Birds Eye have teamed up with Mumsnet, to find 250 testers for their 20-minute meals. Selected testers were given a Birds Eye pack with a £5 Birds Eye voucher and a £10 supermarket voucher, so that they could cook and taste the 20-minute meals for themselves.

Here’s what Birds Eye have said: ‘Tea time can be a stressful part of the day and coming up with nutritious and tasty meals the kids will enjoy is not easy.

That’s why Birds Eye has teamed up with Toby and Roo, Honest Mum, Not Another Mummy Blog and London Dad to create a series of delicious and wholesome meals for the family to enjoy. And guess what, they genuinely only take 20-minutes to prep, cook and serve!

Birds Eye frozen chicken is always made with 100% chicken breast, barn-reared chickens, and no artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.’

'Enjoyed Birds Eye Chicken? Why not leave us a product review here.'

If you took part in this test please comment on the thread, with your answers to these questions:

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
  2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
  3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
  4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
  5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

All those who tested and post their feedback on here and the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

  1. I enjoyed the taste (probably more than my children did!) They really do prefer the taste/texture of fresh chicken.
  2. I was surprised how reasonably priced the Bird's Eye products were.
  3. It does. Knowing it is 100% chicken breast is important.
  4. It does give reassurance but I would like to know more about where the chicken was sourced.
  5. I would occasionally - maybe once a fortnight. This has given me ideas how to serve the products differently though - instead of just with a jacket potato and salad/veg!

Thanks for involving us in your research!

asuwere · 18/05/2017 11:17
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
yes, it was good.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Average - would tend to buy it when on offer though.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
It is nice to know; I don't always think about/look at the ethics of how the chicken is reared but it's good to know.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes.
MakeTeaNotWar · 18/05/2017 11:19
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes! A lot more than I thought we would. While I happily give the kids fish fingers and frozen fish products, I was under the impression that frozen chicken would taste cheap and nasty but it was very good.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes v well priced but I would wait until it is on special offer and then stock up.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes I have to admit it I thought it would be more eyelids and bumholes so really reassuring to know that it's not all the dregs of the animal.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

I'm not bothered about this either way.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes a tea in a hurry type meal, I absolutely would. We made the taco boats which were easy and a fun supper.

peronel · 18/05/2017 11:22
  1. We all enjoyed the taste of the Birds Eye chicken. It was moist with no gristle and all of it was eaten.
  2. I feel it is good value, especially knowing that it will all be eaten.
  3. Yes, knowing that there are no additives or preservatives makes me much more likely to buy in future. I am trying to cut down on processed foods but am planning to keep Birds Eye Chicken Dippers in the freezer for a quick, easy teatime meal. Great for when school friends come for tea unexpectedly! I also am trying to cut down on carbs and have more protein based meals, so the high protein content is important.
  4. DEFINITELY! To be honest I would have expected the chicken would probably have been caged as I didn't see anything on the packaging to indicate otherwise. I am very pleased that Birds Eye are responsible enough to care about animal welfare (which results in a higher quality product). I see their next step as being to choose to use UK reared, free range, preferably organic, chicken. This would set them apart from other well known brands. As well as giving them a marketing angle it would result in better tasting food. (Because there are more and more of us that are thinking ethically and morally now and wanting to know where products are sourced - and often finding out leaves a bitter taste...)
I intend to feed this food to my family again (not the taco recipe which I enjoyed and expected my family to also, but they found it rather bland. They ate every bit of chicken, though!)

Thank you for including me in the trial, much appreciated!

SparklestheUnicorn · 18/05/2017 11:22
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes, we all did, especially my youngest. We made the Taco Boats.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Actually, as a regular Aldi shopper, it seemed expensive to me. That said, it tasted good and I was surprised at the range available.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, definitely if I saw them on offer somewhere. Generally I buy fresh chicken breasts and then coat them in breadcrumbs myself, but knowing that, I would be likely to buy some and keep in the freezer for quick and easy meals.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

It does, though right now because of our personal situation, I am more focused on price.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes definitely, if it was on offer in a supermarket.

