This is the feedback thread for the 250 MNers who have been testing Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint.

Here’s what Valspar have to say: “Blend v700 promises to give you ultimate coverage, pure colour, splatter resistance and allows walls to be wiped down without removing the paint. With excellent scrubbability and great stain resistance means Blend v700™ withstands the toughest household stains from felt tips to black coffee, making it perfect for busy homes and high-traffic rooms, such as children’s bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways. With long-term performance you can rely on, your colour will stay true for years to come.”

"As well as being available in a variety of finishes, including matt, mid-sheen and gloss, the Valspar unique colour matching technology can replicate any colour the eye can see - that's 2.2 million shades! Choose a colour that's personal to you and your family - be it the shade of a festive Christmas bauble, or a favourite ornament, simply take the item to your local B&Q and its exact colour can be scanned and recreated in paint form.”

Testers, answer the below questions, but also feel free to share any other comments you have on your experience:
1. How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample? Were you happy with the colour of the paint and the service you received?
2. Which room did you decorate and why?
3. Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
4. Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Please also share your before and after photos of your project on this thread and complete the feedback survey when we email this to you.

All who complete the required feedback by the 11th April will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

We had a colour in mind when we went as we needed it to match our utility room units and the kitchen as we had already had it fitted. We used the chip rack to test out different lights on a few colours we thought were right. Colour was perfect, service was great, there were two people at the fancy counter ready to serve us, and the chap that did was really friendly and made it very easy.
  1. Which room did you decorate and why?
We did our utility room as its been unfinished for some time since the units were fitted. Baby number two is due on April 17th and I wanted space for all the extra laundry I know is coming. At least it will be nice to be in there now. Also the volume of paint provided by the trial meant we could finish it!
  1. Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
We were painting onto new plaster, after a watered down white coat. It covered smoothly and brilliantly. I was very tempted to leave it after one coat as it seemed to be such good coverage, but did do a second as the light is quite bright in there and it did have the odd patch where we hadn't rollered or cut in quite well enough. Really good though!
  1. Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes definately. We are mid renovation on a 1930s house and trying to be sensitive to style and features. The number of different colours available and also types of paint bases were excellent. We actually bought the paint to do the outside woodwork/fascias/guttering whilst we were there as it was such a good system.

We finished painting the bedroom this weekend. When we took off the wallpaper (about 4 layers since 1950 I think!) we were stunned at the state of the wall underneath! We patched up the plaster as much as we could but I wasn't sure whether the Valspar paint would be enough to cover the imperfections or whether we would have to wallpaper the room again.

We went to B&Q and had a very helpful guy. We colour matched our paint to a chair which we had previously painted and wanted to put in the room - the colour match was brilliant, it looks exactly the same as the chair except perhaps a VERY slight difference in direct sunlight but not enough to notice.

The paint was such good quality, a marked difference from others I have used before. It did take a while to paint the room as the paint was so thick but the advantage was that it only took two coats to cover the terrible plaster completely. We could not believe it was so effective. It was difficult to clean off brushes - no hope of reusing the roller - which would have been a minor annoyance had we had to pay for the roller.

I would definitely use this paint again. Yes it's expensive but the quality is so much better than other brands. In fact we are going to use this paint to paint our kitchen next, which is a HUGE job!!!

1. How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample? Were you happy with the colour of the paint and the service you received?
I went in with an idea of what colour I wanted but to be honest, I did find it quite overwhelming with the number of colours available so I picked up several colour thingys and went home to decide. Decided on "Purple Hibiscus" and it was made up quickly. Couldn't get the brushes unfortunately as not in stock at my local - well it shows as in stock online but not hanging where they should be and staff didn't know where any others would be!

2. Which room did you decorate and why?
Decorated my dining room - we have never got round to decorating this since we moved in 9yrs ago so I felt now was the time! It did actually have a green wallpaper up but I stripped that so the before photo is actually just lining paper.

3. Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
I was impressed - it did go on nicely and covered our walls quite well. I was only going to be doing 2 walls but decided to do the whole room so had to buy another tin! (colour exactly the same as 1st tin!) It dries really quickly, washes off hands easily and doesn't smell bad; all important with toddlers trying to 'help'! It gave good coverage, even over my uneven walls. I did have to do 2 coats - the first coat I did just using a brush so it wasn't totally even but the second coat with the roller evened it all out.
I even painted the horrible orange wooden curtain poles and was surprised at how well it went on them!
After the walls were dry, I put the colour swatch thing on the wall and it was an exact match so the colour you choose is actually the colour you get, which is good to know!

4. Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would definitely consider it - although the price does put me off a bit; about double the price of the alternative I had been looking at.

Thanks for letting me do this test - gave me the encouragement to actually get the room done! :)

  1. How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample? Were you happy with the colour of the paint and the service you received?

I downloaded the app and scrolled through the colours. It was a bit overwhelming as there were so many. I took a couple of photos of the room we were going to redecorate and knew I wanted something neutral to go with the carpet which had recently been laid. I narrowed it down to a few and asked my husband for his opinion. Being colourblind it was a bit pointless... I finally decided on Clay Figurine. The staff at our local B&Q are a bit useless and generally hard to find. The staff were fine at the counter but didn't really seem to know a lot about the product or offer any advice. We couldn't get the paint brushes with the voucher as there were none on the shelf and despite asking two members of staff if there were any more they were unwilling to check and just told us 'buy Harris brushes as they're just the same'.

  1. Which room did you decorate and why?

We redecorated the dining room. Although it was only done (with Dulux Once paint) about 18 months ago, with a toddler in the house (along with a pre-teen!) it had just become really grubby at varying heights from cruising age/height to now! We are also about to let our house out as we are moving overseas so wanted to freshen the room up anyway. We decided on a lighter colour than our previous choice too as although it's a double aspect room, it's really quite dark in there.

  1. Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

Husband wasn't convinced the tub would even get around the room with one coat as it was going on quite thick and he seemed to be getting through a lot just doing the edging. He managed to JUST get one coat in the room out of the tin. He said the roller head was fine but the roller holder itself was very weak and seemed to keep bending when trying to paint. He said although it did cover well, he didn't feel it was any better quality wise than cheaper paints he has been using recently in other rooms of the house. I can't comment on the 'scrubbability' of the paint yet as it hasn't been on for long enough to test that feature out.

  1. Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Given the amount of redecorating we have been doing recently as we prepare to let our house out, we probably wouldn't bother using it again. For the price there are paints on the market for half that which are just as good. My husband would give it a 6/10. The idea of colour matching is great though and the range of colours is really vast.

First 3 photos are before using the Valspar paint, will add the after in my next post.

Now they've uploaded in the wrong order haha. Photo taken in the day is before, taken at night is immediately after and with table in the room is five days later (today).

asuwere · 03/04/2017 20:19

I just remembered that I had painted a bit of an old table so I could test the 'scrubability' - I'd drawn on it with crayon and have now just scrubbed it off. The crayon did wash off but I did also get a bit of the paint colour on the cloth. It would cope with some scrubbing but not regularly, I think. I have used more robust paint in the past which was cheaper!

On the plus side, I'd also forgotten to say that I did like the tin. Very easy to open and the lid is solid enough that it goes back on and seals easily! Very useful when you need to stop and start painting between meals/nursery pick up/tantrums etc.

Also liked the size of the tester pot - quite big and covers quiye a large area so handy to get for touching up areas in future.

askasillyquestion · 03/04/2017 20:25

We took a cushion cover that was deep blue for the Valspar experts to scan and match the colour. However, the paint came out purple. The B&Q experts said it would look different when it dried- but it was still purple. So we've not used it for our project

In addition to this we couldn't use the voucher for a roller as they had run out. So all in all this product test didn't really work.

We colour matched a leaf! Great service from the chap.

