To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Youth Dew

Oh stop it, you lot! About four pp have mentioned this as an old lady thing ... and it's one of my favourites. I don't think it's an old lady thing at all ... I think it's terribly classic and sophisticated ... so please stop it! Grin

chubbyhotchoc · 20/06/2020 22:33

Estée by Estée Lauder is another old lady perfume

Badoukas · 20/06/2020 22:41

Sugared almonds

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 22:47

I agree re Youth Dew, a timeless classic, so not OL.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 22:48

Yum sugared almonds, love them.

BestIsWest · 20/06/2020 22:50

Battenburg or anything with marzipan.
Bronnley lemon soaps (always have one in my knicker drawer)
Me and DH are working from home. Tea and a posh biscuit has become a new tradition on downing tools for the day.
Fox’s glacier fruits in the car glove compartment.
Roger & Gallet Jean Marine Farina soap.
Bunches of stocks.
Fluffy bed socks.
Knee strappings.

I've not read the full thread so not sure if this has already been suggested but fenjal shower mousse Grin it reminds me of my grandma in a lovely way

Ameanstreakamilewide · 20/06/2020 23:03

I'm a big fan of so many of the things already mentioned and I have been for many a year now.

I'm the oldest 40 year old you'll ever meet and I've been saying that since i was 25!

I'm comfortable enough in myself to 'be alright with it' and not really bothered if people want to take the piss out of me.

I told my manager that I thought one of our colleagues doesn't like me...he looked at me a bit puzzled, bless him. But I said 'it doesn't matter, in the slightest, cos I'm alright with it'.
I know I won't be everyone's cup of tea, eh?

Look after yourselves, all! 👍

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 23:07

I was v upset when Bronnley changed the scent of their lemon soaps. Grrr.

Peta11 · 20/06/2020 23:11

I've found my people! I'm partial to an apron, a lap blanket...especially on a car journey or watching TV, i always wear a slip under a dress, sometimes I set my hair, I drink tea from a China cup( all, day) ..also m&s do cosy bed jackets...im 34...until next week.
GREAT THREAD 😊

BestIsWest · 20/06/2020 23:11

Have they changed sirvix? Mine are a few years old now but still smell the same.

Hamsterriffic · 20/06/2020 23:16

LOVE this thread....
I’d like to add houseplants to the list please! And a basket on my bicycle.
Already mentioned but I’d like to add support for thermal vests, monty don and comfy pants.

SerendipitySunshine · 20/06/2020 23:18

Ahh Fenjal and Youth Dew. They remind me of my great grandmother. Lovely.

SerendipitySunshine · 20/06/2020 23:20

Yes, the cross your heart bras were all over the TV in the 80s. I thought they were terribly sophisticated.

wildthingsinthenight · 20/06/2020 23:23

Best thread ever. Gives me a warm fuzzy glow.
Now ordering a cross your heart bra and some violet soap!

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 23:31

BestisWest yes, they used to be lemon, and then a few years ago, not sure how long as I had struggled to find any for ages, they changed to Lemon and Neroli. Lord knows why as they are a classic soap. The smell is similar but not quite the same. My favourite soap since childhood, I always got them for Christmas, so I am annoyed.
Equally annoyed at the changes to Pears soap. I actually bought some pre- reformulation bars on ebay at six quid a bar, that is how much of a Grannie I am..

Catiopea · 20/06/2020 23:33

Yes! Anything rose scented, drawer liners, aprons (still looking for one of the head in, arms in and tie altogether types my granny had!)
Teapots, crochet, day-bed (though I refer to it as my chaise-longue or window seat, blankets & cat obligatory)
Love MSW but especially youtuber PushingUpRoses take on episodes.

I was also a member of the WI (til I had to move) & cannot recommend them enough to everyone whatever your age.

EngagedAgain · 20/06/2020 23:33

Get some 'slacks' and a 'frock' to wear 😂😂.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 23:34

Anais Anais is positively MODERN darlings. Not at all old lady.

BitOfFun · 20/06/2020 23:36

Oh Doreen!

BestIsWest · 20/06/2020 23:39

SirVix No! It’s a very distinctive smell isn’t it. DM always put one in my Christmas stocking so they make me think of her.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/06/2020 23:40

I've always liked puzzles, comfy pants & non-wired bras, so no change there.

Having learnt to crochet a few years ago, I've discovered the joy of shawls. They're actually practical, & so cosy of an evening. Great for throwing on & off, for the post-menopausal woman.

OTOH I just bought a beautiful little sports coupe.

BananasBananas · 20/06/2020 23:41

Why has nobody mentioned home made fruit cake yet??!
And Ringtons tea - where the lovely delivery man comes to the front door with his wares in a wicker basket!! So old lady but I love it and the tea is divine!!

coronarona · 20/06/2020 23:46

I'm 30.

I wear M&S full briefs
Don't own a single underwired bra anymore
I have an electric blanket
I do needlepoint and embroidery
Quite partial to a bag of mixed toffees or fruit jellies.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/06/2020 23:57

Fruit jellies....oooooooohh.....
