DS malfunctioning

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 20:25

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

My household also contains an ancient 1962 unit.
As an antique it has some curiosity value, but the noise it emits when in total darkness is quite worrying.

NorksAreMesssy · 29/09/2014 22:05

My 1994 version seems to have been made by Apple...at least the apple logo is all I ever see when looking at it

GnomeDePlume · 29/09/2014 22:06

We just managed to get our 1995 model to operate smoothly when it self-installed an academic upgrade which has to be operated off-site. I am hoping that this off-site operation does involve regular re-charging but I have my doubts.

SantanaLopez · 29/09/2014 22:06

My model needs a reboot too. It knows lots of words, but is stuck saying No. It just goes on a loop for hours :(

LeapingOverTheWall · 29/09/2014 22:07

I've found older models are quite useful when applying the Teen upgrade to newer versions. In my case (all pink models) there's a sharing of accessories and a helpline for advice on applying stealth mode. I understand from friends with an older blue/newer pink combination that the blue version can help prevent faulty pink/non-related blue interaction.

It's the automatic timer function on my 98 DD model that's causing us headaches right now. We'd programmed it to switch off/recharge from 9pm to 6am every night, but we keep on finding it still up and running at midnight or later, then however hard we press the 'on' button we can't get it started in the morning. And when you keep your finger down on that button it makes some very weird noises - almost sounds human. Spooky!

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 22:07

I had to return mine to the workshop twice in four weeks. Apparently the insurance for major faults is automatically included but as all models are 'sold as seen' there is no return/exchange option, not even within 28 days of purchase (as mine was).

My 1997 DD model functioned pretty well until it was approx 14, it then developed a persistent whine, and a refusal to cooperate. This caused no end of trouble at the Software Correction Headquarters Of Operational Learning, and a major malfunction in the air intake area resulted in a partial shutdown for 3 months. Normal responses have now resumed, but this is only expected to last a short while.

Pipbin · 29/09/2014 22:11

Will confess that I haven't read the thread but I returned my DS original type to Nintendo and they replaced it. By that time the DS lite was out and they actually sent me a new lite rather than the older version.

NotYouNaanBread · 29/09/2014 22:11

It's important that you do NOT try to sync a 2011 model to an apple device when it is adjacent to a earlier (I.e. 2009) model as something (probably to do with the Bluetooth, I imagine) causes that high pitched noise to start up first in the 2009 but shortly after in the 2011 also.

2011's also fall out of the charging unit at night sometimes & have to be reinserted, and sometimes reset with a sippy cup.

Didactylos · 29/09/2014 22:11

Ive just had the latest 2014 model delivered and it seems really glitchy - I am struggling to get time to read the instruction manual fully as it needs charging/maintenance every few minutes. Plus the volume control is definitely broken.

The 2008 model however appears to have a successful update of its reading softwear and now downloads a considerable amount of own content prior to shutdown at night.

Pipbin · 29/09/2014 22:12

Sorry, I've just realised that you are indeed not talking about a Nintendo product but an actual baby. I blame the IVF drugs that block babies out of my mind right now.

HoldenMcGroin · 29/09/2014 22:16

Pipbin I hope you can get the very newest, most deluxe model as soon as it is released x

Annunziata · 29/09/2014 22:16

Grin Pipbin

We have had significant problems with the Apple technology too. Each one looks the same and yet each model makes very loud noises when another model dares to look at its Apple.

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 22:18

Sleep mode successfully commenced Grin

My 2014 pink version 0.1 has been plugged in since about 7pm and shows no sign of shutting down. Despite this, she will still turn on at 3am for a further charge.

My 2011 blue model is currently shut down but had shrieking and leaking issues most of the afternoon.

LineRunner · 29/09/2014 22:21

My '96 unit has just been despatched to the upgrade warehouse, and because of unforseen changes in terms and conditions it's going to cost £9k just for the initial download.

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 22:22

Thanks Pipbin wishing you a shiny new 2015 model manufactured one way or another.

Did anyone else have issues with early/late delivery? Mine was 3 weeks early and we very nearly weren't in that day Grin Trying to find the delivery depot in another county where they had no record of the item to be delivered...Confused

OP posts:
HoldenMcGroin · 29/09/2014 22:24

My 2003 version was nearly a fortnight late, we had to ring delivery every 24 hours, lots of eye-rolling and tutting

littledrummergirl · 29/09/2014 22:28

We have the 2000 model in blue and it seems to need constant refueling although its recharge works well now.

The 2001 blue model used to wake us up with that shrieking on and off for years but seems to have fixed itself now.

The 2004 pink model is difficult to program and never does as you like without going through a multitude of options- none of which match your request- first.

My dsis has this years model in blue and it makes the wailing noise every time she leaves the room. It just seems to know.
I had to take it out in its portable enviromentally friendly wheel attachment this morning just so she could have a shower in piece!

springlamb · 29/09/2014 22:32

Oh Norks I like a vintage model too.
My 1967 version still works perfectly well. The outer casing is somewhat damaged and a lot of the decal has fallen out or off.
However, something funny has happened to its sleep mode. More or less as soon as I put it down on the sofa these days it goes into sleep mode. It stays awake if constantly handled but I don't need it much nowadays so I just allow the sleep mode to keep malfunctioning.
I got it secondhand and Luckily it's previous owner is still around, she'd probably take it back if I didn't want it anymore or upgraded to a new model.

fledtoscotland · 29/09/2014 22:32

I'm so glad everyone else has problems with their models. My 2007 and 2008 blue models both have broken volume controls as well as being very temperamental when battery is running low. The 2008 switches off quicker than the 2007 when left in the dark with a Disney DVD however the 2007 model does have the benefit of being able to operate a vacuum cleaner

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 22:32

littledrummergirl They do seem to know don't they, it's almost like they've become sentient Confused

OP posts:
Didactylos · 29/09/2014 22:34

I didnt have any issues with the delivery arrangements but we had been promised that a blue 2014 unit was packed: imagine our surprise when we received a pink model. Obviously this has required some adjustment on our part, but apparently once you have taken it out of the packaging it is non returnable, and we have grown extremely attatched to it.

pointythings · 29/09/2014 22:36

My 2001 model is scaring me - it's a DD model, has some problems on its outer casing (skin) and the GCSE 1.0 module needs an upgrade to incorporate the Making An Effort 2.1 interface, but apart from that it has been amazing. I wasn't aware that I had upgraded to Entertaining A Toddler 2.3 and Doing Homework Again Because I Made A Shoddy Job Of It First Time Round 3.1 module, but both have functioned very well recently, blocking the default You Don't Love Me And Life Is So Stressful OS.

My 2003 model has been infected with the Growth Spurt Hell virus - she's shooting up an inch every 3 months, sprouting boobage and hair and is as moody as anything. Fortunately the Still Need Cuddles patch is working.

This is an epic thread.
