DS malfunctioning

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 20:25

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

I have the blue 1997 unit - it functions fairly well but is heavy on the power supply - unfortunately it functions well at night but really isn't responsive in the daytime, and all sorts of glitches occur. It appears connected in a direct fashion to the refrigerator resulting in rapid depletion of its contents. It also shares a connection with the pink model of the same year. Sometimes I have come home from work early to find an electrical storm taking place between the two units. On the upside both units have a prodigious gcse output but have ordered condoms to prevent replication of the two units Hmm. I also have a more recent version of the blue model - circa 2003 - I wish I could state confidently that this model was an improvement but in fact it just seems to me to be a smaller more recent version with an additional whining sound when faced with peas. This unit seems diametrically opposed to the pink units however. Interestingly there appears to be a relationship between the two units with a differing connection - sometimes they interface and other times they try to close each other down. It's been a long while now - I seem to have lost the manual and receipt for these goods - I sometimes consider return to manufacturers but am unsure of a refund and am certain the volume control is broken on both sets. Also despite their faults am rather attached to them.

I think my 2001DD model has crashed following self installation of Tumblr with a Japanese upgrade.

Now all it does is constantly display pictures of nubile young men which have something to do with the shipping.

The colour has faded from pink to a sort of grubby black.

ToothlessFanClub · 29/09/2014 23:37

MrsCakes, do let us know when you got your hands on a Self Control upgrade, please. I guess there are many potential customers here.
Could be your niche to start your own business. Maybe offer an Excellent Choices Upgrade and an Self Discipline upgrade too.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 29/09/2014 23:39

I am very interested to read the consumer reports from other customers like me with the older versions of this model. My oldest is a 1995 DS model and my latest problem is the apps which seem to download automatically - I certainly never clicked on any buttons onscreen to download them. I particularly dislike the Facebook modification which seems to have auto-linked to Clubbing 1.0 and - far worse as this one happens in the primary base station - to the Pizza 5am upgrade. That along with the whine generated by the Car Keys Request 24/7 app is driving us to distraction. Like others though, we are setting all our hopes on the University 2014 upgrade which we are told guarantees a return to undisturbed nights although does seem very expensive!

MrsCakesPrecognition · 29/09/2014 23:43

I think that I need to increase the speed of the rationality processor before attempting further upgrades. Its going to be a long term project rather than a quick and dirty fix.

jezzapaxmanslovechild · 29/09/2014 23:45

Working - we are soon to install the car application so will await the car key request with trepidation. Has your car application crashed yet?

BlackeyedSusan · 29/09/2014 23:46

my 2008ASD/SPD model has been malfunctioning since the recent return to the learning interface. They claim to have no knowledge that the ds is the ASD version with the SPD also installed and seem to think this version has reverted to the NT version. needless to say this is causing much malfunctioning on return to the home base and there has been a definite increase in noise emitence, sudden floppiness in structure resulting in collapse to the floor and malfunction in interacting with other units function.

ToothlessFanClub · 29/09/2014 23:47

Shame, I need a quickfix for my 1998 GCSE model. Maybe I can attempt a Diligence upgrade myself. And try to delete the FanFiction app.

TheDoctorSandshoesAndGrandad · 29/09/2014 23:48

My 2006 model arrived later than estimated.

Could have been worse, I suppose. At least it wasn't thrown over a fence by Yodel...

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 29/09/2014 23:50

Jezza - actually to give this model its due, it does function very well when the Car Key app is running. I would say it is probably operating within it's most sensible parameters when that app is operational - quite different from the volatile operation it has when for example Rugby 2.0, Beer 3.0 or Jaegermeister 4.0 is running - and it doesn't ever run parallel with those last two somehow which I think is good news!

aturtlenamedmack · 29/09/2014 23:52

A very late Grin for goldfishes post!

tabulahrasa · 29/09/2014 23:53

Ah, it's not a fault I'm afraid, it's just a quirk.

It does usually disappear after you run them in for a bit.

jezzapaxmanslovechild · 29/09/2014 23:55

Toothless - I tried to install the motivation package on my 2003 model with limited success to maximise gcse output as it was competing for memory with the Facebook programme. Fortunately the pink model it shares an interface with already had the motivation programme up and running and this transferred itself with the benefit of face time to my model and I was really pleased with the results

jezzapaxmanslovechild · 29/09/2014 23:57

Working - that's reassuring! I was thinking about downsizing and installing it a bicycle! Grin

Stratter5 · 30/09/2014 00:01

I found a swift reboot, followed by threats to delete the iPhone 5 upgrade, enabled my 1997 DD model to resume downloading the GCSES upgrade. It still emits a highly annoying high pitched whine, often coupled with severe leakage from the vision orbits, and an odd drumming noise from its peripherals. The A Level upgrade is already proving troublesome, and the unit has lately developed a low level grumbling noise.

The 1993 DD model is currently at the Upgrade Warehouse, however it is still managing to make regular contact via multiple payment notifications, I can't be the only one with this particular glitch?

jezzapaxmanslovechild · 30/09/2014 00:06

Ah yes - I was wondering about the A level upgrade, and am also experiencing a low whining noise. Does this improve does anyone know?

