We are looking for 50 MNers, with at least one child under the age of 12, to test the new Google Home. If selected, you’ll receive the product, worth £129, and get to keep it! Grin

What you’ll need do: Test Google Home for two weeks and give feedback on your experience by posting on a feedback thread as well as completing a short survey.

Here’s what Google has to say about the product: “The time we get to spend at home with our family and friends is pretty special. So what if technology could help us make the most of those moments, instead of sometimes pulling our attention away from them? Google Home is a hands-free smart speaker powered by the Google Assistant that does just that. Whether you want to get answers from Google, enjoy your music*, manage your everyday tasks and control compatible smart devices around your home, all you have to do is say “Ok Google”.

*Google Home is optimised for selected music services only. Subscriptions/payments may be required.

Below is a video about the product:

Thanks and good luck!

I'm working and wanted some music so I asked it to play an 80s mix and it is. I'm not easily impressed and I'm pretty au fait with tech but I really love this!

HalfCarrot · 01/06/2017 15:23

Can't remember which pp mentioned it but you can upload your iTunes library to google play for free and stream it from there.

DrSpin · 01/06/2017 15:27

Half carrot that's good to know is it relatively easy to do that?

HalfCarrot · 01/06/2017 15:36

Yes you might have to be on a computer though. You install a program and tell it where your music is kept on the computer and it uploads it. It goes really quickly because they match it to what other people have already uploaded.

DrSpin · 01/06/2017 15:38

Ok thanks so much :)

ShelaghTurner · 01/06/2017 17:08

That's really useful Carrot, thanks.

Absolutely in love with mine, just being able to ask what time the next bus to ... is etc and it definitely improves over time, DD loves asking the crystal ball yes no questions and to do the animal noises and if you ask her to make you a sandwich she says she can't help you, but if you ask again straight away she makes a magic wand sound and says your a sandwich DD thinks this is so funny

MTBMummy · 02/06/2017 08:36

The mute button is being used to put Google to bed when I've had enough of the kids shouting at it.

Absolutely loving it, have used the shopping list, music, timers, and asked far too many questions including playing games with it.

Probably my favourite thing has to be DS(3) saying "hey noodle" when he wants to ask it a dinosaur question, most annoying is DD(7) (and DP) adding stupid things to the shopping list, like horses and bicycles!

Seriously looking at a chrome cast adaptor for the telly, and going to upload our iTunes collection to google play this weekend.

SnickersWasAHorse · 02/06/2017 08:53

We bought our homes from Argos where they came with free chrome casts.

We had a tv in the spare room which has no aerial connection so we put the chrome cast on that. Really easy to use Netflix or iplayer.

ShelaghTurner · 02/06/2017 08:58

Uploaded my iTunes music overnight so using that now. Bought an Amazon firestick not long ago, now gutted I didn't buy a chrome cast instead 🙄

Most annoying thing is being in the middle of listening to something and one of the kids asks it a stupid question or changes the music to Taylor Sodding Swift. The mute button is very handy...

PurpleCrazyHorse · 02/06/2017 14:35

We're also discovering the delight of the mute button. 7yo questioning was amusing to start with, but less so now Grin, the 2yo can only say 'hey google' then just jabbers!

I'm looking at other tech to make it work even better. Investigating IFTTT apps and things like Harmony. We absolutely love it.

Flapdoodles · 03/06/2017 00:05

We are really enjoying using it and the timing of receiving it at half term is great as the kids are really testing it, constantly asking questions ... poor Google!

SoupDragon · 03/06/2017 08:03

Ooooh... mine is telling me "something went wrong, try again in a few seconds" or "there's a glitch, try again in a few seconds"

I'm guessing this might be a switchit on and off again moment. Or it's just not ready to wake up yet.

ShelaghTurner · 03/06/2017 09:04

We had that once yesterday. Leading up to it we'd been playing music and it had sounded like the record had got stuck (old people reference there kids!) but it's been fine since. Tbh anything it does at the moment tickles me so it was vaguely exciting that it apologised for not working Grin

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 03/06/2017 09:09

How do you access the quiz bit then?

SnickersWasAHorse · 03/06/2017 09:33

You just ask it.
Say 'hey google, can we do a quiz?'

There is a theme tune and everything.

Like I say though, the questions aren't really written by anyone, it's just an algorithm that comes up with them so it's a bit hit and miss.

OhDearToby · 03/06/2017 10:12

Mine just arrived after some confusion about my address. Set up was super easy and we love it so far!

Candyperfumegirl · 03/06/2017 14:46

Anyone know how to get it to give lotto results? I just get the 'can't help you with that right now' even though I have tried to phrase it a few different ways

SnickersWasAHorse · 03/06/2017 14:51

Sadly she knows a lot of things but she can't do everything.

SnickersWasAHorse · 03/06/2017 14:52

Did you know to help can get it to track flight prices?

You say 'can you tell me the price of a flight to ......' and it'll ask you for the dates you want to fly.

OhDearToby · 03/06/2017 14:55

It's amazing how quickly you get over feeling like an idiot talking to a small speaker in the corner of the room!

Iambubbles86 · 03/06/2017 15:02

During the quiz I was playing with my children it asked us for a word that defines friendly. The answers were:
A)affluence
B)camaraderie
Or
C)fornication !!!!
ShockGrin

PinkSnowAndStars · 04/06/2017 15:30

Is anyone else that got picked still waiting for theirs to arrive? Fingers crossed it won't be too much longer! Desperate for a play now

OhDearToby · 04/06/2017 17:18

pink mine only arrived yesterday because it had to be resent by Google. Something had gone wrong with my address when mumsnet were processing it. I emailed Poppynat MNHQ and she sorted it out quickly so might be worth seeing of She knows where it is.

Lunar1 · 05/06/2017 09:38

This is going to end up being one of the product tests that I'm signed up to for life! I'm on the free trial music trial right now, but there's no way I'll give it up. I never normally bother putting music on in the house either as I always find it faffy. This is just so easy.