DDs bedroombecause it was magnolia
  1. Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
I'm very impressed. Went on easily, looked a little thin in places but after 2 coats was a lovely colour and finish. We iused the mid sheen and although it was a very dark colour, it reflected the light beautifully.
  1. Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes absolutely. Iusually but the cheaper stuff but this is well worth the money, and if it's really scrubbable like it claims I'll be ecstatic!

We chose from the rack, loved the different light options, gave a much better idea of the paints final colour.

Were you happy with the colour of the paint and the service you received?
Yes, the service was fab, we were a little worried about not being able to match the paint again but the man serving was friendly, full of advice and said it wouldn't be a problem. Only frustrating thing for us was that the roller sets were o popular none were in stock- the store said they had supply issues since Christmas but really recommend them! We also got advice on other types of valspar paints too.

  1. Which room did you decorate and why?
We will be decorating out toilet at the weekend and will come back and update, however have been using valspar contract matt white and its fantastic, much better coverage than the other paints we have been using.

Absolutely, paint goes much further, get good coverage and less patchy bits from the first coat.

First coat is on and it's looking great so far, I think the second coat will only need tobe a quick one. I'll do a proper post with photos when it's finished!

The Valspar section in our local B&Q was quite small and not staffed. However, there were plenty of paint samples to chose from and the lighting was very helpful. I liked that the range of colours was so wide and seemed to be a cross between Dulux and F&B. I chose one of the colour samples on the chip rack (Country Vicarage) which was a dusky pink in a grey tone. I knew I wanted a silk finish but I was unclear as to why the tins of paint had A, B or C marked on them. As I was trying to work it out a member of staff appeared who was able to clarify that it depended on the tone of paint chosen as to which letter you needed but that the staff work that out once they input it into the system. I was pleased that the staff member was able to help and that I'd had some free time to browse the colours without interruption. I was also very pleased with the colour and impressed with how nice it is. As a former Dulux customer I was used to picking a colour and it not quite looking how I expected it to, but the Valspar paint looked exactly as it did on the colour card.

I decorated our bedroom. We have lived together for nine years and have never had a decorated bedroom - it's always been a room that gets forgotten about or is bottom of the list.

The first thing I noted about using the paint was that the tub was so easy to open and close. The paint poured out well and with a thicker consistency it didn't end up half way down the outside of the tin! I used the roller set and brush set provided with the paint. I know the feedback is not based on these items but I have some which I think is relevant. I found that for the coat of paint the roller shedded some of the foam. For every roll of paint that I applied I had to pick out pieces of roller, probably for most of the first application of one wall. This was annoying, although once the roller stopped shedding I was very pleased with the ease of use (for paint application) of the roller and the comfort of it. I was impressed with how easily the paint went on, which I assume was due to the thickness of the paint. Unlike other brands I found that it was much faster to paint with as it applied so well and incredibly quickly. With other brands when you apply the first coat you have to roller in the same area lots of times before doing the second coat, but I found that Valspar was genuinely only one coat on the first coat.

I would absolutely consider using Valspar paint again, although for larger spaces I would find it quite expensive to use. The quality of this paint is far superior than other brands I have used in the past. I had a friend over this morning who has just decorated her house and I told her about Valspar. I don't often recommended products to people but I did recommend it to her, although she had never heard of Valspar. I wonder if more advertising is needed as I also hadn't heard of Valspar until signing up to this trial.

Choosing the colour was fun but tricky, there are so many to choose from plus you can colour match which is great. I really enjoyed trying out the colours under the different lights and it helped a great deal as the room I am decorating is quite a dimly lit room. I was reasonably happy with the service in B&Q although the paint leaked out of the can immediately upon receipt and I asked the assistant if she could clean it for me as I didn't want paint in the car.
I have chosen a sunny colour called Apricot Macaron in a silk finish.

Which room did you decorate and why?
I'm decorating the dining room because it really needs it and it is a dreadful green colour that drains the light in an already dim room.

Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
I absolutely love the brush sets and the roller with tray as well as the paint. I really like the purple colour used on the tool sets. The prices are very reasonable for them too and they work really well. There were hardly any roller trays left in B&Q, but plenty of brushes.
The paint is great, low odour, goes on well and the coverage is fab. I would recommend all these products. The paint is not the cheapest you can purchase but if you want a product that is quick and easy to use, gas low odour and has great coverage then this is the paint for you.

Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes definitely, it is worth the money for the quality.

I sooo wish I never did this product test, has ended up being an expensive mistake.

  1. We chose from the colour rack and were very happy, liked the feature of viewing the paint in different lights, and the staff were chatty, helpful, and friendly. We chose milk and honey in matte finish.
  1. I attempted to decorate the small bedroom that will be our nursery as we are currently expecting and wanted to freshen the room before putting up the cot.
  1. We've moved a fair few times and have mostly always done our own decorating, using either B&Q's own paint or Dulux depending on our budget. This is without doubt the worst paint we've ever used. It dries sooo quickly and then pulls off big chunks of the part painted 5-7 seconds ago (literally - got someone to come and see to make sure I wasn't going insane) so was just impossible to evenly and thoroughly apply. It said the amount would do either a feature wall or one small room - this room is a teensy box room so we thought it would be no problem at all. But after one coat it's used over 3/4 of the paint and it looks like a bad primer has gone on and definitely needs at least 1 more coat but there isn't enough paint to do that - I should also mention we were only covering a light cream colour with a similar colour to freshen it up.
I would have resented having to buy another pot of the paint as it's so expensive but worse than that I can't have any more time off work and also don't want to breathe in fumes whilst pregnant all day again so we'll have to pay a professional to come and undo the damage this paint has done.
  1. Absolutely not!! For reasons outlined above. This product test was an expensive and regrettable mistake as what would have cost me £40 in supplies and a day off has now cost a day off plus wages of a decorator. Not happy at all and I was sooo happy and excited to decorate this room with 'special' paint Sad

1. How did you find choosing the colour?
We received excellent guidance from the member of staff serving us at the Valspar station, as this was our first time purchasing Valspar. He was really positive about the product and explained the benefits, such as it being hardwearing, which was good for us as we had chosen to paint our toddler's bedroom. We chose Magic Touch in a Matt finish.

2. Which room did you decorate and why?
We chose to decorate our daughter's bedroom, she is 2 and it was last painted 6 years ago when we moved in. We wanted to give the walls a clear update with a neutral colour. We were keen to try the Valspar paint due to its hardwearing qualities being particularly useful in a toddler room.

3. Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceiling Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
The paint was easy to apply. The container was easy to open. The roller felt good quality although it did shed some of the purple fluff onto the paint as we were using it. The tin stated that it covered 25m squared which was about right. We did two coats of the paint.

4. Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceiling Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Although the paint felt like a higher quality product and our overall experience was positive, the price of the paint is too much for us to justify the money. We enjoyed testing the product though and would recommend it for covering a small area.

We left the choice of the colour up to our four year old son as we are decorating his bedroom for his birthday. It's white at the moment with jungle animal stickers and it's altogether a bit 'nursery'. We took him to B and Q and he was delighted to be able to choose from all the colour on the chip rack. My husband and I agreed it would be his choice, so now we are proudly the owners of a tin of 'sporty pink' paint. It's has got to be the loudest pink I've ever seen. He loved watching the lady mix the paint and put it in the machine to shake it.
We are hoping to tackle painting his room at the weekend. So I will post before and after pics shortly.
I'm loving the claims that you can scrub it if needed. I have been know to end up rubbing the colour away when trying to get crayon off the wall before. If it is as tough as it says I think it'll be the paint of choice for our eldest room when we do his.