NerfHerder · 30/09/2014 00:14

I have a 2006 unit, pink version, and for ages we had problems with shutdown, wouldn't go into sleep mode, no matter what we tried (the shriek with that version was terrible, too!). One day, we've no idea why, it just started working normally- we didn't do anything different Confused it just started functioning normally.
But now we get this problem where it just comes on in the middle of the night for no reason! It must be some sort of glitch, where it makes random noises (shriek has ended) but not usual speech mode, then switches off again.

We've never, ever had any issues with our later version (it's a 2009 one- maybe they'd fixed the shrieking bug by then?). That version has a battery problem though- it never charges properly, only takes a little power, then indicator shows 'full' Confused but it conks out again after a few hours, so definitely needed more power.

Stratter5 · 30/09/2014 00:24

I found the A Level upgrade exacerbated the Tantrum Glitch, and Vision Orbit Leakage, I was very concerned, but it seemed to peak then suddenly successfully upgraded. Such a relief, although the upgrade seemed to come with a stealth install of Excessive Party Mode, IHaveNothingToWear , and worst of all, Empty Wallet.

I can recommend the Automatic Fridge Lock add on.

Ppinks · 30/09/2014 00:33

Trying to order mine turned into a nightmare!
While trying to order the lucky dip model for a long time I could not get past the checkout stage, the page kept refreshing to the start again?!.
Finally I managed to 'checkout' and a after a few missed delivery cards I was delighted with my blue 2009 DS Model. I must have ticked the subscription box when checking out because we had a another delivery a blue 2011 model. I do find that both Models sometimes malfunction with each other which causes them to overload, but I've found that the added apple upgrade resets them back into their normal model.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 30/09/2014 01:04

Ppinks, you are right, the order process can be a nightmare. We had so many difficulties getting our order processed that in the end we went to a specialist supplier and spent £££. Worth it in the end, but definitely not the simple 1-click checkout described in biology lessons at school!.

AGnu · 30/09/2014 01:08

We had issues with delivery for both of ours. Ordered both for home delivery, contact was made less than 24 hours before delivery to confirm it was on it's way. 2011 model seemed to be as scheduled until there were a few last minute quibbles which looked like we'd have to go to the depot to sign for it. Arrived shortly thereafter but it was suggested to us that we might take it along to the nearest workshop just to make sure the confusion about place of delivery hadn't disrupted it's systems.
2013 model was slightly more problematic. Again ordered for home delivery but shortly after we'd be informed to expect it imminently there was a glitch in the delivery system so we were again asked to proceed to the depot. They even sent us a van to get us there. There was some confusion though - I found our package in the back of the van.

We've not had too many problems with the scream malfunction, although DS2 is currently about half way through the first dental upgrade - it's been going on for months & very little seems to help. DS1 has developed a "Whatareyoudoingnow" glitch and seems stuck on a loop. I barely have a chance to instigate my feedback response before it starts again.

All in all, they're incredibly frustrating & tiring during this set-up process but I'm told that once you get the worst of the kinks worked out they start to run more smoothly. We've recently noticed our models interacting with each other which hadn't happened before. Here's hoping they'll form a positive LAN connection & not infect each other with malware too often.

Thistledew · 30/09/2014 01:21

I am attempting to make an order for one of these devices, but despite removing the service block at the beginning of this year, I don't seem to be able to progress my order. I gather the order forms are sent in a monthly periodical, and the classic version I acquired a few years ago is willing to complete his side of the application process, but I don't seem to be getting the monthly order slots I was expecting.

I have been told that these devices are very life-enhancing despite their faults, and that I would be very pleased to acquire one, but reading the reviews above I'm not wholly convinced. Can anyone reassure me that it is worth pursuing an acquisition, and give any hints or suggestions as to how I can complete my order?

soapybubbles123 · 30/09/2014 02:32

0.6 unit has randomly restarted despite efforts to load it with fuel prior to charging.

An attempt to return it is looking ever more attractive despite the somewhat battered and repaired original packaging.

GnomeDePlume · 30/09/2014 06:57

I do hope that the ordering system has improved it was so unreliable when we ordered ours.

First time around we had to place the order many times. The order would be accepted then just as we thought we were on our way it would be cancelled. Eventually our first model was delivered in 1995.

Strangely our 1998 model was delivered after placing just the one order.

Mind it all went wrong again as we didnt even place an order for our Y2K model. We just got a notice to say that it was on the way.

Go figure!

MrsKCastle · 30/09/2014 07:34

Thistledew, definitely persevere. I have two pink models- 2008 and 2014 versions. Despite their many faults and glitches, I wouldn't be without them. Keep trying to place your order- the company is notoriously unreliable, but I'm sure your model will arrive eventually.

Like others, delivery was an issue for us as well. For our first model, we ordered home delivery, but the product became stuck in the packaging. It became necessary to order a van and return to the depot for extraction.
