Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
A: Yes. We think AB’s “Homestyle Oven chips” are the best oven chips.
Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
A: They were OK. Not a patch on homemade (what is?). My 9 yr old daughter said they were like “a fat round version of the chips”. I agreed.
Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
A: They tasted OK. But just like the Homestyle chips – but more fluffy inside.
Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
A: There is no comparison to home made roast potatoes. No brand of frozen roasties would ever compare. They’ve got to be plonked in hissing boiling fat in a pan to be yummy.
Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
A: I would possibly recommend for a kids meal. But not for a full-on proper family roast dinner. It’s cheating!
Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
A: Unlikley. Making your own is worth the hassle

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test? yes, but had not bought them
Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes? Nice looking, golden and crunchy.
Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes? 7/10 - nice and crunchy on the outside, slightly odd taste on the inside.
Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase? Good shape and smell, I tend to make my potatoes smaller.
Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not? I would recommend them as they are convenient and crunchy. They are expensive in comparison to buying potatoes and making your own. Might be worth it in terms of convenience.
Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes? Fairly likely

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

I was aware Aunt Bessie did frozen roast potatoes and vegetable but not the Homestyle range in particular.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

We were all quite impressed by these potatoes. Our expectations were very low as previous frozen roast potatoes have been disgusting but we all enjoyed these.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

They were not as tasty as home made ones but as a substitute they were good, so I would rate them quite highly.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

Compared to other frozen roast potatoes these were definitely the best we have tasted. They were lovely and soft inside and they had a nice outside to them too. Not as nice as ones I make, however as a convenience I would definitely use these for mid week meals.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would be happy to recommend these potatoes.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

I will definitely purchase these again as they are handy to have in the freezer and make a nice accompaniment to a quick mid week dinner. I will also look out for the frozen roast parsnips as I find roasting parsnips a faff and if they are as good as the homestyle roast potatoes I will be happy!

suewrightx · 15/03/2016 17:38

I knew of them but never tried them.

They looked good but we were disappointed as they weren't very crispy.

The shape and aroma was excellent.

I don't think I would recommend them but ok to use in an emergency or hurry.

I always do my own roast potatoes but would use these as a last resort

SilverShins · 15/03/2016 17:44

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

I'd heard of them, probably from the TV.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

Pretty tasty. They looked good and we're fluffy inside. My daughter can be rather picky but she lapped these up.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

Not as good as home cooked on the whole but quick and practical when time is tight.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

I personally preferred them to the McCain ones we'd had previously. But as I said, not as good as home made.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would. I think they have their place and roast potatoes are nice to have more than just when one has lots of time to get them ready.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

I would certainly get them again. My daughter loves them.

ema3 · 15/03/2016 17:50

I was aware of Aunt Bessie's frozen potatoes before. Have seen the adverts for them on the television and in magazines for years. I thought they were generally very good value and so easy to use! The taste was fine, everyone soon finished their plates! No complaints! Very good to have in the freezer as a back-up. Good value for money and I would recommend them to friends and family. I would buy them again!

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
If I was buying frozen roast potatoes i might buy them. I'd still be more likely to make my own, but if I didn't have time then they'd be a good backup

smkmum · 15/03/2016 20:00

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test? Yes, I was and we probably used them a few ago but not recently as we weren't that keen on them. Our freezer is quite small and I didn't think they were worth the space. We found them dry and not very tasty.
Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes? We ate them tonight (3 of us) and all liked them. They were better than we expected. Maybe they aren not the brand we had before or maybe they have improved from when we used to have them.
Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes? They tasted nice and we enjoyed them. I don't think they are anything like a 'real roast' potato in terms of the taste and texture.
Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase? The shape was good but I wouldn't say that there was much of a smell.
Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not? I would recommend them for people who would like something quick and easy to go in the oven. Also, ideal for getting out if you are just cooking for 1 or 2.
Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes? I might buy them to have as a 'standby' in the freezer.

Ihatefootball · 15/03/2016 20:15
  1. Yes I had heard of them and bought them before. They are a well recognised brand.
  2. I expected them to be good and they were. I would say they do need cooking for the full amount of time stated. They are not nice if you get them out five minutes early, like I did with one lot. They definitely taste artificial then.
  3. They were all the same size, quite small, which I liked.
  4. I would recommend them. They are tasty and a reasonable price!
  5. I would buy them again, they are nice!
chrissie66 · 15/03/2016 20:34

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
Yes, I was aware of these Aunt Bessie's frozen potatoes but had never tried them.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
I thought that these frozen potatoes are a good alternative to the real thing, particulary when time is limited. However, they are nowhere near as tasty. I cooked for longer than the stated time for extra crispness.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
The taste is okay but definitely not as good as homemade.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
The shape was fine but the aroma was nothing special. If I was given the choice I would still prefer homemade.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend to family/friends as they are great as an addition to a quick midweek meal.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
It's likely that I will keep a bag of these frozen potatoes in the freezer as they are a great timesaving alternative to the real thing.

Q1. I was aware of Aunt Bessie's frozen potatoes but not 'Homestyle'.
Q2. I was happy with them, I fed my whole family for a mother's day roast and everyone was happy.

