To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

My husband couldn't understand why I was watching 'Last Tango in Halifax' but I loved it, along with a good home made cheese scone.

1forAll74 · 20/06/2020 18:30

Well yes, good for you. I am an oldie, (78). I don't say I am buying old lady stuff though, just good quality stuff, that has been around for many years. I buy quite a lot of Yardley stuff. and Taylor of London talcs etc.
I still use Vosene shampoo, which I used when I was about 16.

I am just miffed now, as you can't get the little tins of proper germolene ointment, just the cream stuff now which is no good,
Proper Germolene ointment was fantastic, and would heal things very quickly. I believe that there was some ingredient in it, that failed modern standards these days.

I saw a few small tins on ebay once, and the asking price was £40 for one tin. !

Anything lavender or rose scented. Bar soaps. Having 'best' - tablecloths, cake slicer, crystal glassware. Setting things out nicely for guests. Some of this I have grown fond of as I get older and remember the ways of my Greek Grandmother. I am very early 40's.

Hopefullysmart · 20/06/2020 18:41

Pearls, soap, talc, big pants Grin

Sheets and blankets, rather than a duvet - so much easier to adjust the temperature; you are never too hot or too cold (this one drives my partner mad - he's not a fan of blankets).

And since this is style and beauty - clip-on earrings.

EvilPea · 20/06/2020 18:47

I love my electric blanket. My cardigans
And a walk round a garden centre.

I'm 38 and just purchased flat EXTRA WIDE FIT leather summer shoes. Something I have always associated with my Nan, who is 94!

However, I can't tell you how much my feet are thanking me for this revelation.

I Spent 5yrs in my early 20's wearing 4inch stilettos everyday to my office job. Got blisters all the time and sore feet. I could shake younger me.

Bubbletrouble43 · 20/06/2020 19:05

Oh wow I've found my people
I love
Lavender anything
Fenjal products
All itv 3 dramas esp poirot more etc
Woman's weekly ( my mum passes it on to me)
Cardigans
A blanket over my lap when I'm watching my crime dramas on telly
I've been like this since I was about 19

SerendipitySunshine · 20/06/2020 19:05

Younger me wore uncomfortable shoes and underwear for years. Why did I do it? Love the sound of Germolene ointment.

Sherry and port are due a revival. My grandma drank peaty island single malt whisky. I am tempted to buy a bottle.

ArbitraryNameChange · 20/06/2020 19:06

This is the thread for me. You are my people....

simplificate · 20/06/2020 19:07

Yes to so many of these! 90s teen so teadresses, cardigans, knitting and tweeds were gateway drugs for my friends and me. Even if Gen Z are trying to pretend cottagecore is their thing Wink

Speaking of Sewing Bee, I coveted that winceyette nightie bloomer thing one of the contestants made far more than any of the slinky lingerie sets!

Cornishandnotaprick · 20/06/2020 19:08

I aspire to being like you.

This ALL sounds heavenly. I’m 34

Thank you for helping me find myself FlowersCake

I’ve never even worn purple before!! Grin

I don't say I am buying old lady stuff though, just good quality stuff, that has been around for many years.
Very good point.

Tablecloths
Antimacassars
Darning mushrooms
Trousers presses
What these represent for me isn't just nostalgia but that culture of saving up to buy the best you can afford - be it clothes, furniture , whatever - and then looking after it as best you can.

And also cotton embroidered handkerchieves in flat, square boxes - so classy.

Cornishandnotaprick · 20/06/2020 19:10

Please send me a link to the crossy over bras!! ❤️

Jezebel101 · 20/06/2020 19:13

This is going to be cathartic (or possibly confessional).

Long time Agatha Christie fan. Started as a teen.
Electric blankets are made by the gods.
I have a china teaset. I have a china butter dish. I have a whistling kettle. I feel no shame about any of that.
I have a neck problem, so I have nice scarves to keep it warm.
I do love a good leather handbag.
I have Birkenstocks, Sketchers, Uggs, and two pairs of sheepskin slippers for winter.
I love cottage style decor.
I own a handmade patchwork quilt.
I have a cleaning caddy that has two kinds of fluffy dusters among the French soap and lavender scented cleaning products.
I love cardigans.
I've got more than one white lace blouse.
My house is decorated with vintage tin signs and old movie posters.

I am not ashamed.

I'm 33.

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 19:15

Antimacassars - what a word! I had to Google what it meant. And I completely agree about looking after things. I hate throwaway fashion. I must get a darning mushroom.
