to think that I might still be able to find a small monkey toy to replace the one my ds lost 3 three years ago?

DS loves monkeys and has collected them since he was tiny. This one was his favourite- it used to be mine, and was over 20 years old so they don’t sell them any more. He somehow took it into town with him and lost it well over three years ago now. He’s now 6. But at regular intervals since then he has cried again about losing it. The latest time was this week. I have scoured the internet, ebay and car boot sales but have never been able to find one. I tried contacting the shop it was bought from but that hit a deadend too. I think it was a ‘russ’ something. The actual monkey was about the size of a toddler’s hand- it was tiny, probably only about 4 inches long and it was filled with tiny beans.

I know I need to let it go, and I know its one of life’s lessons, but I would so love to track one down for him. If anyone has any bright ideas or has one of these monkleys (I would pay obviously!!), please let me know

I wonder if crying for monkey is partly just a good excuse to have a cry because he is tired or annoyed about something but he doesn't want to be seen a softy.

ChristopherRobin · 18/05/2014 08:45

If he has no tail then he is technically a chimp/gorilla and not actually a monkey. It probably doesn't make any difference in the world of soft toys but worth trying a different search term! I've had a quick look but couldn't find him.

lovessummer · 18/05/2014 19:12

sistermerror- thanks for the extra pictures. I sooo wanted it to be the right one. That would have been the best end to the story ever!! But it's not, no matter how much I wish it! Sad Thanks so much for trying
dozie- occasionally perhaps, but he often talks about him and how much he wants him back even if he's not sad, just in general conversation. We went to a car boot sale today and he looked in all the soft toy boxes in case they had one (he has no idea I am doing this on mumsnet- I try not to make any reference to the original one)
christopher- will include that in my searches too! (he may have had a tail, but I am fairly confident he didn't)
Thanks all again for trying- it's really heartwarming.

Hi there...adding my monkey sleuthing ideas to the mix... Could it be a beanie baby?

Tons on ebay. Did search for beanie baby monkey. They're 20 years old. One there was happy meal toy if you scroll down. Must be small enough?

From your descriptions he sounds very similar to a little monkey my DS got from Monkey Forest at Trentham gardens. Could it be worth giving them a call, I'm sure they had loads of different cuddly monkeys you could buy, perhaps one they stock is the right one?

mumteedum · 18/05/2014 22:41

Picture for you. Hope it might be.

Oh boo.. See you already discounted beanie babies. Sorry :(

Last try before I give up! Hope you find one.

This is the longest of long shots, but this is the little reindeer I mentioned. Does it look a similar style/size/material? I remember them having lots of animals in the same range, and I have a photo now of the label, in case that gives any leads to tracking down the same line!

I think I may have found your monkey! The only problem is that since he was last with you three years ago he has spent a lot of time in the North Pole helping Father Christmas. He now insists on wearing a Christmas hat. I think I might be able to remove it but he seems quite attached to it so I'm not 100% sure. I'm happy to try, or your son might be excited to receive him along with a letter explaining where he has been and what he has been doing in the North Pole since he's been gone?

Let me know if you think he is the right monkey (albeit a new Christmasy version) and I'm sure he'd be thrilled to go and live with you again! :)

Ahhh jinkle well done Smile

AMillionNameChangesLater · 19/05/2014 18:13

How lovely Jinkle

EduCated · 19/05/2014 18:24

Oh my goodness, is that really him?

BridgeOfWhys · 19/05/2014 18:38

That is definitely him.

jinkle · 19/05/2014 18:45

I hope it is him. I used to collect monkeys in the 1990s (have lots of the other ones posted in this thread too!) and he's a Russ so I think there's a good chance he's right.

nostress · 19/05/2014 18:48

Fingers crossed!

Retropear · 19/05/2014 19:02

Pretty sure that is him(the red mouth is the clincher),my dsis is working silly hours at the moment so may not see. Will ring and leave a message to let her know. She'll be thrilled.

The Christmassy letter sounds fab, grandma is a great seamstress so could easily detach said hat if needs be after arrival.

I once bought and sent somebody on here a blue kangaroo out of stock everywhere else.It must be karma!

Thank you so much!Thanks

lovessummer · 19/05/2014 20:02

It's him!!!!!!!! Jinkle I love you! (I love everyone else too- you have all been so kind, its been so heartwarming).
I can't believe it. (Was just sitting down to do some work and thought I would have one quick check before I started to see if there were any updates- with no real hope of there being any news. Abandoning work now- too excited!).
Yes love the idea of a letter with him saying what he's been up to over the last three years (as wouldn't want to risk unpicking the hat in case it leaves holes). I'll PM you Jinkle. Thank you sooooo much.
I really am staggered by everyone's kindness and help. Seriously.
I'd better go now- feeling very emotional!
