DS malfunctioning

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

Erm, I think mine was a case of delivery to the wrong address stinking Blush

But I luffs it, even with all the malfunctions and glitches so I didn't try to find out where the mistake had occurred.

Fortunately there were no BOGOFs on at the time.

"Repeated nighttime ordering system."

Took me a moment...Grin

Does anybody else find themselves hankering after another model once the original has entered the independent functioning phase?

I find myself making do with a tamagotchi, which certainly requires less complex and expensive software, but I do sometimes miss the intensive user experience which my 1996 model offered.

FlossyMoo · 30/09/2014 20:33

I have 4 units from the same manufacturer. The last unit 2007 pink model was a BOGOF offer. I had similar programming issues as everyone else in the beginning.

However the 2002 blue model seems to be breaking down. It is no longer user friendly and seems to be stuck in a verbal loop. Every time I ask it something it has an error message of "It's not fair". I have complained to the manufacturer who tells me this will improve over time and once the unit is around 30 years old it will begin to have more appreciation for it's owner.

stinkingbishop · 30/09/2014 20:40

Yes, soapy, I'm wondering though, given the delivery of my early 1994 model was also something of a surprise, whether I have been guilty of a bit too much Wine -fuelled clicking...

The same thing happened when the Ocado man turned up with 24 sacks of potatoes, rather than the 24 potatoes I thought I'd ordered. Though, unlike the DS/DTDs, Ocado took the potatoes back.

BOFster · 30/09/2014 20:42

I'm told that you can benefit from spontaneous free add-ons once the original models hit that sort of age, Flossy. Apparently they are nowhere near as challenging to operate, and the night wake function is automatically outsourced, so any major malfunctions there rarely cause you problems. The apps can still be expensive, but they are really fun and lack the almost-compulsory quality that was so exhausting with the originals.

FlossyMoo · 30/09/2014 20:52

I have attempted to exchange the 2002 model BOF with my sisters earlier quieter less verbal version. However she noticed and made me swap back.

I do send it for re-programming for 6 hours a day 5 days a week, however although it has recently learned a great deal it is still failing to communicate effectively.

BaffledSomeMore · 30/09/2014 20:53

moxon - Bill Gates managed to sell multiple editions of glitchy software to millions of customers too. :)

FryOneFatManic · 30/09/2014 20:57

My pink 2000 model was delivered 2 weeks early after a malfunction was discovered in my own 1968 model, resulting in removal from the box via a different opening.

As mentioned earlier, this model often needs multiple attempts to switch on in the morning, but on due consideration I feel a bull horn would not be an appropriate option. The hearing aids for my aural devices would blow a gasket.

However, once switched on, this pink 2000 model does have a good homework app installed and rarely malfunctions when this app is running.

My 1961DP model is also proving to be beneficial. It was able to follow basic instructions and prepared a dinner before I arrived home from work. It's never to late to install a new app Grin

BOFster · 30/09/2014 21:04

My 1968DP was actually a reconditioned model, FryOne, with a previous owner. I was pleasantly surprised at the level of pre-programming it came with, although I've heard some people have had to wipe theirs and do a total reset.

Biscuitsneeded · 30/09/2014 21:35

My 2005 model was delivered so late that when i ordered a 2007 model, it didn't occur to me to expect an early delivery. I had asked DP to be on hand for the delivery to help with unpacking and set-up, but unfortunately 2007 model arrived when only I was there, and even the delivery person seemed rather taken aback by the speed with which DS shot out of the delivery van. I also think the manufacturers forgot to install any memory before despatching.

Has anyone got any solutions regarding the third quarter 2003 DD model constantly attempting to unilaterally download social media apps? We understand that Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram invalidate manufacturers warranty - but the screen prompts are constant despite clicking closed.

Fully uninstalling the wifi function seems the only fix - but that causes the shrieking noise the OP mentions in her 2014 model along with strange air emitting noises through the front vent.

GarlicSeptimus · 30/09/2014 22:08

I have a very early 1930s version. They were called DM back then - you young 'uns might recognise it as a DGM. It doesn't suffer the shutdown failures evidenced by recent models, but obviously the battery's wearing down and it generally needs to be recharged twice a day. The housing's severely weathered (they used Bakelite back then!) but, despite numerous dents & scratches, the unit's functional if rather slow by modern standards.

