DS malfunctioning

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

The 2004M model is amazing. No real malfunctions, and is just reliable as anything. The 2011F model however, man alive it's a volatile piece of kit. Ours particularly had a glitch whereby we have to repeat commands on loop until they are acknowledged. Acknowledgement doesn't mean the command is followed however. Have you tried speaking your MIL? If not, you can try mine. She knows everything about all models and all malfunctions and it'll turn out to be the users fault.

wheresthelight · 01/10/2014 11:41

ah Brew my Mil support service is no longer with us but I do have the DM support package who also thinks everything is user error and has a far superior way of doing everything!! I am currently looking for the contract so I cam terminate but I suspect a very high cancellation fee

Fillybuster · 01/10/2014 12:01

OP, I sympathise.

The thing to bear in mind is that each of these models comes with a unique set of faults quirks and it takes time to understand how each unit can be managed for maximum efficiency.

For example, our 2008F unit could not be switched to standby or sleep mode in company and would emit an increasingly high-pitched whine accompanied by alarming screeches until left alone. Of course in the early days it took a while to stop fiddling with the settings and trust that it would settle when I left the room....

We were fortunate that our 2005M unit, when finally delivered and despite the damaged packaging, was actually very easy to set up. However we are still struggling to figure out the settings on the 2010F unit which we suspect is highly faulty, with an over-sensitive screech feature, and doesn't conform to the settings of the other two units in our group.

Good luck Grin

My model severely malfunctioned this morning, my blue 1998 model expressed an interest in hearing my opinion and took the advice offered.
Should I be worried or is this actually a normal feature that I have not noticed before?

misdee · 01/10/2014 12:42

My Y2k model constantly malfunctions and demands charging via various means.
2002 model is functioning better and can be left for short periods of time.
2005 edition is currently in cling on mode when comes back from daily maintenance with other 04/05 models. Really concerned about this version as it gives is the most hassle.
2008 edition is missing various component and is very sensitive to usual charging methods so has to be charged carefully, and has a back up of epipen.
The blue 2011 model is very erratic with regards to shutting down and charging in the day. Seems to be incompatible with 2008 and 2012 models.
2012 model currently in huge malfunction mode and is being coaxed back into functioning with calpol0.1 and neurofen0.6 administered regularly. Seems to be overheating regularly.

WhizzPopBang · 01/10/2014 12:54

I'm rather partial to my V1 pink 2013 model, it does have a very lovely interface. Its functionality is definitely improving with time, but we did have a lot of technical glitches with it for quite a while - I'd have taken it back if I hadn't lost the receipt. In the end we called out an engineer and they did a total system reboot. Not entirely successful but the recharging and battery life are definitely better than they were. Its communication app is still running in beta but there seems to be a software update every so often so hopefully we'll be able to upgrade to the full version at some point. Nothing wrong with it's audio system though, speakers are working just fine!

MrsCurrent · 01/10/2014 13:00

Ds 2004 model, although damaged by the delivery driver and has some minor outer casing glitches and outside input required for the operating software to produce the right output, is a fine piece of kit, beautiful to behold and a delight to own. Deciding we were clearly experts with this equipment we ordered a 2008 model, this one seems to have a seriously upgraded operating system which does not require much time on the charging system at all. You cannot let this model ds out of your site as if it does not have a captive audience and constant input, it will automatically seek it out. With the hidden stealth mode (so secret that educational experts can't even find it, and the daily letters from these experts are testament to them trying to manage this malfunction) this model cannot be left unsupervised.

Kemlex13 · 01/10/2014 13:05

I currently hold 2 different models, both pink. Oldest 3 and a half years still malfunctions in the charging unit and one will be a yer on Monday, hoping the garantee is still valid, been making the screeching noise 24/7 for 10 days now with added runny discharge from top and bottom... I've another on pre order due for release March 2015. I'm not holding out much hope. Calpol 1.0 along side neurofen 2.5 does help though, highly recommend!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/10/2014 13:16

Blot - fear not. This is a sign that your '98 model may be nearly 'run in'.

My '99 model - which isn't blue but would malfunction severely if described as 'pink' - is increasingly exhibiting this behaviour. Rather alarmingly it now expects me to provide input on subjects such as calculus in order for it to function at maximum efficiency.

muuum29 · 01/10/2014 13:38

I have a 2003F model and have found the most irritating thing is that whenever I manage to fix one fault, two more occur with alarming regularity - are these models designed this way?? It took me years to fix the intermittent screaming tone, which was then replaced with a more intermittent but no less irritating whining noise, which took years to fix again, which has now been replaced by very little noise from the unit but instead the unit will repeatedly forget instructions that were programmed into it or given verbally recently.

