To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

YY to firm-soled slippers ( for pottering outside with washing etc!)

Pottering in a dressing gown is very old lady, a lovely way to be busy doing nothing in particular😀
Talcum powder is lovely, it makes you feel extra dry and smooth after a bath or shower, or on a hot day, love the stuff especially with a fluffy puff from a box of powder! Bronnley, Yardley & M+S do nice ones, also Johnson’s baby powder.

For those of you a love a cosy murder mystery, may I recommend the Martha Grimes Richard Jury books? Murder, landed-gentry, old pubs (the stories are all named after real pubs), English country villages, cats and Tio Pepe, perfect for all my fellow old ladies Grin Some of them are currently only £1.89 on Kindle right now, plus I've found loads that I've not read yet, having bought all mine many years ago second hand.

Oh yes to Sanderson wallpaper. Anything William Morris style is good for me.

And a nice slice of proper white bread and welsh butter. Not sourdough and not dipped in olive oil and balsamic thank you very much Angry

MadamShazam · 23/06/2020 19:58

I love this thread! Ok,
Big pants
Doreen bras, or any non wired bra
Cardigans
Violet Creams
Classic fm in the morning ( on the rare occasion I have a morning to myself)
Lily of the Valley scent
The occasional historical romance novel.
I love my inner old lady!

I have children who said they would rather go to a garden centre than to the beach last summer. They were 7 and 11. They complained that the sand at the beach would get between their toes, whereas the cafe at the garden centre did really nice teas. Grin

Hope the link works. Fingers crossed.
**@Bluesparkled* and @PrivateSpidey* I am presently re-reading the Eliots of Damerosehay trilogy again.
I remember reading The Bird In The Tree when I was in the process of leaving my XH and I found it intensely comforting.
Oh brilliant, I haven’t read them! Happy days. Will look online and get my good cups ready:)

Love Rosamunde Picher books and Maeve Binchy. Make me yearn for a time and place I've never lived in which probably never existed anyway!
Drogonssmile · 23/06/2020 20:56

@Bioprepper you've made my day thank you! I'm so asking DH to get me one of these for my birthday! My Gran had one and it was the best thing ever Grin

MadisonMontgomery · 23/06/2020 21:06

If we are recommending books, can I suggest Mary Stewart? The Little Broomstick is one of my favourite ever children’s books, and her adult ones are fab too.

Michelleoftheresistance · 23/06/2020 21:32

Oh I love Miss Read!

And the Doreen Tovey books about her Siamese cats and donkey
Lily of the Valley hand cream
And garden centres that sell Lily of the Valley hand cream and bee friendly plants

I am impressed by the poster who has her children trained to garden centres and nice teas above beaches, now that is style! Grin

katseyes7 · 23/06/2020 21:40

l've just ordered Village School from amazon. l need to get my Miss Read stash back again.

Binterested · 23/06/2020 21:54

Next time I am in a garden centre I’m heading for the gifty bit and buying some lily of the valley scented stuff and a William Morris print plasticised tote bag. I’ve always wanted one of those.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 23/06/2020 21:57

@Kaathesnake, the Carbolic Soap Company sells a soap called Redbouy, which may be similar to the lifebouy soap. I’ve bought Reckits blue tablets there and have found them to be reliable and good.

Lovely thread! My Mum has the Ringtons tea man and I order from him when I visit her.

Lupellegrino · 23/06/2020 22:16

Since this thread started I have become obsessed. I've ordered big knickers, a big cotton nightie, a 40's style tea dress and cable knit cardie, 2 doreen bras and some lovely new snag tights. I've also got a set of Port Meirion cake tins coming and I've been meal planning traditional meals and baking. I'm watching Downton Abbey as I write this and I am loving life! GrinCake

Calendars! Who has a lovely calendar hanging up? I like the long ones. Current one has lovely flower pics.

frugalkitty · 23/06/2020 22:32

I thought of something else.....Readers Digest! When I was at uni, my Nan would save them up for me and I'd take them back after the holidays. I'd forgotten that until catching up on this thread. I loved my Nan.

Snog · 23/06/2020 22:36

I have a royal albert tea set, a cotton cellular blanket on my bed, a brass bedstead and I like to dress like a charcacter from little house on the prairie. My fave netflix series is Anne with an E.

I never wear heels and I love the Tu big pants. In the winter I wear vests. I do not buy ready meals, real food only.

BananasBananas · 23/06/2020 22:42

I've just splurged out on some rose scented bar soap, and some proper savon de Marseille soap for laundry, washing up and hand washing. I can't wait for them to come!!

Canklesforankles · 23/06/2020 23:03

Ooh Anne with an E on Netflix. DR was watching it and I was so scared it would spoil my memories of the books but it is lovely. Even if the house is shaker style meets slightly Scandi chic

Canklesforankles · 23/06/2020 23:03

DD was watching it. Not my dr which would be a bit weird

Magpie1976 · 23/06/2020 23:07

Have just bought go walk sketchers thanks to this fabulous thread

CRISPSWARS · 23/06/2020 23:19

I still use pan-stik too. I first heard about it in an Adrian Mole book, something about how Adrian's Mum was ''a slut'' because she went to bed with her make-up on and smeared the pillow cases all over with pan-stik. I decided to I buy it after that and it's still the best concealer ever.

I like a lot of old lady things, I have since my late twenties. Big knickers, talc, mending clothes, gardening, card games, and I love the names Dolly and Kitty as women's names.

udnertheradar · 23/06/2020 23:31

Rose and Violet creams
The Archers omnibus
Electric blanket!
