To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Can't believe how many of these have old lady associations! I've been a big fan of most things mentioned since I was in my teens or 20s!

However, I seldom get to bed before midnight (11 is my idea of an early night), although it's more like 1.30-2 a.m.; never brush my hair; never iron and wouldn't think twice about shouting at a stranger in the street, if they annoy me!

That's interesting, remember the green as well often in church halls.

The schools no longer teaches home economics so someone may have adopted it[/quote]
You can see them frequently in 'period' TV programmes. They were used in Housewife, 49, with the wonderful, much-missed Victoria Wood. I'd love a Jasmine teapot, but sadly, they go for more than I can afford on eBay.

I agree that modern Pears soap is a pale imitation of the old bars. Unilever has turned it into a hideous, palm oil-filled tragedy. It doesn't smell like I remember it when my nana used to have it in her bathroom either Sad

GuyFawkesDay · 21/06/2020 16:34

I found my people !!

Bar soap
Big pants
Nivea cream
Pearls
Cardigans
Miss Marple, midsomer murders and Father Brown.
Wednesday is for repair shop and sewing bee
Always wear rubber gloves to clean
Like a nice fruit loaf and butter with an afternoon cuppa. No margarine though, thanks.
Proper roasts, from scratch. Being proud of my home made Yorkshire puddings.
Tea made in a pot. And a cosy. More tea at drinkable temperature.
Soda Crystals to clean sinks.

Anyone know any good quality satin or silk slips that are actually slips and not primarily for sex? My grandmother had beautiful slips but all i find are dull sheaths or "baby doll" things that aren't meant primarily for wearing under dresses.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 21/06/2020 16:49

I’ll see your lavender and rose perfumes and raise you lavender and rose scented drawer-liners and wardrobe hangers.

I’ve been embracing my inner old lady for years: heated throws, garden centres, gentle murder mysteries.

I drank two glasses of wine at home on Friday night and felt wild.

Couldn’t give a fuck - this is who I am and I’m not letting the older generation monopolise the best things in life. My mum is supportive and saved up her Lakeland catalogue to pass on to me once she’s finished ‘reading’ it.

BikeRunSki · 21/06/2020 16:50

Atrixo handcream
Great as face cream too.

Destroyedpeople · 21/06/2020 16:52

A teapot with a cosy! I spent all of last winter trawling the charity shops 'sourcing' a hand knitted cosy...

BikeRunSki · 21/06/2020 16:58

I’ve been making leaf tea in a pot With my charity shop hand knitted cosy since my mid 20s - about half my life ago.

Destroyedpeople · 21/06/2020 16:59

Ooh bikerunski...will you show me yours if I show you mine?

lockdownalli · 21/06/2020 17:00

@Imissmoominmama

Yes to sherry too, but I’m a Tio Pepe drinker.
Yes another vote here for Tio Pepe. It's so continental you know Grin

This thread is making me lust after some tinned peaches with Ideal evaporated milk.

4711 Eau de cologne
Tea in a china cup from a tea pot.
Knitting and cross stitch
Apron in in the kitchen
Nice soap in my underwear drawer
Coasters under cups and glasses
And I love carnations

Scruffyoak · 21/06/2020 17:05

HipTightOnions · 21/06/2020 17:05

www.patra.com/Search/Slip

Disclaimer: I haven’t tried these myself.

Scruffyoak · 21/06/2020 17:06

oh i also put soap in my drawers!

Celledora · 21/06/2020 17:06

I saw they'd dressed Dot Cotton in my favourite shirt once. It was from bloody TopShop so not necessarily aimed at the 80-ish contingent.

DidoLamenting · 21/06/2020 17:10

I'm 61. I've never used tea bags. Loose tea all the way.

and the Triumph delicate Doreen bra is the most comfy thing ever!

Isn't it just. I only discovered them a few months ago after decades of underwired bras.

frugalkitty · 21/06/2020 17:28

Smiling at the poster with a Honda Jazz....I have one too and love her! She is an old lady car though, but with tinted windows so you know, hanging on to a mis-spent youth Grin

So many things I agree with (although I don't drink tea, bleugh! I always say the only T I drink is a G&T)

Petticoats under skirts/dresses even though I'm very much a jeans girl
Soap in the undies drawer
Drawer liners
Lavender bags

For those who like the smell of Atrixo you might like Glow by JLo, took me ages to place the smell and then remembered mums hand cream from my youth.

I got two port meirion plates the other day from a neighbour....DS said they're 'old lady plates' which is fine because I'm waiting for my mum to take the hint and give me hers.

Crochet....tick
Cats....tick

However, I draw the line at a shopping trolley. No way, nope, not ever. My mum has always had one as my parents can't drive so she uses one for shopping. As a kid it was unbelievably uncool and embarrassing to have a mum with a trolley so she'd say 'hold the trolley a minute' and I'd be all 'no way! Someone might SEE me!' The horror will never leave me, I still can't believe they got trendy a few years back.

Trekkerbabe · 21/06/2020 17:29

Where does one buy massive pants from?!

DidoLamenting · 21/06/2020 17:34

Where does one buy massive pants from?!

Any supermarket that sells clothes. Asda and Sainsbury's both sell multipacks. They are actually very pretty too. I have big knickers in really vibrant yellow, pink and blue and several that are rip offs of Cath Kidston floral prints.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 21/06/2020 17:37

I'd love a link to a decent bed jacket. They are marvellous things especially when you live in a draughty house. At the moment, I use a fleece jacket from Lands End - but I remember my granny having some lovely ones.

YY to loose leaf tea, embroidery, crochet, Damart, Patara and the Lakeland catalogue. I was gutted when they said they were going to stop printing them and just go online.
I'm glad they've obviously seen the error of their ways and are now printing them... Sales must have dropped!
They are my favourite bed time read.

Onthebrink67 · 21/06/2020 17:48

For those of you wearing a Doreen bra- how does the sizing work? According to their website with an under bra measurement if 33 I should go for a 38 band. Does that sound right? I’m more used to a 34 band.

ilovepixie · 21/06/2020 17:53

Raspberry ruffles and mint imperials

ifIwerenotanandroid · 21/06/2020 17:56

I've rediscovered teacakes during lockdown.

What a treat & a comfort a toasted, buttered teacake is with some nice Earl Grey.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 21/06/2020 17:58

Trekkerbabe - Matalan also do comfy pants in multipacks.