I expected to do less programming of the unit the longer I had it, not more. Unit has recently lost the Tidying function, despite repeatedly having loaded it over the years, yet rather than request Tidying programming the unit constantly needs input into the 'friends', 'homework' and 'howdoIgetmyselfcleanandreadyforschool' utilities. The worst part is that whenever I contact the DM or the DSIS services they will only recommend programming these functions in and won't accept my answer that I already have Sad. The 'DP' engineer that was sent years ago is quite frankly useless and seems to have less knowledge of the unit programming than I have - do I need a new engineer?

Bouttimeforwine · 01/10/2014 13:46

My 2000 and 2002 versions were top of the range when brand new. I think I was upgraded FOC. They had the extra design features which made them super desirable. I was envied by my friends who were only able to purchase the regular models.

However, whilst still in ok working order, they now seem to need more maintenance than my friends inferior models. I have aired my greviances and am in the middle of the complaints procedure. I seem to be getting nowhere. Has anybody any tips on how to get my complaints recognised and the defects rectified? I don't really want to exchange for a new version. I will be happy for modifications to my current models, as I still quite like some of the extra design features..

girlwhowearsglasses · 01/10/2014 13:50

Be thankful you didn't buy the multi-license 3DS package OP!

All three dimensions of ours 2006-2008 setup seem to refuse to shut down altogether, and they don't network too well either

BlotOnTheLandscape · 01/10/2014 13:56

Errol I am thankful that my model understands calculus and is able to explain it to the younger model who is now learning it. They clearly have an upgrade that my model DF and DM failed to apply to me.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 01/10/2014 14:00

For some reason, both my units default to sharing a single external hard drive for all memory functions. Is there a way of forcing units to use their internal memory, instead of expecting the parent unit to manage all memory processing?

muuum29 · 01/10/2014 14:35

MrsCakes - please, whatever you do, do not try any repair files labelled 'GoOutAndLeaveThemToIt', 'LetThemForgetTheyllLearn' or similar. I was advised to by my DM service on the explicit reassurance that my unit could process such repairs but it was a disaster - the unit always malfunctions due to a memory processing error and you are then required to fix the error immediately, regardless of inconvenience, otherwise the unit will start roaring or leaking eye fluid, possibly both. Plus, any attempt to explain the unit error to others will result in them issuing you with either BadParent.exe or PityingStare.jpg.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 01/10/2014 14:40

Thanks muuum29 - great advice Grin.

QueenOfThorns · 01/10/2014 14:58

We've been very pleased with our early 2014 pink model overall, although it took us 8 months to work out how to activate sleep mode. Definitely worth the visit to the specialist supplier when the usual ordering methods were unsuccessful!

Recently, however, it has become apparent that an upgrade to the anti-virus software may be necessary. It is currently demonstrating copious leakage from the nasal port, the infamous cough1n and sneez1n malfunctions, and a high-pitched noise whenever it loses visual contact with the parent unit, however briefly. Can I get a patch for this, or do I have to wait for it to resolve itself?

IfYouAreHappyAndYouKnowIt · 01/10/2014 15:23

QueenOfThorns the cough1n and sneez1n can often be relieved by the addition of calpol1.0.
The noise when losing contact with the parental unit should resolve itself in time.

RandomFriend · 01/10/2014 15:57

I have three earlier models, from the 1990s.

Overall, I am rather pleased with all of them. However, on the 1994M model, I searched for, but never located, the "off" button.

RockMummy · 01/10/2014 16:08

Does anyone have an aging model from the 1930s of the parent variety? I find them much in need of new memory installation and balance control. Sadly neither are made any longer. They are currently more of a concern to me than my 2003 blue variety who incessently kicks a round thing around when not attached to apple technology. At least that one is performing to type. ALthough I suspects faults may be on the horizon in around two years time.

dementedma · 01/10/2014 16:36

Two 1930s models here too and definitely losing power, memory and other functions. Incompatible with modern apps and require considerable time re-tuning and re-programming in order to perform basic functions. Fortunately 2002 blue model is proving to be very useful as an interface with 1930s pink model which is very sweet.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/10/2014 16:43

I had to return my DH67 model back to the original warehouse in Canada for an overhaul and stress-testing. It's taken a full week, and I know that the OldUniFriendsParty module was stretched to capacity. I'm hoping that the interface with version DMIL42 and DFIL41 did not have compatability problems.

mateysmum · 01/10/2014 17:24

Does anybody else have the blue 1959 model? This was one of the early models and did not come with full functionality installed. However, it has proved very receptive to upgrades and new systems and has given pretty good service for 25 years. The DIY app which downloads when the model is about 30years old is particularly valuable and now even though the colour is fading a bit, all the rough edges and corners have been rubbed off, which makes it very comfortable for 1961 pink models to work with.

BlotOnTheLandscape · 01/10/2014 17:46

demented yes, we are having that experience with the four 1930s models that live near us, it's all getting very complicated and the young models living with us are getting less keen on interaction as a result.
