To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Your Auntie Eileen sounds inspirational @Kaathesnake !

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 14:19

Being “poorly” when I was little... lovely calm quiet bedroom, cool cotton sheets, thin blankets in the summer, and striped flannelette, heavy blankets, and eiderdown and a hottie in the winter. Certainly no tv and barely any radio as you were ill and ‘needed your rest’ Maybe we got better quicker as all you could do was rest quietly and sleep!
Cups of tea, toast and soup were the meals and it was a real test of if you were genuinely ill - you could only manage to put up with that if you were!! Calamine lotion for bites and stings and ‘sunstroke’ and all manner of odd potions for coughs and colds😀
And a potty under the bed.....

LadyGAgain · 24/06/2020 14:20

Adding Delia's lemon tart to recipe list. Yum!

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 14:25

@LadyGAgain
Oh, she was! I lived with her for about a year when I was around 8 or 9, and I’m sure I picked up some of her habits! I loved the way she ran the house ‘properly’ and she taught me so much about cooking, baking etc. It was a house of polished shoes, an old-fashioned Sunday, and looking after the home. Looking back, it was a lovely timeless way to be. The rest of the family regarded her as ‘too posh’ but she wasn’t really, just liked to do things right.

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 14:30

Has anyone else noticed, that since lockdown started, the old-style Sunday returned? Everywhere so much quieter, no-one dashing to supermarkets or hanging around shops or spending all day in the pub watching football... it’s been rather nice, like my childhood Sundays😃

EvilPea · 24/06/2020 14:32

I buy a lot of my furniture from the second hand shops. It’s cheap and beautifully made
I have to resist the cut glass and China section.

Does anyone remember the chuck out your chintz ikea advert? Embrace the chintz!

EvilPea · 24/06/2020 14:33

@Kaathesnake
Yes! It’s been nice, big roast dinners, and baking for the week.

justkeepmovingon · 24/06/2020 14:40

Oh bolloks, my whole house smells of lavender, I have lavender everything candles, show gel, face cream.

I was happily just reading this thread laughing to myself about all you old folk and that cropped up.

wildthingsinthenight · 24/06/2020 14:50

This thread makes me so happy.
I love lemon curd on toast with salted butter first.

I'm watching the new series of Alan Bennett's Talking Heads. It feels very cosy and old ladyish. Bliss

MitziK · 24/06/2020 14:58

Make pancakes.

Add plain yoghurt, proper sour lemon curd (like the Harvey Nicks one - and the Coop Irresistible one is indistinguishable from that - it's proper Old Lady to buy things from the Coop, rather than go for a wanky brand unnecessarily), sliced strawberries and a drizzle of Maple syrup for the burnt sugar flavour, not extra sweetness.

You'll thank me for it.

Substitute the yoghurt for proper clotted cream and you've got amazing scones.

ppeatfruit · 24/06/2020 15:02

Ref. Lavender , the essential oil is the BEST healer of insect bites, burns, cuts etc. even DH loves it.

I mostly use essential oils for my toilette plus sweet almond and apricot oils to mix them with. There are no nasty SLS's or petroleum jelly in them and they last a long time. Eucalyptus for colds and for massaging into sore arms or legs too. I could go on but I won't. Grin

ppeatfruit · 24/06/2020 15:05

Mitzik It's funny how I forget pancakes except on Shrove Tuesday, I like molasses or demerara sugar and lemon juice on mine.

justkeepmovingon · 24/06/2020 15:10

@ppeatfruit I'm my defence I'm run down and recovering so felt a huge urge to make my whole house smell like lavender and use the oils. So it's ok!

ppeatfruit · 24/06/2020 15:21

Grin Flowers wishing you better , I'm not attacking you just Grin I love drops on my pillow to help me sleep , oh and I sniff it to get off to sleep !!! I wear it as a perfume too. Blimey, so much lavender ! I do use mint ess. oil to wake up and for tummy pains, oh and to stop cravings for sweet things as well.

isthismylifenow · 24/06/2020 15:37

I put lavender essential oil in the shower just before I get it, once the hot water gets going it smells great and I do a big breathe in.

I just lit my logburner and lavender goes into the humidifier kettle.

500BusStops · 24/06/2020 15:58

@wildthingsinthenight I didn't know there was a new Talking Heads, thank you for this! I plan to spend a nice Sunday afternoon watching them on iplayer with a cup of Earl grey and slice of cake... wearing my big knickers Smile

wildthingsinthenight · 24/06/2020 16:01

500BusStops
I just realised today!
They're all on iplayer and Sky.
Just watched the Sarah Lanacashire one. It was shocking and not actually cost at all.Shock
Hope you enjoy them

wildthingsinthenight · 24/06/2020 16:01

Oooh, I have a herbal suggestion for that.

If you grow Angelica in the garden, the stems are sweet enough that, when cooked in with it, you can get by with just a tiny amount of sugar in something as sour as fresh Rhubarb.

Ah, that's another OL thing.

Sour, bitter and strong flavours.

Rhubarb. Not just in crumbles, but as a salty/sweet vegetable underneath a roast chicken.
Goosegogs.
Brussels sprouts (but cooked lightly, not put on to boil in mid July so they'll just need another six hours on Christmas Day to be ready).
Horseradish. Not the flavourless 'Hot' in jars, the proper fiery stuff grated and making your eyes stream.
Pickles. Especially pickled onions that knock your head off.
Mustard.
Sloes (in gin)
Damsons.
Bitter Lemon, not lemonade.
Proper ginger beer.
Marmalade with thick cut peel and Seville oranges or Limes.
Rhubarb and ginger jam.

Stuff that isn't fashionable. Stuff that you like and that's why you're having it.

kojolo · 24/06/2020 17:03

@MitziK I have to insist upon Mrs Darlington's lemon curd

I will brook no argument! Grin

kojolo · 24/06/2020 17:11

...And crosspost but YES to everything you just said.

I am here for rhubarb and thick cut marmalade and mustard made up from powder. Eccles cakes from the market; sliced topside from the cold cuts counter with horseradish spread on it. Liquorice. Dark beer. Ginger beer in a brown bottle. Pickled onions tucked into a cheddar cheese sandwich. Marmite and salted butter on crumpets. Plain rice pudding and lemon curd.

Twenty2 · 24/06/2020 17:26

I've thought of something my nana used to drink; Rose's lime cordial. I've just put a bottle in my online trolley!

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 17:52

Our supermarkets are going to wonder what the hells going on this week!! We’re all creeping off to add ‘old lady things’ to our online trollies😀
This thread has made me add;
Lemon curd
Decent bread to go with it
Pickled onions
Bitter Lemon
‘Sucky’ sweets
Lavender everything
‘Proper’ furniture polish ( that needs elbow grease but is soooo worth it!)
** admitting defeat with horseradish😢

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 17:55

Can I admit to loving hand washing clothes? I love it!! So satisfying!! We used to have a separate spin dryer years ago, that spun everything to virtually dry!
I loved doing extra bits of washing by hand and spinning the life out of them😁 Much quicker than the washing machine

AdaColeman · 24/06/2020 18:07

@Twenty2 Gin and lime is a classic old lady drink, perfect for a summer afternoon! Gin Gin Gin
