Birds Eye have teamed up with Mumsnet, to find 250 testers for their 20-minute meals. Selected testers were given a Birds Eye pack with a £5 Birds Eye voucher and a £10 supermarket voucher, so that they could cook and taste the 20-minute meals for themselves.

Here’s what Birds Eye have said: ‘Tea time can be a stressful part of the day and coming up with nutritious and tasty meals the kids will enjoy is not easy.

That’s why Birds Eye has teamed up with Toby and Roo, Honest Mum, Not Another Mummy Blog and London Dad to create a series of delicious and wholesome meals for the family to enjoy. And guess what, they genuinely only take 20-minutes to prep, cook and serve!

Birds Eye frozen chicken is always made with 100% chicken breast, barn-reared chickens, and no artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.’

Cages are ONLY used for laying hens not meat chickens

Q4 is a deliberate deceitful attempt to make a minimal industry standard seem like a good welfare option.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
yes, it was pretty good. I was skeptical as I am strictly an organic corn-fed chicken type of person and thought these would be dry and fake tasty - but they were much better than I thought. The children, of course, loved them. I really really loved the Chicken Katsu recipe - have been wanting to make that since I was in Tokyo years ago and it worked pretty well and was so quick. The breaded chicken worked excellently. Chicken Chargrills were pretty good too. Breast is often best - unless you can have a drumstick!
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
It is pretty good value - if you factor in the ease of using it, quick cooking time and so on. And the fact that it actually all gets eaten up by the children.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes, am on a protein kick at the moment - and hate additives. It does make me feel more friendly towards them.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
yes, hate caging hens. Always buy Free Range eggs. Hope these have good lives before slaughter. I suppose the idea is to change perceptions about ready meal style food. You claim you can trace the chicken back to the barn it comes from - well that is reassuring.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
yes, for a quick midweek meal - for a meal with friends from school, who might turn their noses up at our usual rather experimental cooking. Very tasty. and I did like the 20 minute recipe ideas.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
I loved the taste of Birds Eye chicken, in particular the chicken dippers which are a firm favourite with the kids, they complain no end if they aren't Birds Eye dippers.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
I think on the whole their chicken is good value but I generally stock up when there is an offer. Birds Eye when not on promotion are more expensive than their competitors or the supermarket own brand but if you shop around there is nearly always a deal to be found.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
This is very important to me, i'm still traumatised by Jamie Oliver showing us what was in a turkey twizzler! after seeing that horror show i've been carefully checking content labels. I love how Birds Eye products are clearly labelled and tell you they're 100% chicken breast.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
I didn't know this about Birds Eye chickens, I naively hadn't given it much thought but am delighted to learn this as I do know that this affects the quality of the meat.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
I loved the recipe cards and I most definitely will be feeding Birds Eye chicken to my family again. Their Fish fingers, burgers and frozen potato products are equally delicious and ridiculously easy to prepare quickly for the whole family.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
If I'm honest no we didnt. We tried the char grilled chicken, didnt like texture
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
If you liked it then yes. For me no as we didnt finish it
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
No, I think it tastes like its been emulsifed in a drum. We had a butchers shop and no way does chicken have that consistency
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
No. I tried the greek chicken pitta recipe. The image of completed dish looked like the chicken in pitta bread with the greek salad on the side. The method was different, I followed the recipe to the tee and it added the salad and oil and red wine vinegar to the chicken in the pitta resulting in oil dripping down our hands. My granddaughter aged 3 would even try it :( Im sorry to give a negative review, the first time ever but feel i have to be honest
thismeansnothing · 25/05/2017 22:29

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Not really.
The chicken nuggets were bland but eatable.
The crispy chicken was fine. Nothing to write home about.
The chargrills were absolutely aweful. It may be 100% chicken breast meat but the texture was disgusting. I cooked as per instructions and they came out a bubbling (who knew chicken bubbled?!) slimey, sloppy mess. Complete with char lines (how?!) and have an odd artificial smokey char taste.

