To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Oh and on the matter of Rose and Violet creams - The Rococo ones are particularly good.

EgremontRusset · 24/06/2020 10:19

Just discovered this thread. What a pleasure.

Old hand embroidered table cloths and tray cloths - the sort with flowers sewn in daisy stitch and crinoline ladies in the corners.

LadyEloise · 24/06/2020 10:32

My electric blanket gets used some nights in summer Blush
It's a single bed size flat pad type on our 6 ft bed so dh not affected. Smile

I use those net umbrella thingies over plates of food to prevent flies landing.
Great for salads etc when barbecuing.

This is the best thread ever, I have been rereading it loads. I think whoever said that old ladies know everything and we are fools has it spot on!
Imperial Leather soap, Badedas bath gelee, talc, and 4711 cologne, absolutely yes especially in this hot weather. Lovely tablecloths, and proper napkins. Soap bars in underwear drawer, that is also lined. My beautiful 1920s French art deco dressing table that I skinted myself buying more than 20 years ago because I couldn't bear to not have it, it's the only piece of furniture I care about and I love using it. When everyone is out and I have peace and quiet, sometimes I wear a satin half slip with a satin camisole, put hot rollers in, and sit and do my makeup just because. I don't have occasion to wear my pearls often but I look at them a lot and it makes me happy that I have them should the need arise. Ironed bedlinen, most of my friends laugh at me but nothing beats it. I really want a Doreen bra, but they don't seem to do a 32 band, certainly not in an F cup, would I be comfortable in a 34? And proper tea in a pot. I think I need to look out some Agatha Christie thanks to this thread too!

Skirts never jeans is a new one for me

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 11:32

@dudsville
Yes, it was really lovely... it gave my son some good ‘warm’ memories of home when growing up. Sadly we lost his amazing Dd to cancer when Ds was only 15. I don’t regret all those years being at home as it was what I really wanted to do.🌹

LadyEloise · 24/06/2020 11:51

Yellowbluebell On informal dress days at work most women wear jeans. The excitement at being allowed to 🙄
Imo jeans only look well on skinny people.
Most of my colleagues look nicer in their normal work clothes.
Jeans can be cold in winter and too hot in summer.
I don't get the love.
I've turned into an old lady Grin

This is one of my long-standing rants. Jeans don’t look good on most women - at least not those who are pear rather than apple. And they are not comfortable to move in - too stiff/gaping/builders bum when you lean over to unpack the dishwasher. Skinny jeans look even worse but they seem to be compulsory in some age groups.

torquewench · 24/06/2020 12:50

Delurking to recommend Camille for big comfy pants - I like their maxi briefs and have 9 pairs.

Their website also has some natty bedjackets Wink

This is a thread woven with gold!

Lemon curd sandwiches on a Sunday evening.

shoehoard · 24/06/2020 13:36

My most fond memory is imperial leather my nan would only use this and I use it now 😍😍

SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 13:39

Old ladies dress for themselves, not for men. So they wear things they love, and that suit their lives.
I have a friend who has the dream house of everyone on here. It is incredibly pretty, with rosebud china, and cosy sofas, garden full of flowers with her own little swimming pond. She is in her sixties with tumbling white curls and makes all her own floral long dresses. I love her.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 13:40

YewandOak did you order the set with the soap ? It makes my bathroom smell gorgeous.

Lupellegrino · 24/06/2020 13:48

Chums.co.uk has candy stripe flanelette sheets and traditional satin trimmed blankets, floral frilly bed covers 😬😬😬😬😬 I need more money to fund this addiction 😭🤣 it reminds me of sleeping at my grandma's and I'm desperate to relive it again.

Zebracat · 24/06/2020 13:51

Does anyone else like Angela Thirkell? I love her books. I also love China dogs and China cabinets. Yes to pearls. And let’s hear it for washing lines, proper ones, none of your telescopic nonsense. And I too have an Art Deco dressing table.
Some one asked for a photo so this is my poodle. He’s a standard. Very handsome.

AdaColeman · 24/06/2020 13:57

Lemon curd lovers ~ Harvey Nichols have a delicious lemon curd, if you are too busy to make your own. Ocado sell it.

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 14:04

@LadyGAgain
Oh! Lemon curd sandwiches! >> disappears to add lemon curd to online shopping order

SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 14:04

A standard poodle ! 😍😍😍😍 living the dream Zebra

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 14:07

YY to proper washing lines and decent pegs (Lakeland) and getting the washing out early on sunny days! Love line-dried washing! I only had a tumble dryer when I started back to work... ditto a microwave... I still prefer my dinner warmed up in the oven under a plate!

SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 14:07

Lemon curd makes the best jam tarts ever. Make tiny ones so they go chewy at the edges.

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 14:10

@SirVixofVixHall
Morrison’s and Tesco both do a passable Lemon curd 6 pk. My boss is a great fan, says he hasn’t had them since childhood.

Binterested · 24/06/2020 14:16

If you love lemon curd you might need to know about Delia’s Lancaster Lemon Tart. Amazing. You can take your panna cotta and your tiramisu and whatnot and stuff it. This is delicious. Plus you get left over home made lemon curd to have on hot buttered crumpets here
