Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
Not a clue.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
They were quite good - better than I thought they would be. Quite tasty really. I ate more than I should have. The children, strangely, were less keen.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
They were tasty - but I think that comes form caramel, which I would never put on home cooked ones.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
Good shape - smaller than what I would have a normal roastie. Smell I didn't really notice. Seemed comparable to regular ones - except out regular ones are much more oily.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend them. It does take the faff out of preparing roasts - parboiling, rolling in flour etc. This is so unbelievably simple. They don't taste as good though - not crunchy enough on outside and the inside was a little too dry for my liking. But as a an addition to a non full roast meal, I think these do the job. Easy to keep them on tap in freezer, throw them in the oven and that's it.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
I would keep a pack in the fridge for certain meals when we are not, literally almost, going the whole hog. If doing the whole hog, then I think one should also do the potatoes from scratch and then avoid the palm oil.

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
Yes. I knew they did them
Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
Sadly not as good as I thought they would be..I will use them again but leave them in longer than the stated time as I think that would make them crispier...nothing can replace the real thing, home prepared and cooked but this is quite a good subsitute.
Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
A very nice taste mixed well with the other items in my roast dinner.
Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase? Sadly, not quite as good. Although the size was ideal.
Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes. I would recommend them,as its a good quick way for roasties but they didn't really stand out as being so very different from the others on the market.
Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
Yes. I would buy them as they were quick and easy ideal if you are in a hurry and the taste was good.

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

No, not soecifically, although I was vaguely aware you could buy ready made roast potatoes.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

Reasonable taste, a bit small, very easy.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

My husband, my daughter and I liked them, although they were slightly drier than home-made ones. My son did not like them at all and said they tasted wrong.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

They were smaller than usual, but smelt good.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

If domeone is looking for a quick and easy option, and doesn't have fussy kids, then yes.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

Unlikely as my son won't eat them.

FrootLoops · 11/03/2016 17:20

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

No, but after the test I found out that MIL has served them up before.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

I really liked these. Just crispy enough, fluffy and buttery inside and not greasy at all.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

10/10

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

I am terrible at making roasties; DH is the cook in our house but I have to say these beat his on taste and consistently turned out well.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. For lack of effort and time without sacrificing taste.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

I will definitely buy them again.

JulesJules · 11/03/2016 17:29

Q1 Were you aware of Aunt Bessies Roast potatoes before testing?
Vaguely - I knew you could get frozen roast potatoes, but never bought them or looked for them while shopping.
Q4 Would you recommend
Yes I would.
Q2 Overall impression
Pleasantly surprised, taste and texture a lot better than I was expecting. The children really liked them too. Could have been a bit crispier - next time I'll whack the heat up a bit. Not as nice as home made but so much less faff!
Q3 Shape and aroma
Fine, bit smaller than homemade but that's ok
Q5 How likely are you to buy
Very likely. We all liked them, and I see it as a good standby to have in the freezer. I think I'd use them more as an alternative to oven chips than replacing home made roast potatoes which we mainly do as part of a roast dinner.

gazzalw · 11/03/2016 18:43

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
Yes because PIL use them instead of home-made roasties now...

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
Good substitute if not improvement on the real thing depending on what potatoes are used for home-made ones.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
I'd give them a 7/10. Better than some but not as good as Lidl ones (sorry Blush)

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
They were very uniformly sized, not overly roast potato smelling. They offered consistency that is not always present in home-made ones which vary wildly depending on what type of potatoes have been used...

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I think they're a great freezer standby TBQH but I'm not sure I would entirely give on on making them myself.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
If I needed to make a roast lunch with minimal effort/time (and I couldn't get to Lidl), I would buy them certainly.

Cashncarry · 11/03/2016 21:19

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

I was aware that Aunt Bessie did frozen roasties but not of the "home style" label

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

Nice but nowhere near as crispy as home made

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

Very moreish taste-wise which I put down to the coating which made them taste like posh oven chips. My kids loved them - however our play date friend did not!

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

I liked the different shapes and sizes and the smell was definitely good.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'd probably recommend them someone who likes frozen roasties and who particularly wants the easier option.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

Unlikely - I'm not a food snob by any stretch of the imagination but these took 40 mins to cook in the oven and then I put them under the grill as they looked a bit pasty and underdone. So from a time saving point of view, they were no quicker than my usual parboil and bung in the oven. Plus I missed the crispness of home made.

mummyeme · 12/03/2016 10:04

Q1:
I wasn't aware of Aunt Bessie's Frozen Roast Potatoes before taking part in this trial.
Q2:
I think these are great, tasted delicious and were definitely appealing to look at. The convenience is a real bonus too, when I don't have the time to roast potatoes myself.
Q3:
These were a good size, so roasted well and tasted delicious. They had a great aroma and added to the whole homely feeling of a roast dinner. In terms of convenience they were great and tasted nice with lamb chops which cook far more quickly.
I'm not always successful at roasting potatoes which are delicious every time so nice to have something consistent.
Q4:
I would recommend these if it came up in conversation as they were convenient, and reliably delicious.
Q5:
I would definitely buy these in future.