SparePantsAndLego · 18/05/2017 11:23
  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
I used the recipe and chicken as a quick after school meal for visiting children and they loved it.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
It was very good value.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Not really - all meat is protein and I don't think this is any higher in protein. Also it's no more important than any other nutrient in a healthy, balanced diet. That said, no additives or preservatives is definitely a good thing.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

No. I would prefer free range to be honest. Under EU rules battery cages are banned anyway (although obviously meat from caged birds can still be sold as it is imported).
Barn reared chicken is an incredibly intensively produced product.
The 'barns' are huge sheds that hold thousands of broiler birds.
I know I'm on my high horse a little but I don't really like it when companies attempt to claim higher welfare by using misleading terms.
Barn reared doesn't mean anything in terms of welfare and the claim that Birds Eye can trace their meat back to the farm of origin is no more than the rules on traceability require them to be able to do.
The facts on chicken rearing are available but busy shoppers can easily overlook them when companies use terms to imply a 'better' welfare product www.ciwf.org.uk/farm-animals/chickens/meat-chickens/

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
I would use the recipe again but with a higher welfare alternative.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
I did, it was very tasty and all my family enjoyed.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
It really is - affordable price for a good quality product
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Oh definitely. I can pick these up and know whats in them
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
It does, makes me think Birdseye cares about animal welfare.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes definitely. Its such a handy product to have in the freezer.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes - loved the chargrills flavour
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes - especially the 4 packs. The portions were on the small side though - ok for the kids but adults could do with being bigger.

Yes

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

We made the chicken burger (which was less of a recipe more of a serving suggestion I thought) and the katsu omelette. Both were very tasty and the katsu omlette introduced us to lots of new flavours (and ingredients that are not covered which will probably never use again!). I made the chicken burger for the kids and I look so nice I made another couple for my husband for dinner! We regularly have the chicken dippers on their own (with catch up) and have been eating them for years now so I know that my children like the taste of them but it really did raise it up a level having a recipe and an idea of how to serve it.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

With me being very expensive, I do think that this is good value for money especially when it's on offer in the supermarkets.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes it does, but I would be a bit annoyed if it wasn't!

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

To be fair I thought that caged was banned anyway and therefore would be horrified if they were produced from caged birds.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes I would, and I have. We've had the burger again already (adapted with a few extras) and I may try the pitta bread recipe as well.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Hells yes! It was delumptious! Only bad thing was they'd eaten the lot before I could get my camera out!
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Not bad, about avergae really. With four kids I need to feed my lot healthy filling dinners, and some birds eye chicken with a ton of veg is great for a one off here and there.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
I will buy them again, just not loads as I tend to buy shops own value ranges.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Its nice to know definitely.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes, I find Birds Eye a trusted brand and as a family its always been part of at least one dinner a week! x

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes, myself and the children did. DH is not a fan of chicken, so he's yet to be convinced

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I definitely think its affordable and the portions are good too.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

I am a regular buyer of Bird's Eye chicken dippers as they are the only dippers my dc's like the taste and texture of. Knowing how good quality they are gives me confidence that I can still provide a fast meal without compromise.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes. I have my own chickens and they are my girls, pampered and a bit too spoiled. I hate seeing hens crammed into cages. That being said, I also hate overcrowded barns and no access to the outdoors too. I'm hoping that Bird's Eye will continue to push forward with chicken welfare.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Absolutely apart from the grumpy man, we love the taste and I love the versatility.

It does I try to buy free range or organic when I can
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Of course it cut the time of meal preparation in half and tasted very nice

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Absolutely yes! My whole family enjoys the taste of Birds Eye Chicken and they especially love Chicken Chargrills.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes I do because there's no waste and I love the convenience.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Totally. Plus I'm never embarrassed to tell other parents that I've fed my family with Birds Eye chicken because it is 100% chicken!
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
It certainly does. Incidentally I didn't know that before I took part in this review!
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
With out a doubt! All Birds Eye products get a thumbs up from my whole family - fussy teenagers included!!

