DS malfunctioning

soapybubbles123 · 29/09/2014 20:25

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

Anyone discovered a functioning Homework mod?

StuntNun · 30/09/2014 18:59

I don't want to worry people but my 2003, 2006 and 2012 models, all blue, seem to have developed a functional interface that causes them to malfunction according to some apparently predetermined schedule so that one of them requires attention at all times. Are there any known patches for this issue?

Gruntfuttock · 30/09/2014 19:01

Why isn't this in classics yet?

ToothlessFanClub · 30/09/2014 19:04

On my 1998 model, the homework modus only operates smoothly while switching on ipod app and biscuit & tea add-on.
The timer for Shower App seems to be faulty, as it only switches on after 10.30 pm, when I'd expect it to be in Sleep modus.

oldgrandmama · 30/09/2014 19:05

Sorry, OP - but regarding malfunctioning DSs (and DDs), the first 46 years are the worst ...

lettersandcommas · 30/09/2014 19:08

I have an older model.
I now see things haven't changed much.

BaffledSomeMore · 30/09/2014 19:14

Woah. Think I've had a new glitch or possibly feature today and I'd be grateful if anyone else could tell me whether they've seen it on their models.
For 2 periods of over an hour today the two models I have (06 pink and 11 blue) were networked together sharing data successfully. Is this supposed to happen?
Normally when both models connect to the same subnet there's data contention and alarms sound from one or both.
If I can reliably connect them on one subnet it would make life much easier!

BoffinMum · 30/09/2014 19:23

It has taken me many years to upload the HomeworkApp for the 1998 and 2001 models but the program now runs relatively smoothly.

AppleAndMelon · 30/09/2014 19:30

It's a known fault - an upgrade won't fix anything unfortunately. We got our first thirteen years ago (01 blue) and it has developed a low sounding groan type of noise intermittently. We have found plugging in near a tablet or iPod screen seems to reduce the noise temporarily. It's eating electricity though.

I've heard they are pretty bulky to get back in the packaging they came in.

AppleAndMelon · 30/09/2014 19:32

PS: (03 blue and 06 blue) models also glitchy.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 30/09/2014 19:35

I currently have a pink 1999 unit next to me being nosy, it doesnt even belong to me.

ToriaPumpkin · 30/09/2014 19:36

My 2014Pink has been a nightmare today. No form of charge or boot has taken, all ports have secreted vast amounts of substances I don't even want to discuss and there has been a high pitched wail emitting from it at all times. It's possible it's down to the installation of TEETH 1.0 but I suspect it's just a massive GRUMP programme.

Fortunately my 2011Blue has been fully recharged by a day at MIL's house and has settled into the overnight charging port well.

wheresthelight · 30/09/2014 19:42

I have an August 2013 dd model and it has been malfunctioning all week, I believe that TEETH 101 is in the process of installing and causing a glitch. Calpol 1.0 and Nurofen 1.1 seem to be assisting with the shut down programme but we are still getting the intermittent GRUMP bug

moxon · 30/09/2014 19:44

Question: why do we insist on ordering more than one model, when clearly the basic evolutionary hardware is so flawed, and the software programmes never function properly? Is this one of those opt-in/opt-out schemes you're never told about?

JerseySpud · 30/09/2014 19:49

I have the 1981 blue model a well.

This model seems to need permanent recharging and refueling and the app for doing housework appears to be non functioning.

soapybubbles123 · 30/09/2014 19:54

0.6 model has just run the CalPol app and is now successfully charging Grin

Which is just as well bad my shift worker has threatened to go on strike if we have a repeat of last night's malfunctioning.

My 1997Blue has been loaned to a relation for the past few weeks and she reported no glitches at all, running smoothly except for the occasional manual WASHUP prompt needed.

However on reinstalling the model back home, most programmes seem to be malfunctioning, including WAKEUP and STUDY 2.1.
Perhaps a complete reboot is required, I'm thinking about disconnecting not just the wifi but all power and nutritional sources.