Tonkatol · 12/03/2016 14:40

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

I was aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before but hadn’t bought them because my DC particularly like home-cooked roast potatoes.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

They are ok as a quick addition to a meal but my DC really weren’t keen on them. DD aged 16 would normally eat as many roast potatoes as allowed but she didn’t even finish those I had put on her plate. Also, when opening the pack, there were a number of smallish potatoes and then one or two large ones (see attached photo - at back, one potato is about three times thesize of other potatoes).

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

DD aged 16 would normally eat as many roast potatoes as allowed but she didn’t even finish those I had put on her plate. She said they had a “vinegary” taste, the outer coating was hard, rather than crispy and the inside was too fluffy. Overall she was very disappointed with them. My other DC ate them but didn’t find them as tasty as homemade roast potatoes. My DH and I thought they were “ok” but definitely had a different taste to our homemade roast potatoes.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

As mentioned above, most of the potatoes were quite small, but roughly the same size; although there were a couple of potatoes much larger than all the others. The aroma was different to normal roasts - a stronger smell but not as nice as homemade roast potatoes.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Probably not - I didn’t think the price was too bad for the size of the bag, but I would rather spend half the money on a bag of regular potatoes and cook for myself. As a family, we really enjoy roast potatoes as part of our roast dinner but there were a number I needed to clear from the plates at the end of the meal, so I wouldn’t bother buying them again.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

Very unlikely - it would be a waste of my money as my children definitely wouldn’t eat them. I would only buy them if I was looking for a quick accompaniment to a meal for my husband and I.

Not as good as my homemade ones, but for a quick and easy alternative they were great. Decent aroma made them appealing.

Definitely for mid week meal or if rushed for Sunday roast. They won't replace homemade but are a good supplement or alternative.

Wend1 · 12/03/2016 15:00

Q1. Yes I was aware that Aunt Bessie's made roast potatoes
Q2. My overall impression of Aunt Bessie's roast potatoes was really good. They were so much better than I had expected. Have used frozen potatoes in the past but always found them disappointing. These were so much better. Really handy to have a pack in the freezer for a quick meal.
Q3. The shape was like any homemade roast potato and the aroma was also the same. Filled the house with the lovely smell of traditional roast potatoes.
Q4. I would definitely recommend them. So convenient and handy to have and so much quicker than making from scratch.

  1. I knew they existed but not this particular brand

  2. overall impressions were that they looked good - they would certainly be acceptable as an alternative in the week. I would still do my own potatoes at the weekend as I like to use the fat from the meat to add flavour - not sure that would work with these

  3. They tasted a bit grainy inside and the outsides weren't crispy enough for my taste. Had to quite heavily season them myself

  4. shape was quite uniform - which u found a bit odd as I like the variation in size of home made - some crisp up more than others. Not the case with these. Smelt quite good and size wise, they were cut about right

  5. yes probably recommend as a mid week quick alternative

  6. for me, I probably wouldn't buy them regularly as I prefer the taste and flavour of my own potatoes. Good to have in the freezer for an emergency though

ButtonMoonLoon · 12/03/2016 20:09
  1. Yes, I was aware of them
  2. They were OK, but that was all. Not as nice as home made ones and they really varied in size making it difficult cooking time wise as the small ones were really small meaning that they cooked a lot quicker than the others.
  3. They looked and smelled nice
  4. I wouldn't, to be honest, based on my response in point 2. Also, they didn't taste as nice as home made ones, my daughter loves roast potatoes but wasn't keen on these. A lot of gravy was needed to give them enough flavour.
  5. As a quick fix if I'd run out of potatoes or time to make my own, but otherwise I would be unlikely to buy them again.
Ladylucky99 · 12/03/2016 20:12

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test? No I wasn't, I use other products made by Aunt Bessies but I wasn't aware of the potatoes as I have stuck to the same for years

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes? Delicious! So much easier than making them from scratch and yet cooked from frozen tasted delicious. As described they were indeed crispy on the outside and fluffy and light on the inside

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes? I was very impressed by the taste, they were the sort of taste you would expect from roast potatoes on a Christmas dinner, not a few frozen potatoes chucked in the oven for 35 minutes.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase? When I make my own they end up alsorts of shapes and colours and with some burnt while other undercooked. Another frozen brand I have used, we find them quite dry on the inside so I have to say I'm very impressed and I will certainly be purchasing these again and I hope to use them for big occasions as I just cant compete with these

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I certainly would recommend them. I haven't a negative thing to say about the potatoes. The whole family loved them

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes? Very likely, infact they are on my shopping list

ygtbiitwi · 12/03/2016 20:38

Q1. I knew about them.
Q2. They tasted as good as freshly made roast potatoes.
Q3. I'd rate them at 10 out of 10.
Q3. They were better in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes I make or purchase.
Q4. Yes I would
Q5. I would put them at the top of my list.

