I bloody love a nice hotel. What is your favourite hotel you’ve stayed in?

Mine would be:
Crowne Plaza Changi (Singapore) and got upgraded to the roof terrace suite. Absolutely loved it.
The Langham Hong Kong and stayed in the junior suite!

Shangri-La at the Shard in London. It was incredible. I still cry when I think about it.
Next stop the Sistine Chapel?

Cipriani in Venice. After a few days there, we came home on the Orient Express.

The Cipriani is fabulous - our room had hand-painted classical scenes on the walls, a bathroom you could hold a disco in and its own private garden. The bathroom was full of luscious potions (obviously, being common we brought them all home with us) and there was a dish of Belgian chocs in our room that they replenished every day. They have a private motor launch to take you to and from the Giudecca to St Marks, operating 24 hours a day and the driver wears a captain's hat and calls you 'La bella signora'. I could go on...

Dean Street Townhouse when it had just opened. I think we got room 10 which had a bath in the main room.
Burgh Island - we had the huge suite with two bathrooms - amazing place!
Inn at Sonoma in California - not a huge fancy place by any stretch but incredible service, lovely rooms, terrific breakfasts, and a wonderful location.

Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui, Hawaii. The setting alone takes your breath away.

Any recommendations for Latin America?

  • in particular Argentina, Chile, Peru
Simbacatisback · 07/07/2021 18:19

I have stayed in very many of these hotels over the years. Lockdown makes you think about where you want to be and I have decided that it isnt Aman, Jumeriah, Conrad, Four Seasons, IC. I used to spend 200 nights year in hotels around the world and miss it

For me

The Hotel Emma in San Antonio

and not at all luxurious

Union Bluff at York Beach in Maine.

(Al Bustan was awful- cant see why so many people liked it- we decamped back to the Chedi)

Wow. Some great career people here.
I've had 2 nights in a Novotel in Edinburgh

Starisnotanumber · 07/07/2021 18:36

Storrs Hall Windermere views are amazing.
Britania in Lisbon Portugal.
Emperador on Grand Via Madrid
Grand Villa Politi in Sicily.
Like a bit of faded grandeur with luxury touches

@StCharlotte
Please please ask your friends who worked as " mystery guests " what their recommendations would be and let us know.

Ballyfin in Ireland ( at a wedding ) so had the house to ourselves.
Hotel Europe Killarney - views of the Lakes of Killarney.
Yacht Club Disney Florida. We so needed that break with dc. We all loved it.
New York Palace at Christmas. Magical with snow falling. The room was ok.
Capri Palace - didn't stay , just had a light lunch. Gorgeous.
When I win the lottery I'm going back.

Portmeirion. Not just beautiful architecture in a lovely part of Wales, but very well looked after and lovely room.

Peace43 · 07/07/2021 18:50

The Leela Palace Bangalore. Was beautiful!

zyd32 · 07/07/2021 18:55

I also stayed in the Yacht Club at Disney. My wally of a son managed to drop his new phone in the lake there. Not only did the lovely manager get out his extendable gripper tool, he upgraded us for free to club level and a new room and got the boat out with some kind of diver thing while we were out.

Complete legend. The phone remains at the bottom of the lake but my son likes to point out the upgrade would have cost more than the phone (they certainly took advantage of the free food and drink all day in the lounge). I was more put out that my carefully planned park timetable for the day was ruined (and I turned into that fun sponge). But service way beyond what we expected.

Shangri-La at the Shard. Amazing room, amazing staff, amazing food! We loved it.

ShinyMe · 07/07/2021 19:08

The hotel I enjoyed the most was one in Jackson Hole, Wyoming one autumn. We drove up from Salt Lake City, hadn't booked anywhere, and ended up there. It was just fab, the staff were so friendly and welcoming without being ott or fake/cheesy (which we have found in some US hotels). The disabled facilities were superb. And the lovely friendly lady on reception did cpr on someone having a heart attack in reception one morning, saved his life.

Four seasons for Buenos Aries, Copacabana Palace for Rio, both outstanding

Jealous. What jobs do you all have that you travel to such swanky places? Grin

DearTeddyRobinson · 07/07/2021 19:34

The Peninsula Hong Kong. Amazing rooms, views, service. When I die I want to go there!
Four Seasons Hong Kong. Amazing pool with view over the harbour and the loveliest staff.
The Bale, Nusa Dua, Bali. Private, beautiful, serene.
Ritz Carlton Singapore. Especially the cocktails in the lobby bar.
The G Hotel, Galway. We arrived totally frazzled and stressed with an 18 month old. They were so helpful, sorted an early kids dinner for DC, gave us a massive and beautiful room, and sorted a babysitter so DH and I could relax over dinner later.
The Soho Grand New York. Went about 20 years ago when it was very new and was blown away. Returned 10 years later and it seemed a bit shabby, and I'd forgotten how small NY hotel rooms are! But still pretty cool and great location.

Not posh, but stayed in a room on stilts on the Island of Koh Chang. Cold outdoor showers, no electricity, golden retriever who was evefyonesbest friend as the host. 20 second walk onto the most perfect, deserted beach.....apart from a family who lived in a hut on the beach and cooked the most incredible food.
Sitting in the pitch dark, listening to the sounds of the sea, eating delicious food and downing Tiger beers knocks spots off the luxury hotels I have stayed in. We'll, one in Singapore was stunning, but as we paid circa £10 a night in Koh Chang, true luxury 🙂

I do love a mandarin oriental, however my favourite place in the entire world is Dwarikas Resort in Dhulikhel, Nepal.

Brainwave89 · 07/07/2021 19:48

The Taj Garden Hotel in Bangalore. My own butler for two weeks, nothing was too much trouble, the food was fantastic, and I had a great time.
