I’ve just learned that Casablanca is not in South America at all and is, in fact in Morocco! Who knew 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️
Anyone else got any tidbits they learned far too late in life?

Timbuktu is a real place. It sounds FAR too exotic to be real.

MissFlashpants · 10/10/2017 12:56

That 'misled' is not pronounced m-eye-zild.

TheDodgyEnd · 10/10/2017 12:59

@MissFlashpants how did you pronounce it before?

And yes to Timbuktu - learnt that one a lot later than I should have to - I’m seeing a geographical theme here...

What made you think Casablanca was in South America Shock

Rainallday · 10/10/2017 13:02

Apparently you don't say the l in yolk.

formerbabe · 10/10/2017 13:06

I never knew Cape Verde was in Africa...I thought it was in Europe Blush

TheNewMrs · 10/10/2017 13:15

@formerbabe I visited Cape Verde earlier this year. Prior to booking up I thought it was in Italy Grin

TheDodgyEnd · 10/10/2017 13:19

@LouiseBrooks I don’t know it just sounded romantic like it should have been somewhere you go to watch sunsets in South America 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

OP posts:
LouiseBrooks · 10/10/2017 13:34

I suppose it does sound romantic, but if I didn't know where it was, I think I'd just assume Spain - which I guess doesn't seem as romantic as South America Smile

Bubbington · 10/10/2017 13:39

Recently found out that Immac/Veet etc is actually just strong perm lotion! How come I didn't know that?

LouiseBrooks · 10/10/2017 13:44

I didn't know that! Bloody hell. When i was a teenager in the 70s it was all the rage to have home perms (and I'm afraid I did.) Thank God my hair didn't fall out.

TheDodgyEnd · 10/10/2017 15:06

I’d love to hear more if anyone has any...? My sister (until mid twenties!!!) thoughts herons swam and herrings flew.

That recycled toilet paper is not literally toilet paper fished out of the sewers and made into toilet paper again. Its from normal paper that's been put into recycling bins and then turned into toilet paper - far more hygiene c than I initially thought

doodlejump1980 · 10/10/2017 15:14

I've put this one on other threads previous, but I only found out (when I was 35!!) that capers aren't tiny fish. My "d"h likes to bring that up at every opportunity!

EdmundCleverClogs · 10/10/2017 15:16

The 'wich' sound in Norwich doesn't get pronounced, like in sandwich. In my defence, I had been raised in the depths of Wales, so used to saying place names phonetically. I still call it Nor-which though, as it irritates my partner so much Grin.

I didn't know until told recently that human kidneys are under the rib cage, not in your lower back! Why the heck was having a gap in between your shirt and trousers always met by an adult saying 'you'll get a chill on your kidneys'??!

TheDodgyEnd · 10/10/2017 15:22

Capers aren’t tiny fish GrinGrinGrin

IDoLikeARainbow · 10/10/2017 15:29

@EdmundCleverClogs your kidneys are under your ribs but at the back by your spine.

AlbusPercival · 10/10/2017 15:31

The last post - as in posting, position, not as in mail Blush

EdmundCleverClogs · 10/10/2017 15:31

IDoLikeARainbow I know that now, I always thought they were next to the hips/pelvis area Blush.

AnnaBay · 10/10/2017 15:36

I only heard of the country Eritrea a few months ago.
I was helping DD with a project for school on flags of the world and came across it then.
They appear to keep themselves to themselves don't they? Don't hear much about Eritrea anywhere. I've never met anyone from Eritrea or heard of anyone from Eritrea either in real life or famous person/sports person etc.
Completely bypassed me that one.

EdmundCleverClogs · 10/10/2017 15:42

AnnaBay, ah you should watch more Pointless!

I've also recently learned that Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union. I didn't even realise it had a boarder with Russia...

EdmundCleverClogs · 10/10/2017 15:43

Border obviously...

That there is a connection between Paisley the Scottish town, and Paisley pattern fabric.

What makes this worse is that I live near Paisley, and had lived here for several years before this particular penny dropped. Blush

notarehearsal · 10/10/2017 16:02

AnnaBay I'd never heard of it until about ten years ago when unaccompanied children started seeking asylum here. Not a good place to live according to many of the children

If you had asked me to describe MS, I would tell you what it was.
If you had asked me to describe multiple sclerosis, I would have done the same.
However, what I didn't know was they are the same thing.
I only found out in June of this year, when someone was talking about it and using the name interchangeably. I am still shocked.

For some reason, I have always thought Multiple sclerosis was worse than MS. Mind boggles.
