DS malfunctioning

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

My 2013 ds model emits far less shrieking than the 2011 dd model. But has a nighttime leaking issue the pink one didn't have.

I've tried applying pampers for its nighttime recharge but it always leaks.
Any attempt to refresh with pampers during the recharge causes at least one hour of shrieking.

My units synch to Apple devices in the evenings, and could possibly charge from being plugged into them overnight if left that way.

LineRunner · 29/09/2014 21:22

My 1998 blue model has attached itself permanently to a device known as an iPod through its aural input interface.

98 and 2001 models are currently watching 'The 100'

It looks distinctly unpleasant, I hope it doesn't induce the bad dream program.

The 'tiger, bad dream' rogue program, finally seems to have been fixed and The 2001 model recharges without needing a 2am hug patch.

LeapingOverTheWall · 29/09/2014 21:34

My pink 02 version also has the iPod add-on, but it seems to have damage it's inbuilt aural function, as it only responds with "whaaaaaa" to all aural stimulus. Removal of the add-on causes a verbal function loop of "snotfairyoursomean" which I can't find as an error code in the red handbook

SaucyJack · 29/09/2014 21:36

I have polished both screens on my model and swapped the case for a thicker cleaner one, and for now it appears to be in standby mode.

Where's the wine?

AmpleRaspberries · 29/09/2014 21:38

I found that whilst I just accepted the night time malfunction of my 2013 model assuming that was how it was supposed to work, DH was far less accepting.

As with all technology in our house he Googled a manual and fixed it. Still a few glitches, but for the most part it seems fixed.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/09/2014 21:39

both mine make an intermittent wailing and whining noises at any point in a 24hour period.

the 2008ASD/SPD version requires regular refuelling, in larger quantities than my other version. solved the high pitched squeaking when put in the recharging unit with the insertion of onejelly baby into the refuelling portal every 24 hours. docking at the computer seems to reduce the amount of wailing.

it does seem to have developed a fault common to the blue models that are approximately 6 years old: random references to poo, stinky bottoms and burps.

TrousersSchmowsers · 29/09/2014 21:39

Have you tried putting the Hoover on when the DS unit starts malfunctioning? Don't apply suction to the DS itself in case any small moving parts are damaged. However the noise and vibration from the vacuum engine often have a regulating effect on the state of a DS.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 29/09/2014 21:39

Oh don't bother with the red handbook, that's just there for the hv's to write notes in while they attempt to fix the malfunctions.

I've always found the fixes they suggest actually increase the shrieking noise.

dementedma · 29/09/2014 21:43

I have very old 1990 and 1993 models. All glitches now ironed out and functioning independently, more or less, other than the need to top up with random 20 quid notes or bank transfer interface. Stick with the new models, they will settle down in about 20 years to become much loved family property.

HoldenMcGroin · 29/09/2014 21:44

The Y2K version is running well in this household, highly reccommend models from then. We had a glitch a couple of years ago when an app called Mine Craft had to be deleted and re-installed with a timer which did the trick.

DramaAlpaca · 29/09/2014 21:48

Great thread Grin

ToothlessFanClub · 29/09/2014 21:50

My 2008 pink model has no shriek malfunction but had - from day one - a broken Off-switch. Battery recharge overnight works brilliantly - in just under 9 hours back to 100%.

Annunziata · 29/09/2014 21:50

I have a selection of seven models from the 90s to last year and they have all been temperamental at best.

It gets especially glitchy when the pink models find out about the blue models and the blue models find out about the pink models. This happened about 14 years old. I think the signals confused them all- it was pandemonium.

WookieCookiee · 29/09/2014 21:52

My units (2044 and 2007) have recently downloaded the "why" and "no" operating systems which seem to kick in when asked to recharge; these seem to come with the "it's not fair" app preinstalled but I have found this can be disabled by recharging both units simultaneously and/or threatening to remove the FIFA 1 add on.

feckitall · 29/09/2014 21:56

I have the early models from '88, 89 and 91. The 88 version had numerous functioning faults that have continued to malfunction to this day. Nighttime malfunctions most common. Numerous reboots were required. 89 and 91versions early programming seemed to iron out the glitches. 88 version has now been added to by second generation versions.

And this is a brilliant thread!!! Grin

Clutterbugsmum · 29/09/2014 21:57

My 2004 model is very much stuck in 'Greta Garbo' mode at the moment as she wants to be alone.

My 2007 model is trying to set up a dictatorship with herself chief dictator, she has moved on from hostage negations.

As for the 2009 male version is well a boy.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/09/2014 21:58

What is this volume controp function some of you are alkingabout? ds does not seem to have one of these installed. perhaps someone has deleted the relevent icon?

missorinoco · 29/09/2014 21:58

I wasn't allowed to exchange my 2007 version either. Have they not heard of consumer rights?

In a fit of madness I acquired three over time, and they all leaked in the early stages. The frequency of the shriek reduced, and the timing changed, but the volume setting then malfunctioned and seems to be switched to loud permanently. Drains batteries too.

Quite cute though, and sometimes very entertaining.

After the third the packaging wasn't suitable for recycling either.

soaccidentprone · 29/09/2014 21:58

I am very worried about my 1995 model.

It can't hold as much charge as usual, ie it normally holds about 10kg of charge, but it is now only holding about 7kg. Does this mean it will need charging more frequently, or does this particular model become more efficient with age?

In addition, it is becoming less temperamental. This makes life a lot easier.

Not sure if this will be the same across of the models though Grin

LineRunner · 29/09/2014 21:59

Wookie, you have a cyberdyne model from the future? Respect.

springlamb · 29/09/2014 22:00

My 1994 version was damaged whilst in transit. Initially it took a lot of physio and OT to get it working, and sometimes it has had to go back to the workshop for various internal tweakings. However, it has always been a pleasure to have in the house. Actually quite sad when I had to retire it to university very recently.
Now my 2001 purchase, supposedly with the fully updated and working arms, legs and operating system, has been dodgy from day one, many times I have complained about this. Clearly arms and legs are not fully functional as it does not get out of bed, exercise or do anything useful. The operating system is totally out of sync as it often generates rude comments at me.

Annunziata · 29/09/2014 22:02

What is this volume controp function some of you are alkingabout? ds does not seem to have one of these installed.

If you've got an older model, maybe about 13 or so, a really handy tip is to buy a set of earphones. You know those jacks just below the air inhalers and above the noise-emitter, that can be covered by the hair accessory? Plug the earphones in there. The only problem is that it's expensive to maintain the earphones, but as a volume control function- you can't beat it.
