DS malfunctioning

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

I also have a complementary DD unit. Though slightly newer, there have been similar issues with functions and upgrades. It does frequently run at a noticeably higher pitch.

Repeat reapplication of the Nuk plug-in appears to be having temporary success as is the frequent reapplication of the HuggyTed accessory. The attachment port for this appears to also be faulty as the accessory keeps falling off and being lost in the charging unit.

Earplugs while shush patting works well blocks out most of the high pitch squeal

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 29/09/2014 20:55

How long has this fault been happening? Have you tried Calpol?

Madamecastafiore · 29/09/2014 20:57

I selling mine 3 for 2 on eBay and purchasing nice new second hand ones which have had careful lady owners.

Eva50 · 29/09/2014 20:58

I found placing it in the night charging unit and inserting a small fake energy source stopped the malfunction in the 1995 and 2006 models. This did not however work for the 1997 model as the fake energy source kept being dislodged although after several years it was stuck so fast we thought it might require surgical removal. This model continued to malfunction frequently for a number of years. Strangely this model malfunctions less now than the other two.

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 20:58

Calpol has had no effect Sad I think its just been too long since a successful recharge and now the software has gone funny.

My 1997 model has developed the opposite fault.
Cannot be started in the mornings and the speech function has regressed to its 1999 state.

NorksAreMesssy · 29/09/2014 21:00

genuine LOL at geraldine's box :)

I am PISSING myself here! Grin

Me too Norks Grin

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 29/09/2014 21:02

Oh yes. I remember, they are so bloody temperamental arent they?

I used to take my model out in my 2002 Peugeot. The two mechanical items seem to have a positive effect on one another. No idea why, but I just never questioned it.

It stopped that hideous shrieking noise within minutes.

ToothlessFanClub · 29/09/2014 21:05

I have a 1998 DD version and the shrieking noises have subsided into grumbling noises by now. Battery recharge over night is a big issue, faults are common at weekends.

Azquilith · 29/09/2014 21:05

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Biscuitsneeded · 29/09/2014 21:05

Friends of mine had a malfunctioning DS and swore by regular applications of Medised. Shame this has effectively been taken off the market for the most recent models of DS.

My 2005 and 2007 models both malfunctioned for several years and then spontaneously resolved the night-time volume issues. However, I think the programming is a little faulty in both of them and the 2007 version often requires a forced shut down.

ToothlessFanClub · 29/09/2014 21:06

The 2001 DS is still shrieking.

Eva50 · 29/09/2014 21:07

The speech function must be a common problem with the 1997 model norks although mine boots up ok in the morning. It's the 1995 model I have this problem with and the volume control on that one is f**d.

skylark2 · 29/09/2014 21:08

Mine both shut down much more efficiently if nobody was watching them, however I understand this is relatively unusual, and it certainly didn't always work.

Jiggling to removed trapped air bubbles is traditional, but older models (yours would count as older in this case) don't normally have this problem.

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 21:09

DH appears to have achieved an emergency shutdown on our blue 2014 0.6 model. Neither of us are quite sure how we achieved this, DH maintains he just pressed things until it stopped Smile

Apparently there was also a large output from the waste receptacle so an out of hours service was required.

I am LOVING this thread! Grin

LeapingOverTheWall · 29/09/2014 21:13

skylark - my 93 version also shut down at night much more effectively if it was left alone for a few minutes

letsgotothebeach · 29/09/2014 21:14

Very good - especially geraldine !!

My 2007 model has a terrible mode of 'answerback' along with a 'strop' mode that involves it slamming doors at intervals usually waking the 2011 model. The 2011 model is rather like a furby in that it goes off at inopertune times and is loud and irritating. It also snores.