  1. Finding a colour was difficult and we did go with one from chip rack. The light box was useful, but I didn't find it very easy to choose a contrasting colour or suitable shade of white. Staff weren't very knowledgable about which whites were warm/cool and online resources were American shades so couldn't use that.
  1. We decorated the longest wall on our living room as an accent wall. It was just cream after we moved in. We wanted it to be bright and look nice with the grey sofa and white accessories.
  1. I love this paint. The coverage is excellent and the consistency is perfect. It doesn't stink at all!

(After picture to follow tomorrow when it's light...and tidier!!)

Finally done the second coat on our bedroom chimney breast. We love it so much we're going to do the opposite wall behind the head of the bed!

1. How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample? Were you happy with the colour of the paint and the service you received?

Choosing the colour was easy, we had a colour in mind and already had the Farrow and Ball tester card as their muted tones were probably what we were after. My husband actually purchased the paint because our little boy was unwell so I stayed home with him. The colour sampling process was easy and the staff member was helpful. They scanned straight from the Farrow and Ball tester card and we are delighted with the match. My husband was basically in and out of the paint department with no issues once he’d found someone to mix the paint. He did need some assistance with the vouchers at the till though, but all sorted easily by a senior member of staff.

2. Which room did you decorate and why?

We originally planned to use the Valspar v700 as the background colour for the mural we’ve painted in the children’s room, however we needed to paint that last weekend so chose our bedroom instead. We have swapped rooms with our daughter, giving the children the largest room to share but our budget has gone on painting a 3m x 2.5m mural in their room and buying new furniture as our DS was previous in a cot in our office. Our ‘new’ room was just a beige colour left from the previous owners, very plain and boring, and looked like we’d moved into the spare room. Painting our room was low on our priorities so we are delighted to have been able to give it a more adult feel and to make it much more ‘our’ room.

3. Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

Application was easy, it didn’t drip when using the brush or spray when using the roller. It definitely requires two coats, however it had a nice consistency and the odour wasn’t awful (and quickly dissipated).

4. Would you consider using Valspar Premium Blend v700 Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

I’d definitely use the Valspar Premium Blend v700 again. I’m delighted with the colour matching and also the appearance after two coats of paint. If it is as tough as the advert says it is, then it wins hands down for us. It was a nice consistency to paint with, went on easily and what seemed like a low odour was brilliant too. It’s a bit more tricky to get off skin when it’s dried though!

Some feedback on the roller and brushes
I found the roller looked great and the handle seemed like it would last a while. The grip was really comfortable and the rubbery bits helped keep it firmly in my hand despite standing at the very top of our ladder to reach the coving. The roller did leave lots of bubbles when applying the paint, this was quite annoying and added a bit of extra time to the job. I wouldn’t buy another Valspar roller unfortunately and if I wasn’t testing it, I would have swapped it out for other rollers we have.

The paint brushes were excellent. I had lots of edges to paint and this really was a breeze. I only used the smallest size but I think we’ll get lots of use out of them. I’ve only lost one bristle so far and it didn’t come off on the wall.

I found choosing the colour hard as there was so much choice, however I liked the idea of the light boxes to test. The staff were very helpful. The only downside has been the lack of rollers - I've been twice and they are out of stock.

  1. Which room did you decorate and why?
I decided to decorate my room which was my daughter's and has dark and light blue walls. It's the box room and therefore small so I chose a light pink to brighten up the room.

I should be starting to paint tomorrow as I'm working today.

We chose a colour from the rack, which was difficult due to vast amount of colours available. The assistant that served us was helpful and knowledgeable and sorted out the paint efficiently. It was so interesting to see how the paint is put together.

I painted my dinning room as it was looking very tired and grubby and I wanted something warmer.

The paint went on really well and even after just one coat looked really good. I was pleased I didn't have to wait too long to do the second coat. I would definitely use the paint again, as even though it is more expensive than what I usually use, the quality looks much better and I should be able to wipe off grubby hand prints quite easierly without taking off the paint.

Thank you for giving me the chance to test the paint, as I don't think I would have ever brought it otherwise.
