loved the idea of a mission too.

I don't intend to continue at this stage due to the cost being prohibitive for the amount of time she spent on it, at 5 her attention span is still a little short for this kind of thing when paying so much- I would be more likely to spend it on a magazine which she will come back to time and time again and not spread the parts around or use for different purposes!

I would say if the price could be tweaked and maybe the toy a little more interesting these will be good sets as the kids would take the toy to school and look to do trades etc which gets everyone interested. I also think there should be no more than three to four days between a letter and parcel because a 5 much more than that is a lifetime! I did find the letter a bit wordy and my daughter struggled with understanding so many made up words- a few are fine but many more it takes away from the actual meaning.

Thanks for letting us be involved, she really did enjoy the experience even if it isn't quite right for us at this stage.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box? He grabbed the little figure and was delighted with it
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it? The little figure was his favourite and yes he is still playing with it
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? Yes. He liked it
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. I'm sorry but I find this too pricy
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation? He liked that it was addressed to him but I feel he was a little too young at just 5 to really understand it
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series? Not likely
  • How do you think the experience could be improved? More toys

shortbreadsharon · 24/06/2017 11:35

My DD was thrilled at getting mail & box she read the letter and was quite impatient waiting on the box to arrive.

She loved the moshlings

We downloaded it and she played it for an hour tops.

I think it's far too expensive for what's in it it. She had the full box done in an hour then another hour on an app. It's not really value for money.

My daughter said what's the point of this and put the moshling and cards in a drawer so definitely wouldn't consider.

I think if they could come up with an app like Pokemon go but mishi monsters my daughter would like it. I think for the craft they have to think of something that's not easily completed something challenging.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
He was super excited and loved having it addressed to him.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
He loved the cards.
  • Did you download
the mobile game? How did they find it? Yes, we downloaded the game. He likes it. It's quite similar to the original moshi monsters online game that he used to play.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Way too expensive for what you get. You got better value for money with the Moshi Monsters magazine. I would not pay that much for it.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He really liked it, but his interest is already waning.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No, it's too expensive.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Cheaper and more activities.

- What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

She tried to read the whole letter herself, and was so excited that Buster Bumblechops had written to her (she has been reading the Ladybird Moshi Monsters books so the characters are familiar to her).

- Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

By far and away the trading cards and app tie in. We have "metered" the scratch cards to one every time she has done some reading, followed by 15 minutes playing on the app - it has been a real motivator. Depending on price point, we would definitely look to get some more cards when the supplied ones are all spent.

- Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

She loves it. She's only 5, so some of the games were a bit tricky for her (mental maths, her reactions weren't quite fast enough for the Whack-a-Glump) etc. but she adored hatching the egg each day and buying food from the shop. As an adult I liked how there was no pressure (or even possibility) of spending real money on the game to hatch eggs etc.

- These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Too expensive.

- What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

She loved it but didn't play with the contents as much as I thought she would. We did the balloon activity (although it said "add a few Moshlings to each balloon" but we got three balloons and only two Moshlings so were only able to put one Moshling in each balloon. Also they took a lot longer than three hours to freeze).

She hasn't requested to do any of the other activities yet, other than the scratch cards and the app.

Even as an adult, I couldn't work out where you were "supposed" to start with the activities to solve the clues. The overarching plot passed us both by, I'm afraid.

- How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Not very likely, but we will likely play with the app for a few weeks, and/or buy some additional cards.

- How do you think the experience could be improved?

A clear list of what order the activities need to be completed to solve the clues.

Not happy about the price and think it's a bit steep Although saying that there's quite alot in there todo but not worth the cost Should be a cheaper to be fair

She's over the moon and had everything out from colouring the egg to giving it yellow spots Also froze the moshies a few times now.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

Probably not but she is carrying on playing with the game App and she to a few friends who like it.

