We are looking for 50 MNers, with at least one child under the age of 12, to test the new Google Home. If selected, you’ll receive the product, worth £129, and get to keep it! Grin

What you’ll need do: Test Google Home for two weeks and give feedback on your experience by posting on a feedback thread as well as completing a short survey.

Here’s what Google has to say about the product: “The time we get to spend at home with our family and friends is pretty special. So what if technology could help us make the most of those moments, instead of sometimes pulling our attention away from them? Google Home is a hands-free smart speaker powered by the Google Assistant that does just that. Whether you want to get answers from Google, enjoy your music*, manage your everyday tasks and control compatible smart devices around your home, all you have to do is say “Ok Google”.

*Google Home is optimised for selected music services only. Subscriptions/payments may be required.

Below is a video about the product:

Thanks and good luck!

My five year old just figured out how to play the Pokemon themeConfusedover and over!

SoupDragon · 31/05/2017 13:49

I think that they really need to sort the app out as it's rubbish. So difficult to find how to do stuff on it and not intuitive at all.

ShelaghTurner · 31/05/2017 16:17

Yeah the app is pretty pointless at the moment, once you've set the thing up. And it doesn't really help much either, I've had to google for info.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2017 16:20

When you open the app it should show an obvious "dashboard" where you can find and control things. I wanted to turn the volume up so I could hear the radio in the garden and it was hidden away tool a good number of clicks to find.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 31/05/2017 17:04

soupdragon just say 'hey Google, turn the volume up'. DD keeps turning it up and I keep turning down!

You can ask it to turn the volume up to 70% etc if that's easier. If in doubt just ask it and see what it does.

Iambubbles86 · 31/05/2017 17:07

Anyone notice the volume goes up to 11 haha

ShelaghTurner · 31/05/2017 17:23

Kids are currently getting it to say that it's shaking its butt. Hmm Not exactly the intellectual experience i was hoping for!

SoupDragon · 31/05/2017 18:19

I was in the garden.
Google was in the kitchen.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2017 18:22

And there was my earlier example where it was too loud to hear me. You should be able to do these things easily from the app and you can't.

Lunar1 · 31/05/2017 18:46

Can anyone tell me where the shopping list goes and how to do the volume? I've really tried with the app

Lunar1 · 31/05/2017 18:49

Sorry, just read down and found my shopping list

Paddybare · 31/05/2017 18:58

Would love to test!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 31/05/2017 23:52

Took your lead soupdragon and stuck it on the window sill. Luckily our garden is so small I could still talk to it. Good job both the neighbours are away, not sure they would have enjoyed my sounds of the 90s selection or repeated 'hey google'!

The Google app is a bit of a pain though, the shopping list is buried in there and I haven't ventured much further. We hardly need to use it with our Chromecast so I'm unfamiliar with it. Looks like there's lots of stuff there I won't use and no easy way to get to stuff I might!

ShelaghTurner · 01/06/2017 07:36

Muted it about 9 last night to stop the kids playing with it (they don't know about the button on the back Wink) and it's just 'reminded' me that the button is on mute and how to turn it back on. Attention seeking little beggar!

SnickersWasAHorse · 01/06/2017 07:51

You can just ask it it turn the volume up or down or do it by touching the top and moving your finger around the white volume lights, no need for the app. Just say 'volume down' then you'll see the lights. Run your finger over them in the circle and you'll change the volume.

With the shopping list it's on the app or you can ask it to read it out.

Lunar1 · 01/06/2017 08:43

Thank you, I didn't know it was touch sensitive.

Try asking how many days to Christmas and look at the colours when it answers, I love that touch.

SnickersWasAHorse · 01/06/2017 08:45

That's lovely.

Has anyone tried the quiz yet? I love the quiz.

SnickersWasAHorse · 01/06/2017 08:46

Lunar, you can tap the top to stop it playing too.

iemma321q · 01/06/2017 09:45

It's a great device isn't it. We are really enjoying using it. How far has everybody got it from their router? We are having to use it in the room nearest to the router which isn't really where we want it. Would appreciate any suggestions that would allow us to set it up elsewhere.

ShelaghTurner · 01/06/2017 09:52

Mine is upstairs in my room at the moment. Have been working up here the last few days and so using it for music. The router is down in the living room, underneath.

Lunar1 · 01/06/2017 09:52

Mine is about 3m from the router. Not tries any further as this is where I'd ideally keep it.

PinkSnowAndStars · 01/06/2017 11:20

I haven't had mine yet! Can't wait for it to arrive!!

SoupDragon · 01/06/2017 11:25

Mine is perhaps 10m from the router but has a reasonably clear "view" of it through doorways.

I'm loving it for the music alone TBH. At the moment I'm not sure how else I would use it as it won't set reminders. Maybe I'll try setting a timer on it. I actually think it's worth it for the just music though and would be tempted to buy another for that. Having said that, does it play the music on all units or just the one you spoke to?

The shopping list is too hidden away on the app to be useful for me really.

DD (11) has spent a lot of time asking for animal noises (it doesn't know bison). When DD asked what she sounded like, Google answered something like "that's, like, totally awesome!" In a daft voice.

I think we need to wait for the novelty to wear off before we find out how it can actually be useful!!

SoupDragon · 01/06/2017 11:26

I would like a slightly longer power cable on it.

SnickersWasAHorse · 01/06/2017 13:58

As I said we have got three and so long as they are in wifi range they work.