It emits a constant humming noise. I'm told this is due to auditory feedback within the unit, associated with microphone degradation over time, and nothing can be done about it. At least it hums recognisable tunes - I have seen old units that make frequent loud noises for no apparent reason, which must be fiercely annoying! The DM's optical sensors are flaky but it insists on using the Driving Module anyway: I rather fear its Common Sense has degraded, but upgrades were discontinued some time ago so I just have to hope Driving still operates within reasonable parameters. Output's still good considering its age: occasionally rather jumbled and it can get stuck on a loop, but on the whole it's still an entertaining unit and is fantastic at Gardening.

While interacting with my antique, I've tried hacking its Misogyny and Tory programs. I've had limited success with Tory, but absolutely can't shift the Asking For It segment of Misogyny. Has anyone managed to rewrite their older unit's gender politics? I could use a few hints.

For those of you with recent DD/DS units, please do ensure you install Respect For Elders, and keep it up to date. In years to come, you'll be very glad you did Wink

feckitall · 30/09/2014 23:03

MNHQ Are you paying attention!!!!!!! This is a definite for classics!!!

GarlicSeptimus · 30/09/2014 23:34

Grin feck. It definitely is a classic!

And I'm glad I haven't killed the thread

BlotOnTheLandscape · 01/10/2014 07:43

My model DP71 is getting returned to the manufacturer, they failed to install the compassion and consideration modules and instead permanently installed the bastard app - or so it seems today!

Momagain1 · 01/10/2014 08:38

Oh, Blot, definate cause for return, Bastard is the worst sort of virus, recovering the Unit is rare. DP units are optional though, so good riddance. Maybe another someday?

FryOneFatManic · 01/10/2014 08:49

I have discovered this morning that my blue 2004 model actually has an efficiency app installed. He got ready for school without any need for input from my 1961DP model or from me!

I have no idea if this app will continue to work, though.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 01/10/2014 09:01

I have V1 (2.4pink) that is functioning reasonably well most of the time. The input area seems quite fussy as to the fuel that goes in it though.

I wasn't too impressed with V2 (0.7blue) as I thought all glitches and bugs should be removed from newer models. However this one has a very confused charging and standby system at night time. It gets charged and you think it's gone into standby so put it back into the download station, only to find that 10 minutes later it's turned back on and wants more charging.

desperadoe · 01/10/2014 09:46

Relieved as I thought it was my treatment of my two devices that have made them malfunction. Proper maintenance is difficult when instructions from other 'expert' users about the best techniques for satisfactory performance are constantly changing. I have a blue and a pink version, and to make it harder they both have different design faults. There is no satisfactory user manual. Both my devices have the power to cause faults in those trying to control them, causing laughter/tears frequently. It is almost as if they have a mind of their own....

MrsLilac · 01/10/2014 10:54

Hmmm, I have a preorder for a late 2014 model in pink but these malfunctions have got me nervous and suffering from slight buyers remorse. I suspect it is too late to cancel the order or exchange for a canine version...

IfYouAreHappyAndYouKnowIt · 01/10/2014 11:01

I have a 2013 model which has come pre-installed with the Reflux 1.0 add on. We've tried the specialist help function but no luck yet.
However it also has the CuteSmile and BigCuddles apps which are brilliant!

wheresthelight · 01/10/2014 11:06

BOfstr I also have a second user model - the preprogrammed applications were pretty epic!! however the "Night waking" module appears to have a massive malfunction issue as it never seems to reboot in the night when my 2013 pink model boots up at 3am requiring a milk upload.

has anyone found the "mute" control? I was reliably informed that they came pre installed but as yet I have not managed to find it.

and I didn't order my 2013 model either, was always informed my faulty 1980 model was not installed with the required replication application - colour me surprised when Norovirus download turned out to be a replication module

kelper · 01/10/2014 11:16

I am actually crying with laughter at this thread!
My 2008 blue model has recently downloaded cute n stroppy mode, and its a bastard on its battery life!
I've tried returning it to several shops, but none of them are interested, so I might keep it, but I definitely don't want another!
I also have a 1967 version, and that one seems to have downloaded the safe stroppy mode sigh
