Birds Eye have teamed up with Mumsnet, to find 250 testers for their 20-minute meals. Selected testers were given a Birds Eye pack with a £5 Birds Eye voucher and a £10 supermarket voucher, so that they could cook and taste the 20-minute meals for themselves.

Here’s what Birds Eye have said: ‘Tea time can be a stressful part of the day and coming up with nutritious and tasty meals the kids will enjoy is not easy.

That’s why Birds Eye has teamed up with Toby and Roo, Honest Mum, Not Another Mummy Blog and London Dad to create a series of delicious and wholesome meals for the family to enjoy. And guess what, they genuinely only take 20-minutes to prep, cook and serve!

Birds Eye frozen chicken is always made with 100% chicken breast, barn-reared chickens, and no artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.’

'Enjoyed Birds Eye Chicken? Why not leave us a product review here.'

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes. We had only ever tried the chicken nuggets and we tried the chicken dippers and chicken burgers, which the whole family enjoyed.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes i do think it is good value. And I shop in sainsburys and the birds eye frozen products are on offer every now and again which is even better.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes that makes me more likely to buy it, as you dont necessarily think that of a frozen product. I woyld associate those things more with fresh chicken, so its a bonus.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes it does reassure me about the product. Makes me think it will taste better, be bettet quality and that birds eye are a good brand.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Definately yes. I save money buying frozen chicken, i get more and it lasts longer as its frozen, dont have to use it within so many days once open etc

Yes, I like too know exactly what I am eating without hidden extras.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Added bonus.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes! Especially with the recipes given, spices a few meals up.

  3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future? It's really important to know exactly what my children are eating so it will be something i will buy occasionally
  4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product? I would prefer free range ,I think barn reared is still a bit like prison.
  5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again? It will be used only occasionally as I really think it should be free range

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes, I love the chicken dippers, could eat hundreds of them. I quite liked the chicken charcoal grills but DH didn't. We buy a lot of fresh chicken and they don't compare but the frozen chicken is less 'watery' than when I used to buy it years ago.
2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Not bad, good when on offer. £1.50 for 2 small chicken chargrills is ok but it's £4 for fresh chicken breast which we get 2 meals out of for three of us.

3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes it will actually and I will keep my eye out for offers now.

4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Sorry to say, but it doesn't really bother me either way.

5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes I would. We made the Taco boats and the pitta pockets with salad and it was a quick and easy meal that I'm happy to replicate frequently.

1.Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
This was our first try of Birds Eye chicken and we really enjoyed the the chicken chargrills and crispy chicken. Packed with flavor and tasted as chicken should.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I found several packs on offer which was lucky. I think that some items were better value for money than others. EG, can you buy fresh chicken breast and glaze/coating sometimes cheaper. But what you need to factor in is the time frozen chicken saves you, it was really easy to pop them in the oven with no other prep, or worries about use by dates or defrosting fresh chicken correctly. So with this in mind, great value for money.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, I had wrongly presumed that they were not a healthy food choice for the family. I would be more likely to purchase particularly products with the knowledge that they were relatively healthy and 100% chicken breast.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

It offers me a little reassurance, however one of the main reasons I would not have brought this product before was due to the fact I generally only buy free range chicken. Spending your life in a barn is much better than a cage, but a field would be preferable. I would pay the extra for a free range option - as would a lot of parents.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

The girls really enjoyed their meals, they have put the pitta and salad meal on their top five list - so I am going to keep a packet of the crispy chicken and char grills in the freezer for easy and fuss free meals.

Klh88 · 22/05/2017 11:10
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes, it was tasty and a nice texture. The coating went crispy in the oven and wasn't at all soggy. I did think they tasted overly salty though.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
The products were cheap compared to fresh chicken but I wouldn't necessarily say they were good value as the quality and nutrition are poorer.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
That is a positive to me but only 50% of a chicken dipper is chicken. I'm surprised that the recipes didn't have a traffic light nutrition guide on as they have apparently been approved by nutritionists. I would be interested to know the salt content of each recipe.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Again while this is obviously a positive, I would always buy free range chicken and eggs so would hope birds eye are working towards using free range meat in the future.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
If there was little else available I would. I wouldn't make them a regular part of our diet though.

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
We really enjoyed it! I loved the Chargrill chicken, my daughter loved the chicken dippers and my partner loved the crispy chicken. We managed to do a few meals as there were a few offers on Birds Eye chicken products too! My daughter loves 'I can cook' on Cbeebies and this allowed us to involve her in cooking too (even when we're a little strapped for time after school/work)

2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Excellent value! Good amount of chicken and good quality. I have to admit that I preferred the chargrill chicken selections.

