To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Does anyone know where I can get some cheap cologne like you get in Spanish supermarkets?
Boots used to do lemon and lavender 'toilet water' but it's been discontinued....

For those of you wearing a Doreen bra- how does the sizing work? According to their website with an under bra measurement if 33 I should go for a 38 band. Does that sound right? I’m more used to a 34 band

I was measured by a nice lady in Debenhams. I thought I was a 34D but I'm a 36C.

woodhill · 21/06/2020 18:17

Yeh to Port Meiron, also love Ainsley and wedgewood

Also like Laura Ashley and Kath Kidston

Lupellegrino · 21/06/2020 18:21

This thread is like a comfy cosy hug.
I don't see it as old lady, I see it as I'm not afraid to be myself.
It took a long time for me to be happy with me and I'm now happy to say I'm a countryfile watching, cross stitch loving, tea and cake eating 40 year old who likes the odd drop of Bristol cream and comfy big knickers.

PeskyRooks · 21/06/2020 18:26

dudsville & dido for big pants and proper slips it's Damart all the way! And they do the Doreen bra in lilac by the way!

PeskyRooks · 21/06/2020 18:28

Sorry dido it was trekker that wanted to know

mintandcoral · 21/06/2020 18:29

I second massive, high waisted pants. Discovered them when I was pregnant and never looked back.

Deathraystare · 21/06/2020 18:31

Oh and talc in a little tub with a powder puff.

I was thinking about my mum's Helena Rubinstein powder puff and box 'Heaven Scent', it was. Until Dad used it to trap a spider!!!

I was given Hermes Caleche powder in a box. Wow! Felt so grown up!!!

I am also quite old ladyish in other ways. I look out for comfy shoes now. I have kept my Aunt's cardigans and like big knickers. Oh for a comfy bra!!!

SirVixofVixHall · 21/06/2020 18:34

Yum Raspberry ruffles.

DustyMaiden · 21/06/2020 18:36

Wraps/shawls that make me feel like Marilla Cuthbert. Wicker baskets.

AdaColeman · 21/06/2020 18:44

Oohh! Raspberry Ruffles and Callard & Bowser Butterscotch and Dessert Nougat.

Deathraystare · 21/06/2020 18:50

Callard & Bowser Butterscotch

How Bizarre! These have been on my mind too.

I must agree I love the Port Merion china too. I used to go to Uxbridge and see a collection of it in the shopping centre. Also I have a Laura Ashley tea set once. Nothing remains sadly. It was called Oriental Garden.

SerendipitySunshine · 21/06/2020 18:51

Another favourite is Brora cashmere cardigans. The moths have got to mine, so I bought a darning mushroom after reading this thread!

Another drink - campari and soda. Reminds me of my much-missed Italian great grandmother.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/06/2020 18:54

DestroyedPeople Amazon have lots of different brands. Look for lemon cologne.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/06/2020 18:56

I still miss those Callard and Bowser little boxes of nougat or butterscotch Deathraystare .

Destroyedpeople · 21/06/2020 18:56

I like to have a tin of boiled sweets in the car but at the moment I have XXX mints.

I am finding men who have gone grey, very attractive Smile

TheRedShoes75 · 21/06/2020 19:28

I love this thread. It just feels so cosy. I am eyeing up a Doreen bra as I’ve got to the point where I have HAD IT with underwire bras.

Yes to cups of tea, cats, blankets, digestives, flat shoes, big pants, tea cosies (have two from Etsy), early to bed. Anne Tyler books fit into this category for me too.
