DS malfunctioning

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 20:25

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

I also have a 1988 model so it's not exactly vintage, more 'used - acceptable condition'. This also malfunctions when charging at night by making a low pitched rumbling noise and nonsensical audio output. I've tried kicking it but all that does is turn up the volume.

My 1992 model has gone full circle. Its shutdown mode was severely defective for two years but this gradually remedied itself until it reached a point approximately 14 years later when it shut itself down for approximately 15 hours a day and we had major difficulty in ensuring connection to the Learning Interface. However, it has now reinstated the earlier defect and rarely shuts down before 3 a.m. and often later. It has also developed the capacity to make contact with similar models and to engage in oral communication with them at all hours; sadly it does not appear that the volume control on these models functions at all.

dida sounds like a mix up at the warehouse, but they are unwavering on their no returns option.

Namechangedforthisohyesidid · 29/09/2014 22:42

I have a 2011 model and recently a two month old model. I didn't re read any of the instruction manuals before acquiring the 2014 model but it's basically the same. Both of mine have a glitch in that they need to be kept upright otherwise they emit what sounds like the same annoying high pitched noise.

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 22:43

Volume control appears to be a major issue with both pink and blue units as does too much/not enough charging.

Surely we should be contacting Watchdog or similar.

soapy my 1960 model does this too. There's no returns or repairs on a model this old, you can't get the parts. So I've installed Spare Room 1.4 on myself. It works.

We've placed an order for a 2014 model (back in February in fact) and we went for the surprise colour choice even though it was no cheaper. Tbh we thought the delivery timescale quoted seemed manageable but as the "estimated " delivery date gets closer we're starting to think the manufacturer should by now be better at giving a more precise delivery window.
Tesco etc have only been delivering products for around 10 years yet they have it down to a 1-2 hour window whereas although this manufacturer is very well respected and have been going an awfully long time they still expect their customers to wait in for up to 5 weeks. Who do I send suggestions for improvement to???

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 22:46

I must admit I have been utilising the sofa bed 1.0 installation several times per week. However, this is also in need of upgrade/replacement as some of the integral structure appears to have broken.

Should've got it from Jonny loulou's. No squabble returns policy Wink

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 29/09/2014 22:49

Oh does anyone else find others are able to operate the dc better than you can?

I often lend mine to my parents and PILs. Both models become miraculously glitch free when operated by them. As soon as I get them back they start whining again.

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 22:50

There doesn't seem to be a complaints department Amy Maybe you could try contacting Tesco and asking if they have a similar item in stock that they could deliver in a timed slot.

Be careful though, they have previous for for making odd substitutions.

My 2013 pink model suffers from some sort of pressure sensor malfunction the second you move it emits a high pitched wail that doesn't stop until hugging pressure and often motion is used. It never seems to run out of charge either....I'm thinking some sort of super sonic battery has been fitted.
I have three older models that are more reliable, (just) though the 2012 and 2007 models had ridiculously early delivery dates, and they didn't bother to inform me, which was very inconsiderate.

Smartiepants79 · 29/09/2014 22:53

Has anyone else had problems with their unit attempting to escape. Or attacking other units during unit networking?
My 2012 Pink version seems to think that it operates better outside and has recently discovered how to open the escape hatch.
It also has faulty software that prevents it from networking with ther units without screeching and attempting to damage them in some way. Is there a fix for this? It really is very wearing.
My 2010 Dd unit is currently stuck in 'know it all' mode brought on by attending school upgrade sessions. Does the school holiday patch fix this does anyone know?

QuintessentiallyQS · 29/09/2014 22:57

You are all talking about your nintendos, right?

katandkits · 29/09/2014 22:58

I have a nice new 2014 pink 2.0 model that I acquired three months ago. So far fewer glitches than the 2012 blue 1.0 but the new one emits a loud shrieking noise when placed in the device transportation unit. This makes taking the device out of the house quite tricky.

BaffledSomeMore · 29/09/2014 22:59

The restart interval on my pink '06 model is decreasing at an alarming rate. After the first year we mastered shut down and a regular restart time seemed to be effective. Recently the shutdown time has got later and later requiring various combinations of input to get it to finish all the processes and stop completely.
The blue '11 plate is much more compliant but does have serious control issues in normal operation.

Theluckiestagain · 29/09/2014 23:00

My models (2007, 2009 respectively, both the blue version) seem to be running relatively smoothly at the moment. They have, however, developed an intermittent fault of not seeing mess and failing to deposit used items of clothing in the laundry basket - I suspect this to be a manufacturing fault as my vintage model (1970) also has this trait. It's really very annoying but I can't be arsed to upgrade. And they're really quite good entertainment value on the whole.

The newest version (5.0) also can be very slow to get going first thing and can require a gentle squeeze / minor threats / promises of shiny things to sort itself out. The 7.0 version responds incredibly quickly when plugged into the Xbox. Unfortunately, unplugging can be an issue and I'm having to distract this model with sweet goods / stickers / fresh air.

I'm glad we invested in them for sure although I'm not sure when our investments will mature. I suspect it may be a very long wait.....

BastardGoDarkly · 29/09/2014 23:04

My 2011 model has started repeating words that are said in its presence, not all of them savoury, it's rather unsettling, but I'm used to it, and too fond of it to try returns Confused

Didactylos · 29/09/2014 23:08

Totally unbothered by the substitution, just glad to have a unit delivered in good condition and packaging mostly intact. Though Ive been able to reuse many bits of hardwear from the 2008 blue model including the charging unit and cleaning system I cant stop downloading all the new clothing apps I can find.

Trollsworth · 29/09/2014 23:10

I have a 2003 model, which will not longer function without the iPod 4 installed. When this is removed, a persistant whining sound comes from the top unit, and doesn't stop for hours.

Cuddlydragon · 29/09/2014 23:13

My DS spontaneously resolved this issue at around 11 months. Another year on we have discovered that it has started to run an new automatic app which allows it to home into its night charging unit and remain on it for 11 hours. There is hope OP.

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 23:16

0.6 model has started making intermittent squeaking noises while on charge. There's no discernible activity from the unit so I'm wondering if it's harbouring mice

OP posts:
LittleBearPad · 29/09/2014 23:21

My 2012 pink 1.0 will be joined by a surprise 2014 2.0 device in December. Current operating performance of 2012 unit is good. Am hoping 2014 unit will prove compatible. Especially given the tricky returns policy.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 29/09/2014 23:28

The parental controls on my 2003 model (installed and carefully maintained over many years), have recently started to randomly shutdown and crash. It's almost as though the unit has developed an override function, enabling it to trigger violent reactions normally blocked by the controls.

I've been told that a "self control" upgrade may become available at some point in the future, but there us no sign yet.

ToothlessFanClub · 29/09/2014 23:31

Troll, I have that problem, too. 4 years down the line I've given up on the bug fixes.
Plenty of Food 2.0 patches help to keep those units happy.

Shocking delivery service, model 1998 and 2008 two weeks after planned delivery date, 2001 only received on time because I went to the depot myself.
