To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Pottery jugs with flowers in.
Taking a flask of coffee and drinking it in the car sitting in a scenic spot.
DH’s friend is going on The Repair Shop. We are all very excited to hear about it.

MissFlite · 21/06/2020 09:13

Oh loads...not yet 50

Petticoats
Cardigans
Electric blanket
Crochet
Sewing
Night cream
Early bed
Tea not Wine
Tea cakes
Proper china
Jigsaws

I also have a rocking chair Grin and am contemplating a scrapbook.

On the other hand, I'm a bit of a tech-geek and like heavy metal so...

Pearls, pearls,pearls with everything
Travel rug in the car - so useful
Old flowers- stocks and sweet peas are heaven
Radio 4 and now -OMG I’m a convert to Radio 3
Embroidery on anything
Brushed cotton tartan pyjamas
Bed socks
Hard boiled eggs with salt on a picnic
Steel tumblers for a chilled G&T on a picnic
Champagne cocktails on special occasions
Artic roll
Potted shrimps
Going to bed early with a good radio drama on a wet and windy autumn night

LunaNorth · 21/06/2020 09:27

I’ve always got a blanket on the couch to keep the chill off in the evenings.

I have a sneaky love for the poetry of Pam Ayres.

I love proper puddings with custard.

I prefer salad cream to mayonnaise.

I love a proper garden centre - not the festival of tat that most of them are these days, but a good one with decent plants.

Watching Father Brown in the afternoons with a nice cup of tea and a piece of fruit loaf while admiring the fashion of the time.

Taking a thermos flask on long car Journeys.

chubbyhotchoc · 21/06/2020 09:30

Watching old Victoria wood stand up

LunaNorth · 21/06/2020 09:35

My V-shaped pillow for reading and drinking coffee in bed.

EngagedAgain · 21/06/2020 09:37

I'm just imagining 😂😂someone fairly young, wearing (and going out in) all these suggestions TOGETHER - a knitted skirt, a crochet waistcoat in a garish colour, frumpy sandals with pop socks, with a crochet shawl or cape. Even someone elderly would look ridiculous!

About the Doreen bra - I used to stop and eye them up in a shop (they used to sell them in Debenhams, or small independents). I tried some on once but found they are rather pointy, and I wouldn't fill the ends up! I've always found M&S like that too.

@BatleyTownswomensGuild

I love massive granny pants. Absolutely cannot be arsed with cheese-wire thongs.

Also:
crochet granny blankets as throws into sofas and beds
Cross-stitch
Colloidal oatmeal in the bath or oatmeal lotion as a moisturiser (Aveeno is absolutely better than any expensive high-end moisturiser)
Old-fashioned granny mixing bowls
Woods ware cups and saucers - pure 1960's village hall retro!

I have breakfast sets of the Woods Ware in Beryl, Iris and the rarer Jasmine, plus a few other pieces. I use them daily. (This is the only photo I can find.)

I should have added the photo Grin

Can I join please? This thread has cheered me up immensely and I qualify for so many of these and can see I'm not alone especially when my DC laugh at me decanting the milk into a China milk jug.

However I am distraught at the thought of sherry going the same way as gin or prosecco. I have been drinking sherry since my teens (or actually longer as my mother recently admitted that she used to put it on my dummy when I was teething!). I am not supposed to drink alcohol these days due to medication for arthritis (how much more old lady can you get) but always have a small sherry on Sunday before Countryfile and Antiques Road show, out of a proper sherry glass of course.

P S My feminist icon is Miss Marple- she always let the the men think they knew what they were doing whilst running mental rings around them. Pure class!

Floisme · 21/06/2020 10:13

Miss Marple is one of my style crushes.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/06/2020 10:14

Stellakent yes ! Paris is a teenager scent, not an old lady one at all.

LittleTopic · 21/06/2020 10:17

@KingOfDogShite post baby I bought some stretchy pants from Next. They come up to my belly button and 13 months later I am still wearing them because they are so goddamn comfy Grin

iwilltaketwoplease · 21/06/2020 10:20

Lulu perfume,
Hair rollers every night,
Cake, cake and more cake and don't forget the tea!

AdaColeman · 21/06/2020 10:24

Would anyone like a hot buttered crumpet?

Boredbumhead · 21/06/2020 10:25

I also like country style clothing. Tweed jackets etc. I think this thread has just fortified me to give into it.

AllAboutHallowsEve · 21/06/2020 10:27

Lovely thread!

"I mean, old ladies are actually experts, aren't they? They are experts at life and we are fools."

@Canklesforankles thank you for the discounted Doreen link! I can no longer tolerate even the idea of underwired bras post-lockdown.

I just use fancy french pistachio flavour along with the usual double cream and icing sugar to make my pistachio and violet creams. Also excellent for macarons and the very fancy pistachio and rose battenberg I made for my husband's last birthday.

Tollergirl · 21/06/2020 10:33

@Floisme - she's wonderful isn't she. I make a lot of my own clothes and am currently musing on whether to go full on vintage, like Clare from Sewing Bee. Not sure whether I have the bottle though!