Q3. In terms of shape and aroma, I enjoyed these equally as much as others I've used.

ILikeBigBumpsAndICannotLie · 15/03/2016 21:59

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
A. Yes, I was.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
A. Not sure they are good enough. There weren't enough angles on the potatoes to give the extra crispy bits you get with home made roasties. The coating gave them an artificial taste. I can see how having a bag in the freezer would be handy, if you don't generally cook, these would be a good product to have, but I don't think they replace home made.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes
A. They are ok, not terrible but not right I don't think.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
A. They smelt nice whilst cooking, they were very rounded and uniform in size. As above the lack of angles meant they didn't have the variance in crispiness that make roast potatoes so delicious, imo.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
A. Yes for the convenience of being able to cater for people unexpectedly or to bulk out an existing meal, but they aren't that much quicker to cook, nor tastier to make it worth replacing a bag of potatoes. I was surprised at how expensive they are too. I like cooking though, but I can see the appeal if you don't like it or don't know how to.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
A. Unlikely, but I wouldn't say never.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 15/03/2016 22:36

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
I think I had noticed them in passing. I don't often buy roast potatoes, prefer to make my own
Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
They came out a lovely golden brown colour. Only negative would be the size, they were all very small!
Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
I did find them quite tasty.
Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
As above, they were all very small. I would normally use big potatoes and serve a few bigger ones each. With these, I think we used the whole bag for a family of 4 as they were on the smaller size.
Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think I would as we did enjoy them.
Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
For quickness yes but I do prefer to make my own!

MrsRhiT · 15/03/2016 23:02

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

No I wasn't aware of them.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

I was quite impressed. They were nice golden colour, easy to cook and tasted good. They could have been a little crispier on the outside.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

I thought they were really tasty. Nice and fluffy on inside.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

I normally make my own which take a lot longer so these are a fab alternative when I want a quick dinner.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would definitely recommend as they are quick to cook and tasty.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

I am very likely to buy these again. I think they are going
to make my life a little easier on sundays.

teamnomistake · 16/03/2016 06:40

Q1 Yes I was aware. I use other Aunt Bessie products (Yorkshire puds) and I've seen positive reviews of them on here before (usually people posting about how to make easy roast/Xmas dinners) I was pleased to have a reason to try them.

Q2. They looked good, were a uniform size and browned nicely. Less hassle and time than making my own roasties. The kids ate them and said they were great

Q3. The taste was quite nice. Not amazing, not bad. The skin being coated in batter was a bit weird, I agree with pp who've compared them with oven wedges.

Q4 The shape was more uniform than home made potatoes. The aroma was ok. If I'm making home made roasties I'll add salt and pepper and garlic which makes them smell lovely, so these were a bit lacking in comparison.

Q5 I would recommend these for the convenience. They are an easy way of having fairly nice roasties.

Q6 I can see me buying these every so often and keeping a bag in the freezer as an easy go to option. I have young kids so can't just pop out in the evening and having a well stocked freezer helps. For a Sunday dinner way or special occasion I would keep on making my own.

Weemargaret · 16/03/2016 16:39

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

Yes, I realised once we received the coupons that we have bought them before quite a few times.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
Everyone in my family enjoyed them a lot. I find them quite different from the majority of roast potatoes on sale. I love how crispy they are and the inside always cooks well, unlike a lot of other roast potatoes I have tried that stay quite hard in the middle.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
I think the taste is lovely and they are the closest to home-made roast potatoes I have found, which is why we have bought them in the past quite a few times. Everyone in my house finished them all anyway!

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
I didn't notice an aroma while cooking but we had quite a few different items of food cooking so the smells were all mixed together. They are all quite an even size so they cooked evenly, we didn't have a problem with some overcooking while others were undercooked.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I don't know if I would remember the specific name of the product but I would probably recommend Aunt Bessie's as a brand as I tend to like almost all of their products and buy them frequently.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
We will continue to buy these roast potatoes as I have not found ones so crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I have been disappointed by many other brands of roast potatoes and I am happy with these so will probably stick with them. The price is also good value so that is another reason to make repeat purchases.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of this product panel!

Janey50 · 16/03/2016 17:32
  1. Yes I was aware of them before this product test.
  2. They looked a nice colour, were fairly uniform in size and there was a decent amount in one bag, enough for 2 greedy
    and 2 not-so-greedy adults.
  3. I would describe their taste as perfectly acceptable, the drawback being the slightly powdery/salty aftertaste that they left.
Also,I thought the outsides of them a little harder than homemade, although the insides were quite fluffy.
  4. Compared to homemade roast potatoes, the shape of them made it quite obvious that they were not homemade. The ones that I make are a little rougher around the edges,do not look so smooth. As for the aroma, again, they did not smell like homemade ones, although they did smell nice.
  5. I would probably recommend them if it came up in conversation as they are a perfectly acceptable time-saving substitute for
    homemade roast potatoes.
  6. I would quite likely consider buying a them again as a weekday meal time saver. But I would continue to make my own for Sunday roasts/special occasions.
