To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Ooh, I forgot that I carry a tiny tube of Superglue in my work bag - and have glued soles of shoes back on for people, just like you!🙂

I wish you were my friend. I once walked into a memorial service (at Westminster Abbey of all places) and the sole of my boot came off and shot across the floor as I walked in. Only carrying a tiny purse so had to pick it up and shove it behind a pillar.

I am also firmly on the lemon curd train. I got a teeny tiny pot of gorgeous posh lemon curd in a gift set, bought a large jar from Tesco when that ran out. It really isn’t the same!

I'm terribly old lady when it comes to bags and storage....l love my old lady suitcase the best as I skip along a train station swinging it by my side as if I'm off to assist Miss Marple. And frame handbags are the best as you open them up and straight away you can find your beautiful embroidered handkerchief and your boiled sweets.

I love handkerchiefs and flannels and comfortable shoes. I love floral print and aprons when cooking/cleaning. My favourite shop is a garden centre followed by a cuppa tea. Im 33.

Scruffyoak · 27/06/2020 08:53

uh oh. Just got a cotton nightdress
So excited!

PearsMorgan · 27/06/2020 09:00

@ppeatfruit not sure if you’re still on the thread (just catching up) but there is a darner/mender on insta called Hikaru Noguchi who you should check out - plenty of tutorials.

Me: loose tea, sherry, and recently planted a rambling rose.

Scruffyoak · 27/06/2020 09:01

I'm now on ebay buying old style vintage tea towels.

PearsMorgan · 27/06/2020 09:03

And plenty of tutorials that should have said - youtube is your friend

Grin scruffy I love to LOOK at those cotton nighties but they ride up in bed so I wear knicks and Tshirts, cotton of course.!

I wear pinnys too. Oh and slippers!! I have 7 pairs because I change them everyday! ( and keep them aired on the windowsill) Our floors are all tiled downstairs so very cold in the summer and of course in the winter I wear 2 or 3 pairs of sox. Shock

ppeatfruit · 27/06/2020 09:13

Thank you Pears Grin I'm not on YT unfortunately. As I said I'm a bit of a technophobe mainly because of the horror stories on the radio about security on line and hackers etc.

I have cake forks... ever since a party for DD aged 7 - we had a few kids round doing crafts, followed by cake (yes, I am so old fashioned we served the cake AT the party...) and one of her friends - a lovely little French girl came up and asked "Could I have a cake fork please" with such politeness that I found what I could (dinner fork) and then made a note to get some cake forks...

Shamed by a 7 year old...

ppeatfruit · 27/06/2020 09:45

Aaah sweet Beyond Grin I do have a cake stand , Dd2 was going to do an old fashioned tea party for her wedding reception so I diligently went round the 2nd hand shops here and bought about 7 . Then the cafe/restaurant reneged so we were left with them! I took them back but kept one which I used last Christmas!

None of the fancy cutlery though we do have a set for best , a stainless steel 'rattailed' set with large and small forks which could be used for cakes I suppose!

I just washed my hands with soap kept in a lovely old dish , from the 20s that came with a huge bowl and jug in a junk . I use them for flowers etc. They would have all been on a wash stand I suppose.

ppeatfruit · 27/06/2020 09:52

Wildthings Thanks Grin

Bioprepper · 27/06/2020 10:20

M&s do the best cotton nighties for that Victorian ghost look lol

hippochoc · 27/06/2020 11:36

I love my first cup of coffee watching the garden birds, puzzles, have stacks of puzzle books. Can't beat Sainsburys full brief pants, go one size up, ooh comfy.
Have ordered m&s cotton nighties, do like the look of the ones from Whiteynighty (?) though mentioned earlier.

Lottieskeeper · 27/06/2020 11:38

Absolutely loving this thread; lovely to hear of other ladies that aren't obsessed with making themselves look younger. And who can enjoy the finer things in life.

I realised recently that I've started referring to myself as nearly 40 instead of 38! Like proper older ladies are always proud of how old they are: ' I'm nearly 94 you know dear.'

Also my nearly all black wardrobe of my younger years had been replaced with navy and teal shades in natural fabrics.

Nothing better than a pot of loose leaf Assam in the morning with marmalade on toasted homemade bread with salted butter.

Studycast · 27/06/2020 11:46

Bonsoir have a good range of nighties:

here

ppeatfruit · 27/06/2020 12:09

Has anyone mentioned the 1940s Radio Station at 128 Kbps MP3 ? it 's briliiant not just 40s. The best bit is NO COMMERCIALS Grin

It's wonderful because there's a lot of depressing stuff on R4 , I'm not sure about the 'readings' they're doing now. Though reading from Emma by Jane Austen is alright which has just finished Grin (a lot was cut out).

mightymalties · 27/06/2020 12:10

I got my subscription copy of The Simple Things magazine yesterday (another one many on here may enjoy). It has an actual feature on the joys of cotton nighties, with some recommendations for those of you looking Grin

StartupRepair · 27/06/2020 12:23

Love this thread so much. Someone gave me a Penhaligons Starter kit and I fell for Blenheim Bouquet, which is a lovely lemony cologne, worn by Churchill.
Early nights are just the best.

StartupRepair · 27/06/2020 12:25

Don't know if anyone here has seen Hannah Gadsby in Nanette where she describes her favourite sound as the china tea cup gently returning to its saucer.

okiedokieme · 27/06/2020 12:32

Sketchers sandals, Clark's for dress/work shoes, and I love Debenhams but apparently I'm the only one as they are in liquidation! Hotter for shoes too.

My dd (20), dm and I have been known to buy the same things, is this sad or what!

okiedokieme · 27/06/2020 12:34

I've found my people here! Off to national trust gardens shortly (in rain) but I'm going on a motorbike so does that give me some street cred back???

ppeatfruit · 27/06/2020 12:37

No that's great okiedokieme Grin You've all got good taste Grin

okiedokieme · 27/06/2020 12:38

@Elvesdontdomagic

A lot of the overseas students use shopping trolleys here, also seen young mums with them on the bus. If you don't drive it's super practical

ppeatfruit · 27/06/2020 12:41

That 's a bit modern and dangerous dear! Just be careful Grin