3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Definitely. In my eyes it makes it a more 'family friendly' meal. In all honesty, I can eat some rubbish every now and then but I have always been particular about what I feed the family. I will be more likely to purchase this compared to others now.

4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
It does make me feel more favourable to the product. However, in previous cases other companies have claimed this and it has not really been the case. I am always a little dubious but will give companies the benefit of the doubt in most cases.

5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Definitely! My daughter can be a picky eater and it is quick to prepare and can be included in a lot of fast and delicious recipes. My partner has recently started eating meat again so this was also a create way to explore new recipes. I have really enjoyed doing the '20 minute meals' challenge :)

I forgot to take a picture of every meal we cooked...every...single...time lol

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes, I do purchase some chicken from their range anyway as my teenagers like it.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
It can usually be found on offer so yes I believe it is.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
That's good to know. Free range would be better still.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes. We enjoyed looking at the recipe book but did our own version of honestmums pittas. Your recipe had one chicken chargrill shared between 2 pittas!!! We made extra chicken and they were very nice. Other ingredients in the recipe were odd too - far too much oil and vinegar listed for a salad dressing.

Thanks again😃 Mumsnet and Birds Eye.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken? I don't eat meat but my children did!

Yes I will certainly purchase more, it's one less thing for me to worry about knowing it's 100% chicken and no added extras
  4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product? Yes it does, it shows Birds Eye care too
  5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again? I certainly will be, I often make everyone something different, but everyone loved these, I like how all the products cook about the same time so it's handy that they can all cook together at the same time

We enjoyed doing this as a family, we were quite surprised at how delicious the recipe we chose was and we have had it again

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

I'm one of 2 vegetarians in or house so didn't partake myself. I was keen to product test it as something easy to serve the 3 carnivores. We chose to make the Greek chicken pittas, with me and ds1 having falafel with our Greek salad instead of the chargrilled chicken. Dh, dd and ds2 thought it tasted good.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Yes, it was on offer and I seemed to get quite a lot for my £5. With it being frozen I think it's one of those foods you could buy in bulk when it is on offer making it even more affordable.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, it seems to have reasonably good credentials.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

I would expect that as a minimum to be honest.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes, I would. It was good to be able to serve up chicken without the hassle and leftovers that I, being vegetarian, wouldn't eat. It seems quite an economical way of serving up meat to the 3 in the family that eat it.

Thanks for choosing us to do the product test. It was definitely appreciated, especially having the Tesco voucher to buy the ingredients.

100% meat would be fine. Please lets not technical about what constitutes as meat.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Somewhat
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Potentially for easy friend visiting tea occasionally

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes. It was very tasty.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I was very surprise for how cheap it was!

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, I would buy it in the future. But only as a treat. It might be 100% breast meat but it is not chicken breast texture.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Clearly a positive, but not something I would normally consider when buying meat for my child.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes, absolutely.

librarypictures · 22/05/2017 20:32

We enjoyed the taste of the Birds Eye Chicken - quite plain but good as a base for the recipes.
Yes definitely good value - can often be found on offer somewhere.
Reassuring that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
It does, but as with eggs, I'd be more reassured if they were free range.

Absolutely! Smile thank you for including us in the product test.
ninjaturtlesmum · 22/05/2017 22:18

Thanks Mumsnet and Birds Eye for choosing me for this product test, I really enjoyed it.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

I did actually enjoy the taste and i wasn't sure that I would. I bought the chargrilled chicken and made the Greek salad recipe. Mixed reaction from my children, my eldest and youngest loved it, my middle one was not so sure. Both me and my husband thought it was really tasty.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I do but I think I bought it when it was on offer. I think that the chicken pieces could have been a little bigger.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

I do like that it is 100% chicken breast and obviously full of protein. The fact that it has no additive etc is even better.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

It is a good thing that they are never caged, yes it makes me feel reassured.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes I would, in fact have already bought it twice more. The Greek salad went down well although tweaked it a bit for example used less feta and less oil.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes the whole family found the chicken dippers tasty. My toddler son was particularly enthusiastic!
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes I think it is fairly priced.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it's packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase the more in future?
It's certainly a plus point particularly when thinking about balanced meals for my son.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Somewhat. They're still made into meat so hardly ethically perfect, but glad that's such a large company does give some thought to welfare.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Absolutely, nice easy-to-prepare food for quick simple meals. Tacos were a fab idea and went down well with all.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
My kids are very fussy eaters, so is a challenge to make something what would be good for them. And I am very happy because my kids love taste of Birds Eye chicken!
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes, it is good quality meat.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes, I want to make sure my kids eat healthy food.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
yes, it is very important for me.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes, I will definitely buy it again, we really enjoy taste of 20 minutes recipes. Easy, quick and healthy dinner for my family. Thank you very much to let me be part of this testing panel. I learned many new things about Birds Eye products. I am very happy to buy Birds Eye in the future! Thank you.
ohlittlepea · 22/05/2017 22:54

