To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Oh I love this thread! Mine are:

Classic FM
A cup of tea in bed looking out the window and listening to the birds
A hot water bottle and an early night in bed with a book
Bed socks
Gardeners World
Feeling very accomplished when I remember a plants name
Newly discovered old lady magazines Country Home, Country Living, Period Homes, The English Garden
Old fashioned puddings like rhubarb crumble and proper thick custard
Ladies with purple/pink/blue rinses - love it
A wool blanket over my feet when I’m watching TV
Lavender oil and cardigans
4711 - reminds me of my nanna
Fruit cake

mathanxiety · 21/06/2020 20:54

Hello, my name is mathanxiety and I am an old lady.

Tea from a teapot, in my case Blue Willow pattern. Blue and white china in general, and tea (Tetley please).
Tea brack with butter.
Bakewell slice.
Marzipan.
Liquorice.
Ginger ale.
Ginger snaps.
Sardines on toast.
Proper home made gravy.
Cake forks and plates.
Playtex cross your heart bra, and I believe I will be looking into Triumph's offerings.
Granny knickers; what can I say that hasn't already been said...
Cashmere.
Cardigans. I have an extensive collection of both short cotton, fine wool or cashmere buttoned-style ones and long coat style ones with deep pockets, many of them very chunky and ideal for wearing while reading Agatha Christie, Evelyn Waugh, P.G. Wodehouse, or John LeCarre, or watching Father Brown, Antiques Roadshow, GBBO/S, and anything that involves decorating or redoing houses.
Twin sets. You can't go wrong with a twin set and pearls and a nice tween skirt.
I hate it when my neck feels cold in winter, so I have several scarves.
Traveling blankets in the car.
Leather handbags, leather gloves, suede or leather shoes.
Shopping basket on wheels. I have had one for two years and use it all the time. They are getting quite hip where I live. Some people have fancy ones with an insulated section. My DCs laughed so hard when I bought it but I was unrepentant.
House plants, including spider plants.
Jigsaw puzzles.
Cats - cats and jigsaw puzzles don't always co-exist happily, but I persevere anyway.
A little bottle of brandy in my handbag. You never know when a snifter might be necessary.
A tipple of sherry before dinner.
G&T, vodka and lime.
(I see a trend developing here.)
Embroidery and crocheting, and woven pot holders in the kitchen. I darn holes and mend things.
Rubber gloves for washing up and cleaning the bathroom because they save your hands.
An apron for cooking always, and a short housecoat too.
String bags which I crocheted myself for shopping with (along with my little trolley). I took up macrame recently.
Imperial Leather soap, with a magnet stuck into it and a magnet holder doodley dad on the bathroom wall above the washbasin to stick the soap to.
Badedas.
Soap instead of shower gel.
Lavender all the way. I love lily of the valley too, and roses and peonies, and for a floral centerpiece on the table, dried hydrangeas. Also Monty Don's gardening and garden programmes and Monty Don .
Yardley lavender soap in all my drawers.
Pot pourri with a little grated lavender soap thrown in.
Sensible Heels, and sandals that verge on the clunky.
If I've been out walking around all day I soak my feet when I get home before putting on the kettle.
Jumble sales, garage sales, estate sales.
Fountain pens.
Sudoku.
Books. I have a kindle but I never really warmed to it.
Also pedantry.

mathanxiety · 21/06/2020 20:56

tween = tweed

I feel so much better after getting all of that ^^ off my chest.

Sardines on toast and brack with butter!!
@mathanxiety.... Yes and yes....I am so making brack this week or 'bara brith' as they call it round here...

Had sardines on toast this week - top old lady lunch tbh.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2020 21:06

Fountain pens and pedantry. I'm in!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2020 21:06

And bara brith/brack - love it.

dudsville · 21/06/2020 21:22

Thank you pp re Damart!!!!

Egghead68 · 21/06/2020 21:25

Crumpets

SerendipitySunshine · 21/06/2020 21:26

String bags! They are fantastic. Thd hipster health food shop sells them and I have one in every colour.

I'm glad we can sit on benches again. I love a good sit down, and I love the ones dedicated to loved ones. I have plans to pay for a bench with my name on the back in lieu of a grave when I go to meet my maker. Far better for my kids to sit out and look at gorgeous nature than stand in a cemetery.

slipperyeel · 21/06/2020 21:29

Persephone books
Pearls
Dogs
Wellies
Church on sundays

I’m a computer programmer so like to think I mix it up a bit

ScrapThatThen · 21/06/2020 21:36

A floral tea tray that fits two cups, often on sale at the National Trust.

My (older)sister burst out laughing and said ‘I bet you only bring that out once a year don’t you’. I use it daily. Her card was marked.

jendalin · 21/06/2020 21:49

Abraid2 Which powdery smelling scents have you found? I love the idea but have difficulty identifying 'powdery smell!'

Appuskidu · 21/06/2020 21:52

This is powdery-it’s lush!

Narciso Rodriguez Narciso Poudree EDP Spray

slipperyeel · 21/06/2020 21:52

Powdery scents are
Chanel 5 and 22
Estée Lauder beautiful and azuree
Rice gauche

Binterested · 21/06/2020 22:07

I’ve been known to buy Woman & Home and Homes & Antiques.

Also as a pp has said I also love lily of the valley. And sweet peas. I know nothing of gardening but spent a lovely Sunday recently in the Regents Park Rose Garden exclaiming at all the lovely flowers and reading out the names of all the varieties from the little plaques in each bed. I was the only one who was interested but the names pleased me.

EngagedAgain · 21/06/2020 22:09

I have long hankered after a wicker basket. I had one in the 70's.

Tana433 · 21/06/2020 22:09

Do you remember that advert that ordered us to "Chuck out that chintz?" No thankyou very much, hell will freeze over before i allow my home to become "Ikea-d!" I love my floral armchair and vintage tea set and wont be changing them any time soon!

EngagedAgain · 21/06/2020 22:16

OP, Old lady things you might like - lots of tacky ornaments, floral stretchy armchair covers, those runner/doily? Looking head rest things for back of said chairs, small pattern floral wallpaper, floral curtains.

LunaNorth · 21/06/2020 22:16

mathanxiety please can I move in with you?

Binterested · 21/06/2020 22:19

Yy to not chucking out the chintz. Especially not to be replaced with some cheapo self assembly MDF crap.

sqirrelfriends · 21/06/2020 22:24

I'm definitely an old girl at heart:

Wellies
Cardigans
Pearls
Tea out of a proper tea-pot
Watercolours
Rattan furniture
Apron for baking
A lovely morning spent at the garden centre
Gardening
Classical FM
Blanket on the sofa
Anything rose or lavender scented
Tweed Twinsets

I'm 30 and also have a love of thrash metal and leather jackets.

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 21/06/2020 22:24

All of the above but also....
Crabtree and Evelyn biscuits

AdaColeman · 21/06/2020 22:56

Croque Monsieur for lunch, if sardines are in short supply!
Waitrose shortbread with lavender biscuits.
Gentleman’s Relish on toast with an aperitif.

YY to Persephone Books!