Just make the subscription either cheaper or fill that box more

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
He was so exited, he didn't expect that :D
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
with the 3d figure
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes i did, it is fine but Jamie started to be a bit bored after a bit
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
To be honest it is a bit overprice, both the price
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
He was so happy to open the box and to find what inside. He would to do the painting and he likes the map on. he was very happy.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
I don't think so, it is a bit overprice like I said before, it is quite easy to make a little box with something by myself at this point.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
I think it was a really nice experience, maybe you can put something more durable in the box, after a while Jamie started to be not more interested, his enthusiasm for the new thing was only for an hour, after he forgot about the box.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Really excited about the letter! Felt really special. She was surprised at the box as it wasn't what she was expecting. It was more of a folder than a box so she kept asking when the box was going to arrive. She also expected some type of 'egg' in the box not a picture of an egg.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
She loved the water balloon egg idea!
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Ye's. She enjoyed it when we first downloaded the app but hasn't ask to go back on it
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Really expensive for what it is
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

She loved it, just a shame it was addressed to Jack (rather than her real name).

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

She really liked the little moshi monsters and the cards.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

My daughter didn't, but her elder brothers did (and are still playing it now).

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

WAY overpriced. The total value of goods must be about £1-£2!

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

It's very attractive and appealing - they loved it. As I say, the personalisation wasn't relevant as it was the wrong child's name, but if this was right I'm sure it would go down well.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

No chance at all. Way, way too much money.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

Get the name right on the box, make the whole thing cheaper.

ShakespeareanQuotations · 24/06/2017 16:58

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
The letter was opened with great excitement and shown to everybody that came to visit for the next couple of days. When the box arrived I was feeding baby DD so DS opened it with his older sister and they immediately filled the balloon and put it in the freezer.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The cards are the favourite item. They're used for guessing games and just to look through, repeatedly. - Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it? We haven't downloaded the game yet because DS's iPad is low on memory and he doesn't want to delete anything to make space for it yet.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
I think the price is crazy! I've subscribed to a lot of different boxes and this one is the worst for value.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
DS enjoyed receiving the box and seeing his name in print. He liked the build up from receiving the letter and enjoyed the activities.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
I will not upgrade to a paid subscription at this price. If it was £5/box we would have continued but £9-10 for one box is way too much.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Lower the price! I'm not sure how much more added value it would appear to have if we downloaded the app, but I don't really want my son to have another reason to use his iPad. I prefer the activities.
puddlecat · 24/06/2017 17:41
  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
My son was very excited to receive the letter. He then looked forward each day in anticipation of receiving the box. He kept saying he would be going on a detective hunt to find the moshi monsters. He asked every day when I picked him up after work if his special box had come yet.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The little moshlings.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes, he played it a lot when first got it but has gone back to his other apps now.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Way too expensive.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
My son enjoyed receiving the personalised letter and box. He liked all the different things in the box and enjoyed the frozen balloon activity. He felt special having something his sister didn't!
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
No chance, way too expensive.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
My son was so excited to receive the box he opened it really quickly and lots of different things fell out. It was difficult to figure out what activity was what and it felt a bit chaotic. Would be better if the activities were separated into bags or something. Also, the price. If the boxes were £3 or £4 pounds I would consider subscribing.

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

My daughter and I read the letter together, and she was very excited to receive her box which came about a week or so later. We then read through the box together and she was eager to get started!

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

My daughter loved the box, especially the Moshi's and she plays with them daily.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

We haven't downloaded the game yet but we are going to.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

I thought the price was a little steep, mainly because I have more than one child and would end up having to buy two of each of the boxes!

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

My daughter loved the box and thought it was amazing that the letter was written to her. She is convinced that the box is specifically for her!

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

I am still deciding, as I do feel that they are a little overpriced. However, she did love the box hence my hesitation in not saying no outright.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

The box needs to arrive sooner after the letter. I thought the contents was fab but that they need to look at the price to make it more appealing to parents with several children around the same age, as my children certainly would not share the box!

Thank you for selecting us for this trial. My daughter really did love the box!

