To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

French lavender soap and a sewing tin!

PurBal · 20/06/2020 20:58

Comfy shoes and pork tongue. I'm feeling all warm and cosy thinking about these things.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 21:00

I have been a Grannie my whole life. Proper nighties, sturdy bras, a nice cardigan and pearls.

forgetthehousework · 20/06/2020 21:01

Comfy and not particularly flattering shoes.
4711 Eau de Cologne.
Proper photo albums.

However my DH has strict instructions to put me out of my misery if I EVER buy one of those folding plastic rainbonnet things!

BlackSwan · 20/06/2020 21:11

Holy shit.
This week I:

  • bought embroidered table linen.
  • found the most amazing violet soap
  • was tickled pink watching Golden Girls
  • started a cross stitch
  • went to hospital and bored my friends and family senseless with medical stories

I’m 44 going on 84

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 21:12

Oh yes 4711, and I can recommend the 4711 soap too.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2020 21:13

BlackSwan violet soap you say.. ?? Tell me more.

Boredbumhead · 20/06/2020 21:14

Yes I always use bars if soap. My recent favourite was a rose scented old fashioned looking one. You lot sound ace and we would get on well!

Boredbumhead · 20/06/2020 21:16

My dream life would be to live in an old coastal cottage, with nothing more pressing to do than drink tea and listen to the shipping forecast on a crackling radio.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 20/06/2020 21:19

I was coming to say Anais Anais but someone beat me to it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/06/2020 21:31

Nice thread!

Big knickers - have just found my holy grail of enormous pants, so promptly bought 12 pairs

A nice cup of Earl grey and a digestive biscuit or four (plain, not chocolate)

Crocheted blankets and cushion covers, although I'm incapable of making them myself

White port, or, indeed red port (but white is better in the summer)

Yes to a petticoat/slip - I have the Jigsaw lace chemise and it's beautiful! As a 19 year old, I'd have gone out in it as a dress, with DMs!

Green Tea perfume, or Paul Smith Rose

Dusty pink nail varnish

nancybotwinbloom · 20/06/2020 21:39

Massive knickers here and a plug in heated throw.

But yourself a bottle of egg nog. It's like custard baileys. An elderly lady recommended it in m and s last Christmas. I've never looked back.

notso · 20/06/2020 21:41

I love all these things, but also it’s making me a bit sad that they’re ‘old lady things’ just because they’re comfortable. Men wear comfy pants every day without anyone telling them they’re old man pants.
DH thinks briefs are more comfortable than boxers but refuses to wear them as they are 'old man' apparently he'd never live it down in the changing room.
He also won't wear pyjamas as they are 'old man', although I'll admit that pleases me secretly.

Janaih · 20/06/2020 21:47

I wore my plastic rain hood on a stormy xmas party night out once. They all took the piss but I didnt care and it kept my barnet in place nicely.

Janaih · 20/06/2020 21:51

Oh and I don't think it been mentioned yet - badedas bubble bath. Steaming hot bliss.

WinWinnieTheWay · 20/06/2020 21:53

I definitely have beauty nostalgia. Unctuous creams (Nivea), rose water, scented powders, sleep masks, silk slips, cucumber slices, ice water splashes, Chanel No.5. YSL Paris. Pears soap.

MsRinky · 20/06/2020 21:58

My people! Today I made pistachio and violet creams whilst wearing my big knickers, a lovely cashmere cardie darned over the moth holes, a nice soft linen sack dress and one of my fine collection of aprons. I love a nice carnationy perfume, but they're so hard to find, I am rationing my last bottle of L'artisan Parfumeur Oeillet Sauvage.

ChavvySexPond · 20/06/2020 22:07

Fruitcake
Brooches
Peace and quiet
A nice sit down with a cup of tea in the afternoon. Blanket over knees and a cat are optional.
Sweeties in my handbag.
Bath salts
Badedas
Fenjal
Low legged belly button covering cotton pants
The kind of puddings you eat hot with custard
Gin and bitter lemon
I do the dark chocolate one square at a time. Am considering taking up sherry. I’ve always wanted a bed jacket. With a bow at the neck. Aprons are just practical when you have a lot of cats.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/06/2020 22:08

Recipe for pistachio and violet creams, please!

I love Badedas but have stopped buying bubble bath in plastic bottles, so can no longer indulge in it. :(

Hesperatum · 20/06/2020 22:10

Where have bed jackets gone? Really useful when you’re sitting up reading in bed!

OhTheRoses · 20/06/2020 22:12

You beat me to the Badedas. And Bronnely. A silk headscarf. Fish knives and forks. And not so nice - Goddards lineament.

Xigris · 20/06/2020 22:14

YY to bed jackets. I’m a nurse and I’m alway bemoaning the lack of bed jackets. I feel so sorry for patients sat up in bed with chilly shoulders. Dressing gowns are far too bulky and cardigans just aren’t quite right. A nice fluffy bed jacket would be just lovely. A male one could also be designed. Possible in a fetching dark tartan.

chubbyhotchoc · 20/06/2020 22:15

Lemon drizzle cake, slippers, a nice hot water bottle to warm the bed and then put on your back, you might also enjoy pear drops boiled sweets, a nice thermal vest is a boon in winter...

swampusdonkus · 20/06/2020 22:17

I have always wanted to slip my tired feet into one of those cosy looking uni-slippers. They're like booties but joined together so there is only one opening to put both feet into. Would have to remember not to try to get up and run if the doorbell rang though.

I remember the over the bath storage thing my gran had; it rested on either side of the bath and had a place for your soap, nail brush and pumice stone.