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Really enjoyed by everyone, particularly the char-grilled chicken which we had never tried before

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Definitely good value - managed to get 3 packets with the voucher

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes it does. You hear a lot of scare stories about what goes into chicken products!

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes, I feel all companies should be looking very carefully at the welfare of the animals which are being reared on their behalf.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Definitely, the kids in particular love the products and they are so handy to have tucked in the freezer.

queenoftheschoolrun · 18/05/2017 13:02

Thanks for letting us take part in the product test.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes, we did. It was much nicer than I expected.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Again, yes. And Ocado has the 12 dipper packs on offer at £1!
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes, I was impressed with the quality.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
To be honest, I'd hope this was a given rather than a marketing opportunity.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Absolutely!

But...I have to say that I was not at all impressed by the recipe booklet. Most were serving suggestions rather than recipes. And the Katsu don recipe was almost impossible to follow: the ingredients don't match the quantities given in the method, the instructions are unclear and how much chicken stock is equivalent to a sachet of dashi? It was clear that nobody had actually tested the recipe before going to print!

RupertsMum2 · 18/05/2017 13:07

Firstly, thank you for choosing us to test the Birds Eye chicken.

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
We all really enjoyed it although ds1 and ds2 were not keen on the chargrilled breasts and went with the southern fried ones in the pita breads instead.

2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
It was particularly good value as it was on special offer so I was able to buy 3 different types to try.

3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes. It was also great having the recipe cards. I will use these again.

4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes.

5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes. They ate the chicken in the pita bread so quickly I didn't get a photo so we had to make the chicken dippers and tacos recipe in order to capture it.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes - I wasn't expecting to but was pleasantly surprised. I bought the chicken chargrills and we all thought they were really delicious and not too processed or salty.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I tend to buy own brand food but the Birds Eye stuff is sometimes on offer so its good value. I think the fact I can store it in the freezer means it is good value too as there is no food waste.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes I wouldn't buy the chicken if it was caged.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

*1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes we did. I made the kicking katsu don with birds eye chicken dippers by London_dad. We all enjoyed the taste of the chicken dippers as they tasted good and were nice and crispy.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Tescos had them on special offer so I paid £2 for 24 chicken dippers. I felt this was good value.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes it does. I like to know what I'm eating and feel reassured that the dippers were 100% chicken breast.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?*
I care about animal welfare and have eaten free range eggs for years. I do personally feel reassured that the birds are never caged. Would personally want the chicken to be British to make it even more tempting.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Absolutely and already have! The kicking katsu recipe was absolutely delicious and was using flavours that I have not used before. It only took the allocated 20 minutes to make as well which is so valuable on a weekday schedule. I enjoyed this so much I copied the recipe and took it into my colleagues at work who have also bought the ingredients and made this recipe! Thank you Birds eye and Mumsnet for the opportunity of taking part in this product test. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting involved with this.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Absolutely! We made the Perfectly Posh Burger, the Great Greek Pittas and we also have the ingredients to make the Kicking Katsu Don, but haven't got round to that one yet. We also found several flavours extremely cheap (50p for a two pack!) in our local Asda, including Crispy Hot & Spicy and Chilli Lime Zest flavours and went slightly off plan, as, needless to say, we stocked up! Definitely alleviated my working parent mindset of quick and easy meals but they have to be nutritious! We've served them with savoury rice, wraps and salad and even vegetable fries!

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Yes, particularly when you find them on promotion, which they usually are somewhere at any given time!

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, and these recipes kickstarted us to try new flavours and just mix things up a little, having become stuck in a kitchen rut for a while.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes, as animal welfare is important, but I would be even happier if Birds Eye worked towards the chickens being British and free range.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Absolutely. Thank you for taking us out of our kitchen rut and trying new flavours again! I might even be back with some more comments and photos!
