To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

I've been looking for an uplifting supportive wireless bra. But sending them all back. Any tips, or suggestions?

ThreeFish · 21/06/2020 00:35

Ah, scrolling back I see Doreen recommended. I'll try that. Thanks.

redribbons99 · 21/06/2020 00:48

SirVixofVixHall · 21/06/2020 00:56

Cinnabar is not OL ! I remember it coming out.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/06/2020 00:57

The Doreen is wonderful but annoyingly has never been made in my size.

Nat6999 · 21/06/2020 01:13

Smith's Cremolia handcream
Talcum powder
Nivea Cream
Money in jars
Cardigans
Nightdresses
Knitting
Woman's Weekly
Mills & Boon books

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 21/06/2020 01:39

I like most of the things on this list (am not yet 40). However that's irrelevant, since I've liked most of them since my teens... I draw the line, however, at tongue, & Mills & Boon books (just not to my taste, sorry!)

The Doreen looks very comfortable. Sadly I'm a 30 band. Not a chance for me...

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 21/06/2020 01:48

Oh and I knit (I especially like Proper Wool, instead of modern acrylic rubbish cheap yarn), I like cross stitch & various needle work e.g. tapestry, embroidery etc. I sew (clothes) & I bake (very partial to a good fruit cake).

But, I have a buzzcut. Maybe I should grow it out & get a blue rinse? Thoughts?

managedmis · 21/06/2020 01:56

I recently discovered a bottle of Eden in the cupboard : it smells amazing!

managedmis · 21/06/2020 01:57

Oh god : Monty has been mentioned! Shock

Utterly swoonworthy

BitOfFun · 21/06/2020 02:11

It's great to see the The Repair shop mentioned- such relaxing viewing!

Canklesforankles · 21/06/2020 05:23

I love The Repair Shop. I also love Country Life, Period Homes and my local county magazine.
I don't watch any soap operas but I love The Archers.

MulberryPeony · 21/06/2020 08:24

Lots of my favourites mentioned - I was made up there is a new series if Agatha Raisin out and I haven’t read yet but didn’t an author pick up the Agatha Christie torch too?

Can I add aniseed balls and mint imperials? Knitted skirts. Garibaldis and fig rolls. Pop socks have their place under trousers or knee boots.

I frequently wear a pair of turquoise ball earrings left to me by my grandma.

DH also owns what he calls old man shoes (sensible and sturdy tan lace ups) for winter but draws the line at old man slippers in corduroy. We both draw the line at Izal!

MulberryPeony · 21/06/2020 08:28

Oh and a bit more modern but I adore Endeavour (makes heart eyes at Mr Evans)) and Bergerac is coming back!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/06/2020 08:31

Since I am quite an old bag, I’m glad I no longer have to feel ancient for liking
Rose and violet creams
Lavender anything (though for so long I associated the smell with a grandmother)
Sherry (favourite winter tipple, esp. around 🌲 time.)
Really comfortable shoes, though much of Hotter is still a mite too granny-ish for me
Electric blanket! A must in winter.

I forget who mentioned Astral Cream - hard to find in the shops now, my mother swore by it, and I much prefer it to Nivea - nicer smell and texture.

MrsSchadenfreude · 21/06/2020 08:49

You can get Astral cream in independent chemists.

Je Reviens perfume by Worth is definitely old lady.

I don’t think I can add anything to what has already been mentioned!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 21/06/2020 08:51

I love massive granny pants. Absolutely cannot be arsed with cheese-wire thongs.

Also:
crochet granny blankets as throws into sofas and beds
Cross-stitch
Colloidal oatmeal in the bath or oatmeal lotion as a moisturiser (Aveeno is absolutely better than any expensive high-end moisturiser)
Old-fashioned granny mixing bowls
Woods ware cups and saucers - pure 1960's village hall retro!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 21/06/2020 08:53

I feel like I have found my tribe here! Grin

SugarMiceInTheRain · 21/06/2020 08:53

Yes yes! I'm 39 and into Skechers (won't buy other trainers now) big pants, comfy bras rather than ones that enhance my shape and cosy blankets.

Stellakent · 21/06/2020 09:01

I'm in my mid 50s and YSL Paris was launched when I was in my teens and we were all wearing it - I didn't think I was an old lady yet!!!

I have discovered big knickers this year. A revelation. I thought it was my only concession to old age but this thread has made me realise I do like a nice cup of tea in a china cup, the Archers, doing a crossword....

SerendipitySunshine · 21/06/2020 09:11

I am very tempted by the WI once this is all over. What's it like?
