To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

DH is a closet old man too. He uses proper shaving soap (not foam) with a bristle brush and a cutthroat razor. I love watching him shave.

I also lovd that he wears a real bow tie when we (used to) go out to black tie events, never a ready made one.

He shines his shoes every day and has lots of pocket squares. Hes not in his office at the moment (working from home) but he still wears a shirt and tie.

I think I married my grandad! He's 39 going on 89.

Full sized briefs here.

I read the People’s Friend at dms house.

I’m 44.

Bioprepper MitziK

Miss Read is my absolute favourite! I have them all and reread them often.

IntermittentParps thank you for the link!

wildthingsinthenight · 24/06/2020 00:09

I'm wearing my long white cotton nightie tonight. I feel like the ghost of some Victorian woman wafting about. It's so cool and comfy.
Also I have a long slim calendar hanging in the kitchen. A flowery one

BeaLola · 24/06/2020 00:17

"Miss Marple - the proper version with Joan Hickson"

Is there any other! The lesser ones try too hard, witter too much or are way too young.

I have just got Netflix - I so love Anne with an'E' - beautifully done - worth my subscription alone

Despite my kindle for holidays or bed
I love hard backed books especially gorgeously illustrated ones

Bath oil
Lawn dressing gown
Velvet ribbon
Tissue paper for wrapping
I keep pretty boxes

What is Ringtons ?

wildthingsinthenight · 24/06/2020 00:23

A doorstep tea delivery company!

SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 00:48

My friends, I give you.....doilies. Oh yes. With gold and silver ones for special teas.
As the nights are now drawing in I am looking forward to the time of hot water bottle and electric blankets.

Thanks to those of you who mentioned the whereabouts of Lifebouy soap! I knew my late husband was the man for me, when I first visited his flat when we were dating... and in the bathroom was red Lifebouy soap... and Vosene shampoo. He also used to wet-shave with a bristle brush and solid shaving soap..Aaah, be still my beating heart!
He also owned (and wore) several 3-piece suits and a dinner suit and used to take me to dinner-dances 😮 (Remember those?)
I was a SAHM for 10 years, and made all meals from scratch, including puff pastry, and usually baked every day for his lunchbox. I loved running the home... I was early 20s... must have had old-lady tendencies even then!

dudsville · 24/06/2020 07:40

kaath, that description of your life sounds really wonderful!

Much prefer this one! Down with botox!
PrivateSpidey · 24/06/2020 09:40

I just used something that I think might qualify and I don't think I've seen it mentioned yet - a mesh food cover! It's to go over some scones and has flowers embroidered onto it.

I admire your commitment to hot water bottles SirVix Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 09:44

Down with Botox ! Up with winceyette pyjamas and sturdy shoes !

DP (or perhaps I should rename him MLOM - my little old man) produced a gold doily tablecloth for Christmas a couple of years back.

He thinks electric blankets are dangerous, however, and doesn't want one in the bed. That's also very old school!

I might get one anyway

Binterested · 24/06/2020 09:48

Oh I’ve got one of those spidey

Two of my favourite old lady things - my milk jug cover which was my grandma’s and my sugar bowl. Can we share some photos pls - currently on a really boring webinar and would prefer to look at all your old lady knick knacks (no need to post pictures of knickers Grin)

Meh. Why try to tell yourself that you look like a 25 year old when you aren't? It gets to the point where you're more likely to be able to make a cat look like a banana than you'll be able to convince anybody you're anything other than an extremely insecure middleaged woman.

I'm a middleaged woman who just really doesn't care what people think. So I wear what I damn well please - which includes comfortable underwear underneath the fashion.

ppeatfruit · 24/06/2020 10:10

MrsSchadenfreude ARE YOU THE SCHADY OF OLD????? Are you ok?? used to be on the Strictly threads ????

I LOVE this thread !!Yes to almost everything on this page!!! (sorry I haven't read it all!)

Why should OLD be an insult ? It's a damn sight better for the environment to have a hot water bottle . I'm trying to encourage the people on the Middle aged thread to forget fast fashion and BOTOX yeuch !!!

Cattermole · 24/06/2020 10:11

@Michelleoftheresistance

Oh I love Miss Read!

And the Doreen Tovey books about her Siamese cats and donkey
Lily of the Valley hand cream
And garden centres that sell Lily of the Valley hand cream and bee friendly plants

I am impressed by the poster who has her children trained to garden centres and nice teas above beaches, now that is style! Grin

I share a publisher with Doreen Tovey. This delights me every time I write it. Grin
SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 10:15

MitziK I quite agree.

woodhill · 24/06/2020 10:16

Exactly- lockdown has brought home how unnecessary all the extra stuff is. You know trying to look fantastic every day

I have roots, live in casual wear and don't care if I am no longer on trend or look frumpy

Joseph Seibel comfy sandals for me

riotlady · 24/06/2020 10:16

Surprised so many people have said Anne with an E... I’ve been avoiding it as I heard it was really miserable compared to the books! Is it good?