2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Compared to own brand products then no. As with anything your paying for a name. There again in the big supermarkets one part of a Birdseye range is on offer. As with anything I'd read the nutritional info and see what had the highest chicken content, lowest fat and sugar content and make a decision taking price into consideration.

3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
I'm undecided. I shop at Aldi so that's a big factor as they don't stock them 😂 but if they happened to have them in the freezer I'd want to make a like for like comparison with a store brand. Yes it may be 100% breast meat but I'd also want the one that had the highest chicken content and lowest fat per 100g. If that was Birdseye then yes, but I wouldn't get the chargrills. No way. A chicken breast with some seasoning on nutritionally would be a better choice and would actually come out resembling a chicken breast and be eatable!

4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
TBH it's not something I've ever considered when buying any brand chicken product.

5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Probably not. I wouldn't go out of my way for them. I'd probs save my money and get an own brand to have in the freezer for emergency teas otherwise I think a chicken breast is just as quick and easy and has more nutritional value.

  1. YEs my kids all eat it with no complaints, my oldest loved it

Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

When on offers yes I do

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

I think the packed with protein line is a bit odd as it implies that's something special about birds eye chicken whereas I know all chicken has protein.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes I love that

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes defintely

MrsSpa · 26/05/2017 20:42
  1. It was ok (chicken dippers) . Kids loved them. Normally I would prefer plain chicken that we season at home but this is fine foe a quick meal.
  2. Not sure, I haven't checked all the prices. But I got 3 packs for a little over the £5 voucher so that was more than I was expecting.
  3. I'm very dubious about this claim as there is a batter coating so not 100% chicken... Also
I don't mind eating other bits of the chicken.
  1. Good.
  2. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it but also would consider it if I wanted a quick easy tea.
Debsie123 · 26/05/2017 22:33

Thank you for the great 20 minute ideas. They made a fantastic change to our normal dinners and were really tasty. The other great thing about them as I could adapt them for individual tastes without too much hassle.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes, all the family really enjoyed the crisp coating and the tasty chicken. We used dippers and crispy chicken and pre-schooler, teen and adults enjoyed them equally.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

To a certain degree yes because it does taste better than cheaper versions in my opinion however it can be a little expensive when on a tighter budget.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes because I like to be able to feed my children quality food and knowing that it is 100% chicken breast gives me the reassurance that they are eating a quality product.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

I have to be honest and say it isn't something I think about very often but I think it's good that the chickens are raised ethically.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

100% yes and I'm looking forward to trying the other 20 minute recipes in the near future.

I am very happy with the taste of birds eye chicken products. Our family always buy birds eye products and chicken dippers specially. I think the taste is great and I was not aware about the fact that there is no addictive or preservatives, and there is protein in them. Now after knowing it we love it even more. I am definitelly recommending the chicken to all my friends. It is super easy and super fast to prepare- which is big bonus in our busy lives. I didn't know about the non-cage policy of birds eye. This is not very important to me when I m buying but definitely good thing and maybe many customers are taking in into consideration when choosing the brand. Overall very happy, very good price, affordable price I think, great taste, good size of packs. Excellent!

anne262 · 27/05/2017 11:57
  1. Yes it was surprisingly good. The whole family enjoyed it.
  2. Very good value for a midweek family meal. The recipes received showed how versatile the products actually are.
  3. Knowing the meat is 100% chicken breast certainly makes it a definite purchase over other brands.
  4. Yes , this is good to know.
  5. Yes definitely , there is a good range available and so I shall be adding some to my shopping list .
Gcalgske · 27/05/2017 14:21
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes! Great for a quick meal.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes, I think the price is ok.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in the future?
I like that there are no fillers etc .
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Would prefer free range but adequate for the price point.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes, we try not to eat too much packaged or ready made food but I really liked the recipe ideas. Especially the katsu, I made a thick katsu sauce from carrots and butternut squash so this was a great way to compromise and get lots of veggies and protein into the family.
LobsterMac · 27/05/2017 19:27
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

We really did. My fussy DD (13) is definitely not a meat eater, but she loved these. We had the chargrilled chicken with the Greek salad but we had them in wraps rather than pita.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Yes, it's ok. Portions are small for adults though - I think adults probably need two.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Definitely. I like knowing there are no beaks and claws in there!