1, yes, taste fine, could perhaps be a little dry but that could be my overcooking, I'm always a bit paranoid about undercooking frozen chicken so tend to err on the side of caution.
2,

ohlittlepea · 22/05/2017 23:03

2, To be honest I do find it pricey compared to own brands of frozen chicken but i think that is probably because of the higher welfare standards which is a good reason for costing more.
3, this doesn't influence my opinion much, there are lots of ingredients in the products which i would consider as additives, for example milk sugar added to the chicken. Dippers. I

RueDeDay · 23/05/2017 05:38

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
I liked the taste (had the chargrilled chicken) but didn't like the texture. DD took one bite and refused to eat the rest.

2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Average value, good on special. We often eat Birds Eye frozen veg/fish and I thought it was very similar to that value-wise.

3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
No. I don't mind which part of the chicken the meat comes from, and while there may well have been 'no additives or preservatives' there were still a fair few extra ingredients on the label! The texture of the chicken made it feel more processed than their fish, though that may well just be perception.

4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
No, because I think thats pretty much the bare minimum, stsndard-wise. I'd be mire likely to buy it if it was free range and UK sourced.

5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
No, but purely because DD wouldn't eat it. Otherwise, I'd regard it as similar to fishfingers etc... Probably not the healthiest option, but not terrible either, and great as a quick meal option once a week.

acsec · 23/05/2017 09:23
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
DSS and DH tried it, both of them really enjoyed it, especially the chicken dipper taco boats.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
I was quite surprised at the price, I think it's pretty good value, and the dippers happened to be on special.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
I'm glad there's no additives and preservatives, it's obviously 'packed with protein' - it's chicken!
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
I'm glad the hens aren't caged, but I'd prefer it if they were free range.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family
Definitely! We have the char grills in the freezer for dinner this week!

Thank you for giving us the chance to try the products.

SuzCG · 23/05/2017 10:08

First, thank you to Birds Eye & Mumsnet for including us in this trial - I've never bought frozen chicken products before so this was a first for us. We (2 kids and I) had sort of the Great Greek Pitta for tea last night - I put the salad on the plate as a side, rather than in the pittas so I could tweak each of ours individually to what each of us likes salad wise, but the basic concept was there. I also did some wedges with it as looking at that as a portion I knew it wouldn't be enough for either of my hungry kids without something else to fill it out. As regards the questions...

  1. Yes, both of them said how tasty the chicken was (we just used the Original Chargrills) and tender
  2. I thought value was quite acceptable - I bought 2 boxes (of 4) of the chargrills for £5.50, so we'll get another meal out of it (which the kids are very happy about)
  3. Yes, I do like that it is made with 100% chicken breast as personally that is the only part of chicken I will eat. But it did surprise me that although it is MADE with 100% chicken breast they were actually only 75% chicken. For chargrills with just a glaze on them I did think this might have been a little higher?
  4. I'd have horrified if they had been cage reared and barn reared is okay I suppose - but honestly, I'd rather they were free range and had access to the outdoors. I really think that anything deserves a bit of fresh air and sunlight in whatever short life it has.
  5. Well, we've another pack in the freezer so we'll definitely be having them again... But seriously, yes, both children said last nights tea was really tasty, there was nothing they would change about it and that they definitely want it again. It's not the sort of thing that I would serve up all the time but will definitely be adding it to our rota of quick and acceptable meals I can churn out on after school hobby nights.

The final word goes to the 3 clean plates that were left behind - I think that sums it up!

Karmin · 23/05/2017 10:46

Made the Burgers

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken? - To a point, my other half and the kids loved it but I wasn't so sure
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value? - Yes, especially when it is on offer
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future? It is chicken so I would expect it to be packed with protein, however the knowledge that it is purely chicken breast does make it a lot more appealing.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product? Yes, we all know that chickens are bred for slaughter and consumption, but knowing they have a reasonable life makes you feel more comfortable with it, however barn reared is not always great conditions.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again? Yes and I really enjoyed not just having a beige meal! The recipes were interesting and tasty, it did make me think about how the basic product could be improved on. However, it would still be more likely to be a treat or I'm tired and don't want to really cook kind of meal
