40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

muliply then add. so x 0 = 0 +1 = 1

I think it's 41. The multiplication needs to be done first.

I don't see how either can be right as there are no brackets, so it is unclear whether you are adding 40 + 40 (ie 80) and then multiplying that by 0, ie giving you 0 + 1, or whether you are multiplying 40 by 0, to give 0, adding that to the first 40 and then adding 1.

I would have said 1 as well. Have seen things like this and don't know what BODMAS is. Clearly my school was lacking in mathematics teaching!

Ds says that's a nasty question as it depends on the format. Some people use PEMDAS, which is parenthesis, exponents, multiply, divide, add. Or, there's BIDMAS, which is brackets, indices, divide, multiply, add.

(I've no idea what he's talking about) I'd say it was 1.