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
I had heard of them.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
We all really enjoyed them. I am very fussy about my roast potatoes and especially enjoyed these - very good texture and taste. My husband said that although home roasted are the best, these come a close second!

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
Lovely taste, not powdery. Light and fluffy.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
The shape was good, although a little smaller than we would make our home roasted potatoes. They cooked evenly and pleasant aroma.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would as a quicker alternative to home roasted.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
Yes would definitely buy them.

  1. I was aware of Aunt Bessies Roast potatoes having seen a TV advert.
  2. My overall impression was good .My family liked the taste and appearance of the potatoes. Not as crispy as my own but still enjoyed them.
  3. They were quite a uniform shape fluffy texture inside. Didn't really detect an aroma from them.
  4. Yes I would recommend them I think they are ideal for a quick mid-week roast.
  5. Yes I will be buying them again as we all enjoyed them and for me they saved so much time great for a busy working mum.

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

I was aware of them

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

Pleasant alternative to home made

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

Tasted nice

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

They were smaller than what I would make - can't really comment on aroma as we had them with a full roast dinner

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, they were nice to eat, easy to cook, good value for money (1 bag fed 7 adults and 3 kids as part of a full roast dinner) and most importantly were GLUTEN, DAIRY & EGG free which ticked all the allergy boxes at the table

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

Very likely if convenience wins over time when preparing a family meal

Thornrose · 13/03/2016 09:34

Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
Yes, I'd seen them next to the Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire puds.
Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
I was a bit surprised by the variation in size! Some very small and some very big!
Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
They tasted nice but they just didn't taste as good as "proper" roast potatoes. My dd liked them, she said "they're nice but not like proper roast potatoes."
Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
As mentioned earlier the sizes varied too much for my liking and were generally a bit too small.
Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
My family and friends are pretty traditional and our roast dinners are a big deal. I can't imagine anyone buying ready made roasts. However my teenage dd loved them I will be getting them for her and cooking them mid week as they are very convenient.
Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
See above!

Overall impressions were very good, looked quite nice and brown

I was most surprised as I expected them to be be hard and pretty tasteless. Not as good as home made roasties but they were quite tasty

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
Very uniform in size which was good for even cooking. Smell was tasty, although as stated before, not as good as home made

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend as I will definately consider buying them due to less dishes/pots to wash and time convenience!

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
Very likely!

Uneasypeasy · 13/03/2016 12:29

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

No, wasn't aware of them

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

For a quick fix, they were OK, but nowhere near as nice as homemade and I think the trade off of effort to get the improved taste of homemade is probably worth it.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?

They tasted OK to me and DD. The outside coating wasn't to DH's taste at all though.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

They smelled lovely in the oven - and were fine shape wise, but really small compared to what we'd usually have.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

If they were looking for convenience, then yes. They taste OK and cooked quickly with little effort.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?

I'd probably just continue buying raw potatoes and roasting them myself. Since we'd usually have them with roast dinner, everything else takes just as long to cook so no cooking time really saved.

AddictedtoGreys · 13/03/2016 13:43

Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?

Very good.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?

I would if they didn't mind smaller potatoes.

If I had to buy frozen I would buy these.

luckymoo91 · 13/03/2016 14:00

I have just tried these yummy roast potatoes! Here is my feedback: (i have already completed the survey also)

Q1. Were you aware of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes before taking part in this product test?
No i usually make my own and have never tried any frozen roast potatoes before

Q2. What were your overall impressions of Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
Look an even size, good amount of coating and plenty in the bag to feed my family of four.

Q3. In terms of taste, how would you rate Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes?
I would give them 4/5 for the taste. I would prefer them to be a bit more crispy on the outside.

Q3. How did you find Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes in terms of shape and aroma, compared to typical roast potatoes you make/purchase?
The shape was perfect! I think if they were slightly crispier on the outside then they really would be as good as home-made.

Q4. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I already have! I shared my thoughts with friends on social media, and my mother-in-law has purchased and tried them based on my recommendation.

Q5. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing Aunt Bessie’s Homestyle frozen roast potatoes if you were in need of roast potatoes?
I plan to purchase them as part of my monthly shop. They are very handy to have in the freezer to finish off midweek meals when we are running out of time.

Thanks for the chance to try something new Mumsnet!

originalmavis · 13/03/2016 14:05

We tried bag 2 last night. Again DS liked them but I found them stodgy and not very crispy. He had been scoffing the bowl of leftovers today and has declared them 'lovely' (and better one day old and cold).