Shockers · 30/09/2014 19:55

I sent my 1997 model to France for 2 years to upgrade its language and productivity functions. The result it quite pleasing, although it appears to have connected itself to another device during that time. Some of the existing functions of the newer device appear to have wiped the malfunctioning memory of the existing unit resulting in greater all round efficiency.

I kept two newer models here to take on holiday and days out. They're in funky pink and blue colourways and are very entertaining. The pink is a 1998 model, and the blue is a 2000. We have had a few glitches over the years trying to upload data to the pink model, but changing the docking area seemed to solve that particular problem.

All in all, I recommend both models, but find the blues more energy thirsty, so keep a good supply in because they're a nightmare if their power supply dips.

notoneforselfies · 30/09/2014 19:56

My 2014 model is powerfully magnetised to other electrical appliances. Hoover cords, remote controls, phones etc. It's an unfortunate malfunction that I believe can cause either one of the units to cease working. Confused
Also it won't ever recharge in the recharging unit until I have poked a breast into it's user interface. Go figure.

soapybubbles123 · 30/09/2014 20:00

notone My unit is also powerfully attracted to other, smaller technologies, chargers in particular.

It seems intent on gnawing on them, I have been informed that this is probably a glitch caused by the Teeth1.0 add-on being imminently installed.

I was told in the hospital that they had a 28 day return policy. I returned it at 10 days (developed a severe colour glitch so it would only display in yellow) and they refused to take it back.

I feel aggrieved 5.5 years later that not only would they not follow their returns policy (it was a slightly used model I suppose), but that my statutory rights to return faulty products was not adhered to.

The next model developed a similar colour glitch after 2 years where it would turn very blue intermittently in cool weather. Again the hospital refused to refund or exchange stating that unless the glitch continued or any other malfunctions appeared that I just needed to continue to operate the device. I thought these things had to work to at least -5 seasonally.

oenophilia · 30/09/2014 20:06

So glad to see that these issues are, in fact, pretty common. my original model, a 1998 blue, was delivered waaay before completion before full functionality had been installed, so a reset to factory settings is not really an option. There were quite a few hiccups getting it to function but now does pretty much all that's expected of it, except for some external comms issues that sometimes need a translation pack. It struggled with the GCSE interface despite being set to maximum effort but is now hooked up to a new educational upgrade facility that may be more effective. The 2000 blue version has a faulty volume control and has recharging schedules that are incompatible with external logistical requirements. It's online networking capabilities seem highly advanced, though. The 2004 pink addition came with a cunning marketing ploy - a BOGOF that wasn't advised at the point of ordering. This has proved expensive, particularly in terms of portability. Production also seems to have been inconsistent in that particular batch, with one especially sensitive to casing choices. The TEEN upgrade on these last two installations appears to have been delivered ahead of the planned schedule. I'm hoping that the next stage upgrade will include improved co-operation and consideration, but suspect I may have to wait a little longer.

BOFster · 30/09/2014 20:09

Mine is a much older 1996 model, which has surprised me by becoming more or less self-functioning, although it does have an in-app purchasing facility set up to sync with multiple accounts from other family members. I have been surprised by two random alerts this week, but I have yet to see how effective the homing signal will prove. I am told this will kick in around Christmas, and that my device may need some serious topping-up.

stinkingbishop · 30/09/2014 20:11

At least all of you actually ORDERED your models. I had a completely unsolicited delivery of the 2012 model. And as it was on a special BOGOF offer at the time, there are two of them cluttering up the place.

In fairness, they are rather decorative, but I am getting slightly spooked that the units now seem to be communicating and strategising with each other, like some scifi horror movie. I caught them helping each other to un-dock today during their midday recharge.

A helpful new feature I've discovered is you can set them to report on the other's malfunctions. This they do with great efficiency and at the unit's maximum volume, especially when the malfunction involves discharge.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 30/09/2014 20:15

I have a pink 2009 model and a blue 2011. The earlier version had initial trouble connecting properly to the power source causing a lot of noise and static. The 2011 model seemed to have these glitches ironed out by using a larger casing and a wider and stronger power port. Both still make random squeaking noises intermittently at night. I am surprised people are still buying them really but I guess they enjoy the repeated nighttime ordering system.
