~ How easy or difficult did you find the ointment to use? Was it easy to rub in or not? Was it easy to work out how much you should use or not?
I found the cream very easy to use, the instructions were very clear. It was a lovely feeling cream and glided on to the skin easily without having to excessively rub it in.
I did like others find that a pea sized amount was quite a lot for my tiny newborn but I also tested this on my 8 year old (incontinent due to special needs) and a pea sized amount was perfect so obviously it depends on the size if the child as to how much you need.
~ How often and when did you use the ointment?
I used it at every nappy change. For my newborn daughter this was approximately every 3-4 hours and for my 8 year old son this was approximately every 5-6 hours except at night time.
~ How effective (or not) do you think the ointment was at preventing nappy rash? Did your DC's skin feel any softer after using the ointment or not?
On my newborn daughter I did not notice much difference in her skin but at the start of trialing this product she was rash free and had lovely soft skin so an improvement would have been hard to see. However she did not develop a rash during the trial so had no reaction to the cream at all.
My 8 year old son however has very rough and sore skin on his bottom and has sensitive skin so is very prone to nappy rash. I found using the cream made a huge improvement to the softness of his skin and when used in conjunction with my son's regular nappy rash treatment cream the rash cleared up and has so far stayed away which is amazing. I definately think it helps prevent rash.
~ Which, if any, barrier product did you use before? How did Metanium Everyday ointment compare to this?
I did not use an everyday cream prior to this trial but have used Sudocream and Metanium treatment cream previously to treat nappy rash as it appears. I did really like the Metanium everyday cream as prevention is clearly better than cure and I much prefer to stop a rash developing rather than treating the rash once it arrives.
I also found that the cream worked much better than Sudocream as it is thiner and easier to glide on. Sudocream is very thick and can be difficult to apply. I have also in the past found that Sudocream stops the nappy from absorbing urine properly (especially with cloth nappies) and it has in the past stained and ruined my cloth nappies, Metanium everyday cream did not have this problem at all. It is perfect to use along with cloth nappies and did not reduce the absorbation whatsoever, even without a liner when I forgot to use one!
~ What did you think about the packaging? Do you think it could be improved in any way?
The packaging is ok, nothing amazing but nothing to offend. It dosn't stand out much so could be easily missed on a shelf when shopping. While I liked the fact the cream came in a tube I would prefer a studier tube as not keen on metal tubes as they crack easily.
I also think a flip top lid (such as you get on toothpaste) would be much more convienient as it was difficult trying to hold a child still whilst unscrewing the lid and the lid is so small it could be easily lost / swallowed by a child. A flip top lid would allow you to apply the cream one handed.
~ If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Metanium Everyday to other parents? If so why, if not why not?
Yes I would recomend the cream, especially to other parents of older special needs children as I know from experiance older children's rash can be much harder to deal with and there is not as many products out there.
The price would obviously be an important consideration. As this is an everyday cream I can imagine going through an awful lot of it, especially with older children and / or multiple children so if the price makes this too expensive it would be a different matter.
I think making a larger sized product would be very beneficial also, perhaps a smaller 'changing bag' size and a larger sized product for at home meaning that it would be better value.
I for one will certainly be looking out for it when it hits the shops shelves as nothing has helped my son's skin like this has.
