To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Rarely buy magazines, love Womankind, no adverts.
Caught myself earlier browsing readers digest and people's friend, am 49, am I going in too deep...?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/06/2020 14:15

I've been reading gardening articles on the saga website most of the morning so I'm probably not the best person to judge.

Bluesparkled · 27/06/2020 14:48

I spent a week in hospital in my early 20s, and in those days there was a little room you could wander to in your nightie and borrow a book (or smoke Confused I had a very happy week with an enormous stack of readers digest and have been grateful ever since that they made an otherwise rubbish week really very pleasant!
And I remember now that when I went in to have my first baby, my husband’s elderly aunt sent me some proper tissues in a box as she said one always needs them in hospital. They were lavender scented and I always think of that time when I smell lavender - and rose, which was the hand cream my MIL gave me for the same reason!

I've just been sniffing my delivery of bar soaps whilst catching up with this thread 😍

Theres a gorgeous rose soap on a rope that's now hanging over my utility room sink, along with a proper stain remover soap bar!!

I cant wait to try out the Immortelle bar soap in the shower!!!

@hippochoc I was looking at people's friend the other day.

Lupellegrino · 27/06/2020 15:38

I bought the people's friend just the other day. It's lovely. Gentle stories and interesting articles, few good recipes and puzzles. I'm 37 and never in a million years thought I'd be going this way but I have decided I really need it. I need to escape from all the madness of living in this time and I feel comforted, reassured and like I'm taking good care of myself.

I'm attempting to cook like my grandma did and expand my baking repertoire. I'm truly happy exploring this world and embracing the 'old lady' life. It's true, we should be proud of our aging and growing and the increase in wisdom and experience. I want to reject these misogynistic beauty expectations of today and I'm happily connecting myself to a mindset of loving what I do have and who I am and taking good care of myself in an old fashioned way.
I'm hoping my girls benefit from this lifestyle change too.

I just received my doreen bras, 1 lilac and 1 black. I was anxious they wouldn't fit, but my goodness they are so comfortable and supportive! I also got some comfy bed socks, big knickers and a long floral nightie. Very happy granny-in-training here, just snipping off my labels in front of Midsomer Murders before I get started on dinner. 😁

It will be a sad day when this thread ends, it really is uplifting.

Scruffyoak · 27/06/2020 16:06

This thread warms my heart!

I think lots of things classed as old fashioned but they are just more simple. A way of enjoying the finer things in life.

KittCat · 27/06/2020 16:08

Just downloaded Hetty Wainthrope investigates Grin
I've just hauled out my kaftan and washing it to wear later...now searching the net to buy some more, and the old style cotton nighties.

Lovely post Lupellegrino

Circling back to the tea towel topic, I was going to start a thread on my love of tea towels a few weeks ago, but I decided not to as I thought there wouldn't be (m)any takers! Looks like I was wrong!

Anyway I love a good tea towel. My favourites are some really gorgeous ones from NZ and others from Wales, Cornwall, vintage recipes etc.

We're about to get our old kitchen replaced, and I may have mentioned to DH that tea towel storage will be important! I am thinking a deep drawer - or maybe just some pull-out baskets?! Does anyone have any suggestions on that?
At the mo I have a few in an overstuffed kitchen draw and the rest in the airing cupboard. I searched Pinterest for tea towel storage ideas but nothing doing!

PrivateSpidey · 27/06/2020 16:23

Sorry for the tea towel segue - maybe I should have started my own thread!

wildthingsinthenight · 27/06/2020 16:23

yellowbluebell what beautiful bags!
My ink cartridges and hardback notebook have just arrived!

wildthingsinthenight · 27/06/2020 16:30

Where is that amazing soap from BananasBananas?
I've got rid of everyone an am settling down to watch Anne With an E on Netflix.

This old lady life makes me very happy too.
Let's just keep the thread going.

Ink pen arrives tmrw...

wildthingsinthenight · 27/06/2020 16:33

PrivateSpidey teatowels are an important topic. Don't apologise. I have moved all my kitchen around and gave nowhere for mine now! Still thinking
My DH buys and sells vintage Adidas weekend bags among other things and an old one arrived from Germany last year that had been padded out for the journey with...vintage towels!!! Imagine my face! Grin

PrivateSpidey · 27/06/2020 16:38

Thank you wildthings Smile

Wow I can't believe it about the surprise haul of tea towels! How good is that?!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/06/2020 16:42

Wildthings, please post photos of the vintage German teatowels

Letseatgrandma · 27/06/2020 16:44

@BananasBananas

Where is that soap on a rope from-it’s lush!?

wildthingsinthenight · 27/06/2020 16:51

Mostly this pattern either this colourway or lemon and turquouse. (the others are on the washing machine) Also a few orange and white striped ones. We use them as handtowels

wildthingsinthenight · 27/06/2020 16:52

Ugh I can't post it. Hang on..

Sorry for the typos. In fact that goes for anything I post! Smile

GuyFawkesDay · 27/06/2020 16:55

Think the soaps are www.frenchsoaps.co.uk

I use them. They're awesome.

NannyOgg66 · 27/06/2020 17:01

@MrsMoastyToasty

Talc after a bath A nice cardigan with a pocket A small cotton handkerchief to go in the cardigan pocket. Low heeled shoes A mills and boon book A vest
Aren't Mills and Boon a bit racy now ? 😁 a few years ago a friends mum who was in her late 80s was telling me in great detail on the bus how much (and what sort of) sex was in them! I love lavender scented anything and am definitely at the comfy bra stage, I'm 53 so menopause related boob discomfort has forced this. Marks and Spencer do a fuller bust bralet that is pretty good and so comfy.