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

No. Not at all. Barn-rearing sounds idyllic but it's only a tiny step up from caging. I'd much prefer you use free range hens.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes. Very quick, tasty mid-week meals.

Thank you for choosing us as testers.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

My family loved the taste (I'm vegetarian so dont know). My six year old is a reluctant meat eater but loved the chicken dippers.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

The products I bought were on offer so they were good value and we seemed to get a lot for £5.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, definitely. This was a big selling point for me. Its reassuring to know they are good quality with no additives or preservatives

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes, its a positive - free range would be even better!

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes. We enjoyed trying the recipes from the bloggers with the Taco boats being the most popular and one we will try again.

pogostick · 28/05/2017 13:29
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes I did, as did my partner and my 13 year old child - who got involved with the planning and cooking of the Chicken Taco Boats. I much preferred the chicken dippers and the crispy chicken to the chicken chargrills but I am not a cover of barbecue flavour.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes I do - I shopped around and there were quite a few very good offers at different supermarkets - ended up buying the chicken dippers from Tesco and the chicken chargrills from Saisbury's.
  1. Does knowing the Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it is packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in the future?
Yes it does - I rarely buy ready meals so was unaware of the product charecteristics.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged measure you about the produce?
I would rather they were free range but barn-reared is much better than battery -when shopping with my child she will always steer me towards foods that consider animal welfare.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes I would now that I know more about it and the cost and taste. Our favourite meal from the selection was the Tasty Taco Boats - we also enjoyed the chicken Pittas but I thought that there was no need to include the feta cheese, we enjoyed the chicken burgers but did not attempt the Katsu Don - unsure where we would find Dashi, mirin and edamame in our Northern quarter. I was also a bit worried about trying the menus as I am following the Slimming World diet, but it was fine - the chicken dippers are only 1.5 sync each. Thank you for the opportunity to try something different.
Redyoyo · 28/05/2017 16:02
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken? My youngest usually eats chicken dippers but I have problems getting my 7 year old to eat processed food.
Both of them thoroughly enjoyed the chicken taco boats with the eldest actually eating the chicken dippers. This has opened my eyes to using birds eye products in recipes instead of serving as a quick meal with chips and beans.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value? Yes I think it is good value, obviously a bit more expensive than supermarket own brand but better quality.
  2. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future? I would already buy them but knowing this makes me feel less guilty about serving these to my kids.
  3. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product? Yes in the same way as above.
  4. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again? Yes but in more inventive ways and not just out the oven as a quick fix.

yes, well cared for chickens is important to me
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
yes, very tasty and good value, lots of options and easy to make

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes - we loved it- tasted much better than expected and top tip is to use a food thermometer so as not to overcook.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes - although offers always help.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Absolutely - in my ignorance I had assumed frozen chicken equated to processed rubbish.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
not a big factor for me.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Definitely - although never chicken dippers as they are too associated with toddlers! char grilled or noticed a south west range that would definitely appeal to kids 8+
CecilyValentine · 29/05/2017 08:10
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes, we tried all of the suggested meals and enjoyed every one.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value? Yes, especially when the dippers are on offer.
  2. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product? Yes it does but free range would be much better.
  2. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again? Yes, definitely but I think the dippers would be good in a southern fried flavour for older children.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Honestly I wouldn't normally seek out free range stuff as it's normally so much more expensive but knowing these products are from free range chickens and are a good price is really good.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Definitely! We tried all 4 of the recipes we were provided with and my kids loved all of them except the Katsu one - but we will be doing the other ones again in the future. It's nice to have quick easy meals that are good for the family as well.