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

My sons were extremely excited and ripped the boxes to pieces. And everything was everywhere, so it was hard to know where to start.

Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

The little figures and cards and yes they still play with the figures.

Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

Yes they initially enjoyed the game but the novelty has worn off now. They haven't continued to go back to playing unlike their other games.

These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Over priced for what you get. These activities are basic and could easily be put together for a lot less.

What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

They loved it. But I found the instructions and letter graphic design were too busy not plain and simple for a child. They simply skipped the reading part and figured the activities themselves.

How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?*

Not likely.

How do you think the experience could be improved?

Simpler text and graphics. Clear instructions and at a more competitive price.

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

Sat and read it with me and then read it again several times and put it up somewhere special. Was very excited to have a letter addressed to her.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The moshi monsters and yes.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
Yes. Good. I was worried it would be trying to make us pay for stuff all the time but seems OK so far.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
A bit pricey. Only kept her occupied for half an hour and the craft stuff was mostly things we already had. This is a bit much for the moshis and cards.
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
She loved it and is very excited. Can't wait to get the next box.
  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
Still not sure. Will see what the other two boxes are like. Might finish the set of 5 but unlikely to continue after that because of the price.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Still haven't get second box. They need to be more regular.

We have three DS, aged 7, nearly 5 and just turned 3. My answers below refer to the 7yo and 5yo. 3yo not interested in the slightest, so I would suggest that the concept is a bit too advanced for his age group.

  • What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?
Ours were really excited. Like others, they loved having post addressed to them. We don't know Moshi Monsters too well here so they were interested in finding out who the characters were and spent some time guessing what would be in the coming parcel.
  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?
The little moshlings - they are still being played with.
  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?
No. They expressed vague interest in downloading it, but couldn't do it straightaway when they got their boxes as our post arrived not long before we had to be somewhere (and I failed to intercept!). After they completed the activities in the box, they moved on pretty quickly so we still haven't downloaded it. Still might though.
  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?
Waaaay too expensive. I might pay £6 for it, if they really loved Moshi Monsters, but magazine with toys and activities sell for £5, so you're really paying an extra £4/£5 just to have it delivered with your kid's name printed on it in a few spaces!
  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?
They enjoyed the anticipation of getting the boxes in the post. There isn't THAT much personalisation, but they liked what was there.

Personally, I liked the fact that the activities were simple and the box had everything in it that you needed to complete the tasks. No ferreting about looking for glue or having to scoff three yoghurts just for the empty pots.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?
If it were cheaper I would've been likely to do it just for the sake of completion but not a chance at £9.99 for a box.
  • How do you think the experience could be improved?
Perhaps an email to the parent before the boxes arrived with a "here's what to look out for in the box". Children get very excited and there were bits flying everywhere when ours opened their boxes: it would've been handy to know what should have been in there and how it all slotted together!

What did your DC do first when they received their letter and their box?

She was really excited to receive post just for herself, that was great in itself. The letter was read out to her (she is 5 and in reception), and she couldn't wait for the box to arrive. She kept asking when it was coming, and around a week later, it did. She was so excited again to receive the box and she wanted to go through it all right away.

  • Which was their favourite item from the box and are they still playing with it?

Her favourite was the small ones that went into the balloons to be frozen. She really enjoyed that activity.

  • Did you download the mobile game? How did they find it?

Not yet but we plan to.

  • These will be priced at £9.99 per box, or a bundle of two boxes at £17.99. What are your thoughts on the price?

Seems expensive for what it is and I'm not sure I would pay that much if we hadn't had a trial.

  • What did your DC think of the overall Mystery Box experience and personalisation?

She did enjoy having post addressed to her but there wasn't really much personalisation. Overall, she found it exciting, and enjoyable.

  • How likely are you to upgrade to a paid subscription, so that your DC can continue with the next two boxes in the series?

She is very keen to, but I think it's too expensive for what it is.

  • How do you think the experience could be improved?

The cost mostly.
