Birds Eye have teamed up with Mumsnet, to find 250 testers for their 20-minute meals. Selected testers were given a Birds Eye pack with a £5 Birds Eye voucher and a £10 supermarket voucher, so that they could cook and taste the 20-minute meals for themselves.

Here’s what Birds Eye have said: ‘Tea time can be a stressful part of the day and coming up with nutritious and tasty meals the kids will enjoy is not easy.

That’s why Birds Eye has teamed up with Toby and Roo, Honest Mum, Not Another Mummy Blog and London Dad to create a series of delicious and wholesome meals for the family to enjoy. And guess what, they genuinely only take 20-minutes to prep, cook and serve!

Birds Eye frozen chicken is always made with 100% chicken breast, barn-reared chickens, and no artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.’

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes we did - the DCs loved it more than I did though. DH thought it was delicious! We made the burgers with the southern fried chicken in brioche buns with avocado, lettuce and tomatoes (pic attached). We had these with sweet potato wedges and salad.

2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes, very good value.

3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
I didn't know that - but I think that has made me more inclined to buy it in the future.

4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes, very much so. I try to buy free range fresh chicken as much as I can. It definitely makes it more appealing.

5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes I would. We had such a quick easy meal, prepared in record time. So convenient when you're in a rush and very tasty. All plates were clean and DCs asked if we could have the same meal again next week. A good option when time is short.

Yes, I'm very conscious of animal welfare.

Yes it tasted delicious.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I definitely think its affordable and a really good price for everyone.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

I am a regular buyer of Bird's Eye chicken anyway as it tastes so good and we all love it in our family - but knowing how good it is makes me satisfied in my choices in buying this chicken.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

To be honest, its not something i think about but obviously its a positive thing and another great thing about this product.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

100%. Its a family favourite.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes. We really did. The chicken was fresh and looked nice when cut into strips. We made the tacos and although they were a little simple I think I could do something similar with a range of products in the future.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Absolutely. In fact, that is one reason I have avoided it in the past. It has been priced low and I have equated that with low quality. I will be buying them again knowing they are better than perceived.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

This is a more persuasive argument for me. I try to always buy well-reared food.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again

Yes. I am surprised that they have such a big range and will feel less snobbish about them in the future.

Yes, enjoyed by everyone, from big to small.

Yes, very much so.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes. I always thought of frozen food as more junk food so used to bypass the freezer aisles (apart from fish fingers 😊) but have been converted – cheaper, easier and often fresher.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes. I wouldn’t buy eggs that weren’t free-range / barn-reared so look for the same standard for meat.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Already have! Great recipe ideas that have increased my repertoire enormously!
RockingDuck · 23/05/2017 13:09

Yes - a great healthy meal option that the kids love.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes and no. There are cheaper alternatives out there but birds eye products are extremely tasty.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
It didn't really bother me whether it was or wasn't so in that respect it would't make me more or less likely to buy in the future.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes. There's nothing I hate more than caged animals.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
I would happily feed my family Birds Eye chicken again but not daily, I think it would be more as a treat option or if I haven't got much time to spare.

Thank you to both Birds Eye and mumsnet for giving me this opportunity, both me and my family loved taking part.

It does reassure me,although I would much prefer it to be from free-range chickens
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes,I would feed it to my family again, although I have to say that I would use it as part of a 'quick' tea if I was pushed for time.

We tried the pitta pockets recipe, but I subsituted flour tortillas for the pittas.Whole family loved them!

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes, I occasionally use frozen chicken in stews etc, and was surprised that the chicken was moist and flavourful.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I bought the chicken dippers and one packet was more than enough for me and my daughter, however, I can see this being more of an issue with more than one child in the home.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

I would be more likely to purchase the birds eye range to keep in the freezer for lazy days.

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes, I appreciate that it is difficult to make the distinction between ethical purchases.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Yes, we are going to get some of the chicken burgers to have with the guacalmole recipe that was in the pack.

* Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken? *
Honestly everyone loved it !! My boys cleared their plates and wanted more after. It tasted so fresh and really really tender, you would have never have know it was frozen chicken, tasted like fresh chicken from the butchers !

* 2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value? *
100% Definitely agree it is very good value, You find supermarkets bring out their own versions but never taste the same as birds eye and often charge more for their own version. I think this is exceptional good value for money and very rarely do i not buy birds eye in my grocery shopping.

3.* Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future? *
Yes knowing that it is 100% chicken and not got nasties in is a huge thing for me, and with a fussy toddler trying new foods i am more likely to purchase products with the good stuff over others that don't.

* 4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product? *
Yes it's always good to know that the chickens have been looked after and treated rightly.

  1. * Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again? *
I would definitely feed birds eye chicken to my family again, everyone loved it and really enjoyed using it to make so many different meals . My children clear their plates and really enjoyed their dinner, i have already bought more and stocked up the freezer of many different birds eye chicken products for tea times !!

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes although I wouldn't be worried if it was thigh, just that it's actual chicken.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes, but like many others free range would be better.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

So far we've made 2 of the recipe suggestions (tacos and pitta breads) and both were happily eaten by the fussy 6 year old so that's always a good sign! Our feedback is as follows:

  1. Did we enjoy the taste? Yes, I personally preferred the chargrilled chicken over the chicken nuggets but I do have a pretty negative opinion of chicken nugget type "kids" food!
  2. is it good value? When I bought the products they were on offer in Tesco so we did get a lot of food for our money. When it comes to chicken I'm a "must buy free range" kinda gal and I would say you get just as much value from buying a whole free range chicken and using it for 2 meals though!
  3. 100% chicken breast? I didn't know this but to be honest I'm more interested in the quality of the meat rather than which part of the bird it's from. Arguably thighs are tastier they just don't look as pretty. It's good that there are no additives or preservatives though.
  4. Barn reared not caged? This does little to reassure me. Whilst barn is better than caged there's a very wide description of what this could mean in terms of welfare. They could still be horribly crowded. I would be considerably more impressed by free range!
  5. Would I feed it again? Yes but probably not often. It offers a convenience as something you could have in the freezer as a standby/emergency meal. Brilliant if you were coming back from holiday etc and hadn't yet gone to the supermarket to re-stock. I would probably opt for the chargrilled chicken over the nuggets though. I probably won't buy them again as my son and fiancé prefer their meat to be uncoated!! All in all though it's been an interesting test as I don't usually consider the frozen section for my meat and it's proved that there can be some advantages

Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

We all enjoyed the taste of the chicken. We had BBQ chicken chargrills in taco boats which meant I could get all sorts of peppers and veg in without my kids noticing - but think we will prefer to try it next time with wraps (as boats were a bit chewy and messy!! but chicken was fab).

We also did a kind of caesar's salad with original chicken chargrills and green beans - the chicken cut into strips really well. This was a more grown up looking dinner - and pleased the hubby (also a lot easier than woking up a chicken).

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value? There are some good offers on these items at times which makes it okay, but portions are a bit small. Great cooking for toddlers but anyone over 8 would need an extra box!!

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU HAD THE OPTION OF LARGER BOX SIZES - when buying for a family of five - (with two teenage boys) we need a lot of boxes. Would be nice to have more room in the freezer. So, could you do a family sized box of 6 ...... please.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes it does. It seems more like fast food with benefits xx

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product? It's nice to know - but not an initial consideration for purchasing.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes - and it's in the freezer!!

Thank you for the vouchers and the ideas - has certainly made our emergency nights more tasty.

2014newme · 23/05/2017 16:21

If you've ever seen barn reared chickens it's a very low welfare standard. I'm surprised by the number of people thinking it's great. It is better than battery but still poor.
